To ask if and when you take off your wedding/engagement rings?

This is not an exciting post. 😂

I was engaged for a year and took my engagement ring off whenever I was home. Only put it on when I was leaving the house.

I’ve been married a few weeks and have been doing the same with my wedding ring. I’ve noticed that DH never takes his off, though. I’m contemplating doing the same, but I’m wondering if it’s a ‘thing’.

What do you do? Leave them on all the time? Take them off for cooking? Showers? When you wash your hands?

I never have them on unless we’re going somewhere nice! I can go weeks without wearing them! Hubby has never taken his ring off since the day I put it there whereas I couldn’t wait to take them off two days after the wedding.

My fingers swell, I have very bad eczema and I spend a lot of time outdoors in the countryside so it’s just not worth the pain and irritation unfortunately! Hubby doesn’t mind and neither do I, I never take them on holiday either, they’re just sat on my bedside cabinet or in a jewellery box!

Mumofgrownupkids · 07/08/2022 23:16

Had to have my wedding ring cut off when pregnant with DS1. Not worn it since. DH took his off after a motorcycle smash before his hand swelled up. Not worn it since... Now married 40 years and see no need for rings.

AngeloMysterioso · 07/08/2022 23:17

I take mine off all the time, and the two rings I wear on my right hand. For a few reasons- water gets trapped under and between them when I wash my hands (which, having a baby and a toddler, I do a lot) and my skin gets sore… also when I’m gardening I don’t want dirt, compost etc getting stuck in them… I haven’t worn them today at all. I also have a silver stand-in ring that I made myself which I wear when I’m going to festivals, the beach etc and don’t want to risk losing them. DH never takes his off but his is just one smooth band.

Rosebel · 07/08/2022 23:18

I rarely wear my wedding ring but I wear my engagement ring all the time. No idea why.
DH rarely wears his wedding ring either as he does a lot of physical /outside work and worries about loosing it.

RewildingAmbridge · 07/08/2022 23:18

I worked in a jeweller's when I was younger so I take mine off before I shower and don't put them back on until after I am completely ready, including perfume. They stay cleaner that way, also take them off for swimming and if I'm doing anything heavy in the garden (pruning, watering etc fine heavy digging/turf laying take them off)

MadCattery · 07/08/2022 23:19

When kneading bread dough or doing something truly dirty, or just soapy. If I have to reach into a bucket of soapy water to wash a car, the ring stays inside the house. That’s about the only times I remove it.

bluesky45 · 07/08/2022 23:20

I never take mine off. DH takes his off for work and wears on a chain around his neck. He also takes off to play a contact sport. Always puts them back on after his shower though. Luckily his is quite cheap and could be replaced because he keeps it in his wallet in the changing rooms. Mine is a family heirloom (was my great grandmothers wedding ring) and is very faintly engraved on the inside from over 100 years ago. So is irreplaceable if I lost it. It is never removed.

HappyPie82 · 07/08/2022 23:21

I take mine off every night and if I’m doing something messy in the kitchen. And then at the gym.
I have a halo style and I’m scared if catching it on things.
I have a lion latch for the gym, it’s a little ring box that attaches to you keys.

sunflowerdaisyrose · 07/08/2022 23:23

For climbing and for making something like burgers which means putting my hands in raw meat.

Tillsforthrills · 07/08/2022 23:28

I can’t stand it when I see people cooking with their rings on.

Always take off for showers, swimming and cooking.

Cherchezlaspice · 07/08/2022 23:30

So, it sounds like there’s a few people who do what I do; a lot of people who wear them most of the time, but take them off for messy work; quite a few who never take them off at all and a handful who never wear them.

Hmm. I think I might continue as I am. At least, I’ll always know where they are - in my jewellery box or on my finger. If I took them off multiple times a day, I would definitely lose them. And my engagement ring is a bulky raised stone, I think it would get quite irritating if I wore it all the time.

I keep my wedding ring on all the time, the only time I took it off was in my first pregnancy when my fingers swelled.

I used to take my engagement ring off quite a lot, but unfortunately it's too small for me now and I can't get it on. I keep remembering that I must get it resized.

80sMum · 07/08/2022 23:36

I took my engagement ring off on my wedding day and haven't worn it since. I wore the wedding ring all the time for about 30 years, but then it started to get very tight in hot weather and my fingers were swelling, so I took it off and put it away. I haven't worn it for years. I'm not sure I even know where it is any more!

PurpleFlower1983 · 07/08/2022 23:38

I never take mine off, I think DH does when he showers.

DinosaursEatMan · 07/08/2022 23:38

Mine don’t fit any more, I have a cheapish stand-in ring that I occasionally wear, but most of the time I don’t bother. DH probably wears his once a year max.

Erictheavocado · 07/08/2022 23:38

I never used to take off my rings, but then I developed arthritis in my hands and one day found I could not get them off. I ended up having to have them cut off and then made a bit bigger. Nowadays I take them off indoors every night. I never want to have to have them cut off again - I was heartbroken at the time.

GingerFigs · 07/08/2022 23:45

For the people who take them off...(I'm going to sound really daft here!) were you not superstitious about taking them off after your DH had put them on your finger the day you got married? I always thought that your husband put the ring on your finger during the vows and then ....that was it. I think I'd feel like if I took it off then the vows were, I don't know, null? See, I said I'd sound daft!!

Lilbunnyfufu · 07/08/2022 23:54

I hate wearing rings so I only wear my wedding ring when I leave the house. I don't wear my engagement ring anymore cause my fingers got fatter.

This honestly never even occurred to me. I’m not wearing it, currently. Still very much married. 😁

Never take any of my rings off unless it is to change to a different ring

MrsToothyBitch · 08/08/2022 00:22

I take my engagement ring off for exercise classes or swimming and any hands on cooking like mucking about with dough, making crumble crumbs, forming fish cakes, handling chicken etc. I try and remember to remove my ring for showers or baths but I don't always remember! I hate forgetting to put it back on and going out without it though. I lost it in a jacuzzi on a spa break last month- forgot to take it off. Luckily it sank to the bottom so we found it easily- but I'm trying to be much more careful now!!!

SparrowsNest · 08/08/2022 00:42

I do not take my wedding ring off - simple gold band so easy to wear. My engagement ring previously belonged to a dear great aunty and I only wear it for special occasions now.

Linnet · 08/08/2022 00:45

I never take my wedding ring off, unless I’m making meatloaf or turkey burgers, or meatballs. I don’t wear my engagement ring as it’s yellow gold and my wedding ring is silver and titanium so they don’t go together.

BeaLola · 08/08/2022 00:48

I take my engagement ring off for swimming, gardening, diy . If I go abroad on holiday I leave it at home as I would tend to swim a lot whilst away.

I don't wear my wedding ring if painting (walls etc).

I take both rings off momentarily to scrub hands, apply handcream,

mrsmacmc · 08/08/2022 01:02

Wedding band stays on my finger all the time apart from when I'm showering or doing messy cooking / baking. Engagement ring goes on along with my other ring on right hand if I'm going out the house. DH has his wedding band on all the time too.
