I think my Uber driver is following me

Please bear with me. I know this sounds ridiculous, however, I got an Uber home at around 3am in the morning last Saturday.

To be totally honest, I don't really remember too much about the journey home (I was a bit worse for wear after a friends birthday party.) I left my phone in the taxi and the driver returned it to me the next day. I hadn't contacted Uber, he just turned up at about 10am. I was super grateful as I had no idea where I'd left it.

I then saw him again outside my flat (I live in the middle of a major city so this isn't unusual in itself) and he was looking up at my window. The same thing happened the next day. I wfh and my desk is by the window hence me noticing.

I brushed both of these incidents off as a coincidence, however, he's just turned up at my flat door tonight (9pm) asking if I have booked an Uber. I haven't. He's now sitting in his car outside and I'm not sure if I'm overreacting.

I hope you're ok Op & that you reported it and it was taken seriously.

WeeHaggisFace · 13/08/2022 14:20

How scary. Hope you're OK OP and got somewhere with the police

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 13/08/2022 14:31

Also report to your district council - they are responsible for licensing and Ubers still need to be licenced as private hires.

ChristinaXYZ · 13/08/2022 14:52

Hope you're ok OP. I would report to everyone you can think of - police, Uber, local council, local councillor... (a good independent local councillor might gee up the police if they don't appear too interested). Send the photos to friends /relatives and as other have said set up an alert system with them.

Also get a camera installed with a view of the street and your door. Order something cheap from amazon or somewhere if you're not sure what your doing and set up the best you can. Get a better system when you have someone you trust who can set something decent up for you.

Keep your phone changed (get a back up charger) in case of power cuts and if you only have modern landline phones that are mobile get a cheap handset that plugs in and does not require the power on to work.

Until you are sure he has buggered off keep changing your routes and routines as much as you and try and keep food stocked up so if you see him outside you're not forced to go out.

And get your phone checked out by a professional.

It may well be something and nothing but it is creepy behaviour that may escalate, if not with you then with someone else. This is horrible for you OP but better safe than sorry.

Ballcactus · 13/08/2022 15:16

Report to 101, Uber and suzylampugh trust have good advice too

Mackes · 13/08/2022 15:19

Thanks for the nice messages everyone. I was fine last night. Got through on the phone and they weren't very helpful to be honest. But I guess there's not a huge amount they can do? They told me to keep a log of each time I've seen him with dates/ times etc and obviously call 999 if he actually tries anything. 😩

I spoke with the neighbours too and they are going to keep an eye out.

That’s all sensible op and take care when coming home alone at night. Avoid if possible or text neighbour x

Audioslaw · 13/08/2022 15:25

Go back into your Uber app and take a screenshot of the journey you did with him including the reg and email it to yourself incase anything happens to your phone.

Did the police take a stalking report? If so someone will probably be in touch within a week or so to come and see you to take a statement should you wish to have him spoken to

RhubarbFairy · 13/08/2022 15:56

Thanks for updating. I've been thinking of you too.

Brilliant advice!

OP so glad you checked in here and had a peaceful night!

BlueReindeer · 13/08/2022 19:06

Well done for letting your neighbours know, ther is nothing you need to keep secret from anyone. Let someone in your family or friends know too and let them know his name/Uber details and registration in case anything happens. I would hope the police would get in touch today or call your local station and ask for more advice, they should do more.

I live in North Vancouver, and it's not available here. I don't know about Vancouver but every time it's been mentioned, there has been trouble because of the taxi services here which are like the mafia 😳

Zonder · 14/08/2022 05:19

Hope the man has seen sense and doesn't come back.

Hi there, I'm just across town from you and both Uber and Lyft have been operating for a couple of years. Uber, according to their site, is available & is advertising for drivers in NVan and part of WVan (25thSt). So now you have another option to taxis 🙂

Sorry to sidetrack, OP. Hope he stays away.

figmaofmyimagination · 14/08/2022 07:33

Hope you feel ok this morning OP, and that Uber get in touch with you.

Pegasushaswings · 14/08/2022 08:22

Not to worry you further, but how drunk were you? Where was your phone when you were in the Uber? In your bag or your hand? are you confident you did genuinely leave it in the car or do you think he may have taken it out of your bag/ hand? Get that phone checked, I’m useless at tech phone stuff but check he hasn’t managed to do anything to it or track you on there (yes I know he obviously knows where you live)
as I say, I’m sorry to worry you but this stood out to me on your OP.

@Pegasushaswings this freaked me out but you are 100% right, it’s so easy to do that and he had her phone overnight. The OP doesn’t remember much from the trip home.

It is and could be an excuse to come back to your flat. If you take it into a phone shop I’m sure one of the staff in there can help you.

Iflyaway · 14/08/2022 18:19

The police will do something about it.

Really??
,
Sarah Everard? And all the others...?!

But what else have we got. Yea OP. Take a photo, let the police know.

He may be on record.

🙄 do you think every police officer is going to be a killer, fucking hell- the thousands upon thousands of officers who do the job and would be concerned for the OP yet you reference the tiny minority (and yes it should be 0 amount of cops like that but unfortunately that's not reality because evil people live amongst normal ones in every profession).

Isaidnoalready · 15/08/2022 08:19

Except they didn't seem interested when she called so zero fucks given as per usual "call 999 if he does something" is a pathetic response and it's one abused women are told time after time it wasn't enough that my ex threatened to kill me repeatedly he had to actually try before they would consider doing anything about it no advice about cameras or locks etc my housing company was more use they said if he caused trouble near or towards the house again they would get a court order keeping him away from the property and get me cameras installed

Thatiswild · 20/08/2022 22:05

Hi OP I hope you’re ok, I just wondered if you are ok as I keep thinking about this thread as it unnerved me, I hope nothing has come of it and that you are ok.
