The idiot has put ‘the lionesses have only gone and done it and Kelly is England’s heroine bra none’. Why did he feel the need for a sexist quip about the goal celebration? So embarrassing.

Really? If women would stop being such miserable nags, there’d be no sexism?

Can you really not see your own internalised misogyny here? Women who notice subtle sexism and talk about it are not missing a sense of humour. They’re not causing sexism. They’re not letting other women down.

Stop belittling women and their right to talk about perceived sexism!

I am not going to converse any further with you.

Margot78 · 01/08/2022 00:09

It’s casual sexism from someone who is supposed to be a respected player and pundit. He should have just taken the opportunity to say well done and not made it all about her underwear. Do we really have to keep dismissing this stuff?

I don't know if you're a football fan @Margot78, but during the years when people sneered at women's football, it was common for idiots to say 'Are they going to rip their shirts off when they score, haha?' as if that would be utterly unthinkable for a woman because women are supposed to be demure and cover up. Chloe Kelly was deliberately subverting that - when she took her shirt off it was a massive 'fuck you' to sexism and misogyny because she was doing what any other footballer would do instead of thinking she couldn't do it because she was a woman. Sexist dickheads think women can only take their tops off to be sexually alluring, and Chloe Kelly was proving that we can take our tops off to celebrate a brilliant fucking goal and not give a shit what people think of our tits.

So it absolutely SHOULD be commented on - it was a really big moment for women's football because she did something that, for decades, has been part of a sexist myth that women's football isn't 'proper football'. It was sticking two fingers up at the idea women behave more decorously on the pitch than men. Lineker knows that, and that is what he is commenting on. It's not a 'haha, we saw boobs' joke at all. It's the opposite of that.

LoveInNashville · 01/08/2022 10:32

I think he’s deleted the tweet.

I am not going to converse any further with you.

I’m not surprised. Your use of the old “you’ve got no sense of humour”, “women like you are why there’s sexism” comments have been exhausted.

I found GL's tweet hilarious.
Dunno if he's twat or not (tend to think not, actually), but it was a perfect pun.

Come on. She chose to recklessly, deliriously get yellow card for that stunt. Tsk Tsk. It was a notable moment in the match, though (bit like Earp on desk at press conference, and Scott's "F'ing Bitch!" shout). At least GL found great humour in a moment we all wanted to indulge Kelly for.

The only commentary (tweet) on Lionesses I have found truly repulsive was a white supremecist one that wandered into my feed. Any men commenting on women footie being different from men's game is otherwise part of a process in my eyes.

Can't find the tweet now that had drawn mustaches on Lionesses asking if they could all play for men's side now. I wonder who is going to howl protest at that one.

Sliggt derail but Scott was shouting 'fucking prick' wasn't she? That's what it looked like.

theDudesmummy · 01/08/2022 10:34

@10hailmarys that is a brilliant post, thank you.

@10hailmarys that is a brilliant post, thank you.

It certainly is brilliant. Also how sexist of Lineker to also have retweeted a brilliant female's post, knocking men's football. Fair play to him.

Yeah, it was “Fuck off, you fucking prick”

EhatBow · 01/08/2022 10:45

I'm sure it's pure coincidence that the action resulted in the Nike logo featuring prominently on every front page and all over SM 😆

TeapotTitties · 01/08/2022 10:47

theDudesmummy · 01/08/2022 09:32

But he said "the gays and the girls", so if lesbians are what he is referring to, then they are not girls?

Oh come on, stop splitting hairs.

You KNOW he's celebrating the fact some of the women are gay 'as well' as being women.

gatehouseoffleet · 01/08/2022 10:50

EhatBow · 01/08/2022 10:15

I wouldn't be surprised if Nike paid her to do it.

Quite possible. Are they official sponsors? If not, it's a great ambush marketing ploy! But even if not it hasn't done them any harm (sadly, as they very publicly support male-bodied people in female sport - I am not friend of Nike).

Floisme · 01/08/2022 10:51

Clymene · 01/08/2022 10:10

Well that just shows how much you know about women's football. It was a homage to Brandi Chastain who has been immortalised in a statue for doing the same when she scored the winning goal at the US/China final.

And they were totally in control of the ball after that.

Well thank you. It's true that I'm more familiar with men's football but I know enough to understand that removing your shirt in celebration is a straight bookable offence, and that getting booked takes the edge off your game because from then on you know that one mistimed tackle means you're off the pitch, plus that your opponents know this too so you're in danger of becoming a target, and that your already exhausted team mates have to work even harder to cover for you.

As for citing Brandi Chastain, well that kind of illustrates my point - not just reckless but egotistical. I will concede that you do need a bit of an ego to be an athlete but, in a team game, you have to learn to keep it in check, no?

Clymene · 01/08/2022 10:51

His tweet led to some vile responses from other men so I'm not surprised he deleted it.

Jesus Christ!!! I'm embarrassed for you!

Po faced mumsnet looking to make something bad out of everything!!

Surplus2requirements · 01/08/2022 10:57

What Kelly did was an act of celebration and rebellion, a fuck you to the get the ironing done brigade, a powerful moment.

Linekers word play pun is actually supportive of that...the best bar/bra none.

To reduce that to a (quoting the OP) "tit joke" is, imo, objectifying and sexualising Kelly's act.

If there's internalised misogyny I'd suggest its there.

PearlclutchersInc · 01/08/2022 10:58

Oh for Pete's sake; give me my pearls back and go and have another gin. 🙄

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 01/08/2022 11:02

Christ it's like a Sun headline isn't it?

Agree that for such a humongous event it would have been way classier to stick to the ladies achievements. Class however isn't a thing I'd ever associate with Linekar though.

Well done Lionesses - I'm so bloody proud 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Aside from the unnecessary shit joke, I am still unclear why all the Gary hate? Please tell me?

I met him at a corporate awards thing. He was compare and I was a winner (!) I was one of the only women in the room and he was sleazy as hell. Just seemed to think it was obvious I'd fall at this feet.

Also, just so you know it's not one way traffic - many years ago during his playing days, Lineker shit himself on the pitch. He was unwell with a diarrhoea bug and couldn't make it off the pitch.

If you're not a football fan, you won't be aware that Lineker is one of our greatest male strikers of all time. His record is exceptional - he's the 4th highest English male striker of all time. But do you know what people regularly mention to him? Yep, that's right. The time he did a poo on the pitch. And he takes it in good spirits, and has even joked about it himself. Shit happens (see - pun??!).

There was a dog that got loose on a football pitch during a match once, and the dog did a poo on the pitch. Lineker tweeted the video clip of the dog having a poo along with the caption "always good to see clips of my playing days". Humour.

Today was a momentous occasion for women's sports in this country. Doesn't mean we can't have a joke about things too.

That's interesting, I didn't know that about him

SallyWD · 01/08/2022 11:10

I'm not a fan of Gary Lineker (I met him and thought he was rather unpleasant) but I can't feel offended about this. She ran around in her bra, he's referencing that. So what? People make fun of mke footballer's appearances all the time. And Linford Christie was always called "The Lunchbox" when I was growing up (because of his very large trouser bulge). I don't remember anyone complaining about sexism then.

SallyWD · 01/08/2022 11:14

I meant to say people make fun of MALE footballer's appearances all the time.

SallyWD · 01/08/2022 11:14

They probably shouldn't. Two wrongs don't make a right.

Clymene · 01/08/2022 11:23

Yeah, 5 minutes from the end of second half of extra time is not something I'd worry about @Floisme

I'd forgotten about Lineker's shit @SpidersAreShitheads! He did get the piss ripped out of him mercilessly

Maverickess · 01/08/2022 11:25

DarkDarkNight · 01/08/2022 00:54

It would be casual sexism if she hadn’t taken her top off exposing her bra. As she ran around in a sports bra it was perfectly acceptable tweet.

This.

There was nothing inappropriate about her doing so (apart from the rules of the game and she was yellow carded for it in line with those rules as should happen to any player) and there's nothing inappropriate about referencing it because it happened.

I mean it's a bit of a groan joke but I don't find it sexist, a bra is a piece of clothing, no more or no less.

Maverickess · 01/08/2022 11:28

And I really hope this doesn't overshadow the amazing achievement of those women yesterday and of all those who have supported this happening in various ways - women, girls, boys and men.
