I think my Uber driver is following me

Please bear with me. I know this sounds ridiculous, however, I got an Uber home at around 3am in the morning last Saturday.

To be totally honest, I don't really remember too much about the journey home (I was a bit worse for wear after a friends birthday party.) I left my phone in the taxi and the driver returned it to me the next day. I hadn't contacted Uber, he just turned up at about 10am. I was super grateful as I had no idea where I'd left it.

I then saw him again outside my flat (I live in the middle of a major city so this isn't unusual in itself) and he was looking up at my window. The same thing happened the next day. I wfh and my desk is by the window hence me noticing.

I brushed both of these incidents off as a coincidence, however, he's just turned up at my flat door tonight (9pm) asking if I have booked an Uber. I haven't. He's now sitting in his car outside and I'm not sure if I'm overreacting.

This is scary! Do you have a Camera or any way to know if he's been there when you're out? Is his photograph on Uber? I'd tell the neighbours and ask if they've seen him around. Stay safe OP 🌻

Glad you are reporting this to police and Uber.

Trixiefirecracker · 12/08/2022 22:37

@rodeobob why an earth would you surmise that?

Iflyaway · 12/08/2022 22:38

This is why I don't do Uber, unless with others.

Registered taxi driver all the way for me. My safety is worth the extra price of the fare.

waterproofed · 12/08/2022 22:38

Just to say, bearing in mind you do not remember what happened to your phone I’d bet he took it on purpose to then engineer a plausible reason he could return it AND make you feel grateful for the ‘favour’.

I know people are probably thinking I’m cynical, but a very similar scenario happened to me once on holiday. A random bloke I was chatting to on the beach turned up at my holiday villa to ‘return’ a flip flop we apparently left at the beach… only we combed the beach before leaving looking for the missing shoe and it was nowhere to be seen. He must have taken it while we were chatting but I have no idea how he knew where we were staying. I was very freaked out and super grateful it happened the day before we left.

I swear these fuckers all follow a script and the longer I live the more cautious I become. I’m glad you’re reporting this.

This is what comes up when I try to report to Uber. I don't think any of these are appropriate?

His actions are discomforting for a start

Iflyaway · 12/08/2022 22:39

In fact, I know someone who IS a taxi driver and he totally got it that I don't do Uber.....

EmmaH2022 · 12/08/2022 22:40

OP
Please report to police

Also, please check your things from that night, could he have put an airtag in your bag or pocket?

wibblewobblewooo · 12/08/2022 22:41

Elsanore · 12/08/2022 22:09

Check inside the phone case or cover for an AirTag, tile or other horrible little tracking thing.

I was thinking check for air tags. In your bag and clothes you were wearing too.

InquiringMinds · 12/08/2022 22:45

@Mackes I forgot to say what you just mentioned to me. Photos showing him outside your home are great evidence and please don’t answer your door to him again. Have you got a ring doorbell? Really worried about you. The fact that he is sitting out there is not on! Also be aware if he returns in another car. I have never recovered from my assault (mentally to an extent) but not physically. Here for you, tag me anytime. I will be back online tomorrow morning again. Last thought for tonight, was your phone locked when he brought it back? I don’t trust this guy at all.

Helpyou · 12/08/2022 22:46

I hope the police took it seriously. This is not okay and he'll absolutely know you didn't order an uber. I hope you're okay. We can chat to you here if you feel you need it.

@Mackes either someone is the target of surveillance in your block and the driver is undercove r, or yes that's unusual behaviour.

I know Uber are fairly popular/well used, but I've never taken one.

Where I worked, one of their CEOs would stay over on a weekly basis. He would never get an Uber into the office, and always ask us to book him a cab. Fucking weird. Weird enough for me to know I didn't want to use the service.

SummerWhisper · 12/08/2022 22:51

Unsolicited contact after the trip fits his behaviour

What about

-Actions that were discomfiting
-Unsolicited contact after the trip.

?

I'd personally give him the benefit of the doubt one more time.... if you see him again, report him.

Trixiefirecracker · 12/08/2022 22:52

@rodeobob I find that completely a unacceptable and racist comment and aside from that, complete bollocks. Where on earth do you get those statistics from? Forget that. I don’t actually want to engage with you anymore.

Mangofandangoo · 12/08/2022 22:52

Please OP report this immediately. The police will do something about it. Don't brush it off.

Benjispruce4 · 12/08/2022 22:52

@Trixiefirecracker reported

Mackes · 12/08/2022 21:27

I have a password on my phone, but I didn't even think of this to be honest.

@Mackes
That wouldn’t have occurred to me, either.
Can you take phone to apple store or similar to see if they can see if a tracking app has been installed?

This does sound creepy.
Mention to Uber and Police as well.

SunnySwirl · 12/08/2022 22:53

Worried about you OP. His behaviour is creepy and the direct approach at your door tonight is actually quite scary. Is there anyone else you can stay with tonight? I don’t trust what he’s done to your phone either. Is there a tech shop you can do to and check it tomorrow?

Mangofandangoo · 12/08/2022 22:53

@rodeobob you should be ashamed of that comment Hmm

CuriousMama · 12/08/2022 22:55

How scary. Some great advice on here. Definitely tell a friend too.
