To think Lineker should apologise for his tweet

The idiot has put ‘the lionesses have only gone and done it and Kelly is England’s heroine bra none’. Why did he feel the need for a sexist quip about the goal celebration? So embarrassing.

I think you should apologize for starting this post.

😆

@Ontomatopea so you're wading in on a conversation about how supportive the bra was without actually reading the related comments Confused

theDudesmummy · 01/08/2022 09:06

I don't see how it is sexist. She was showing her bra, hardly an unusual item, but not usually on show in public, so a rather eye-catching moment, which she would have well known when she did it. GL made a pun about it. If a male player had run around with his underwear and someone had made a pun about pants would that cause offence?

Margot78 · 01/08/2022 09:07

PugInTheHouse · 01/08/2022 08:44

And this is one of the reasons why sexism isn't always taken seriously as you always get those people who make out there are sexism issues when there aren't FFS. I have this conversation with my teen boys regularly as because of these sorts of accusation sexism ends up being minimised.

Being offended by a pun which IMO is totally reasonable given the fact she took her shirt off showing her bra is just ridiculous, it would have been offensive if he referred to her bra randomly.

I think sexism can often occur in subtle ways and have an influence on the way we think and I honestly think it’s important to be as alert to it as we are to the more ‘obvious’ stuff. Lots of posters here have been very anxious to prove that they have a sense of humour and that the player brought these jokes on herself rather than just considering for a moment whether he would have focused on a male player taking his shirt off in the same way if the men’s team had won. He wouldn’t have done that, would he? I think it’s important that women and girls are allowed to say ‘am I right to feel uncomfortable with this comment?’ without being dismissed and characterised as a humourless purse clutcher. Of course please disagree if you want to, that’s everyone’s right but please don’t call another woman ridiculous. It doesn’t help us or our sons/daughters to shut down debate.

Some of these pseudo feminist precious comments are cringeworthy. They back up every single man, who says women should keep out of football. There was one woman, who embarrassed herself on Lineker's other tweet about women playing football being so simple. She jumped straight on it, not knowing he was quoting a famous football saying. Quite frankly, all of this is just ignorant and sets women's progress back, way more than Lineker does. You know Lineker, the one who champions women's football.

MrsMitford3 · 01/08/2022 09:16

he is an absolute twat who will jump on any available band wagon.

It was a shitty thing to tweet-somehow making her accomplishment highlighted by her bra.
No need to say that at all-but he is the same person who claimed he was subjected to racism because of his dark skin so like I said-any bandwagon.

He is an overpaid self important wanker and @Margot78 I agree-so unnecessary and disparaging to make it about a women's bra versus their achievement.
Doing something he never did so his bitter salty tears are flowing.

Be more like the amazing Ian Wright who used his role as pundit to big up the women's game and women's sport.

Not lower it to women's undergarments in a cheap attempt for twitter likes.

achillestoes · 01/08/2022 09:18

I can’t get worked up about it.

Smokealarmwakeup · 01/08/2022 09:18

I’ve just got really annoyed at a Facebook status by someone I know (he’s a gay man). Apparently you can’t leave it to the mens team the “gays and the girls need to bring it home”.

I didnt see any gay men on the pitch helping, did anyone else?

theDudesmummy · 01/08/2022 09:19

I would not denigrate those who found it sexist, I can see their point of view, I just personally did not think it really was.

howdoesatoastermaketoast · 01/08/2022 09:19

ffs

Benjispruce4 · 01/08/2022 09:20

It’s not causing offence to me as a woman and mother of girls. Wish she’d kept her shirt on though, I don’t see the need to celebrate by removing clothing. Thought women were better than that.

theDudesmummy · 01/08/2022 09:22

@Smokealarmwakeup that is an extraordinary comment for a gay man to make. Are gay men not men as far as he is concerned?

There were at least six gay players on that team, women can be gay too.

PegasusReturns · 01/08/2022 09:25

For people asking “what’s wrong with Gary” the general consensus in the business is he’s a creepy lechy cheat.

Dontwanttoberudeorwastetime · 01/08/2022 09:25

Sexism isn’t taken seriously because it’s too ingrained into our culture. Not because some women notice subtle ways in which women are undermined.

Floisme · 01/08/2022 09:27

I’ll tell you who I was annoyed with and that was Kelly for getting herself booked so needlessly. I hate it when players do that - reckless behaviour that, had things panned out differently, could have cost us the game.

PegasusReturns · 01/08/2022 09:28

Seems Gary deleted his post ….

The over sensitive reaction to banter merely serves to fuel that ingrained sexism then.

PegasusReturns · 01/08/2022 09:30

@theDudesmummy presumably the gay man was celebrating the fact that half the women on the pitch were lesbians.

I disagree. Telling women to shut up and stop taking about sexism and subtle instances fuels ingrained sexism.

theDudesmummy · 01/08/2022 09:32

But he said "the gays and the girls", so if lesbians are what he is referring to, then they are not girls?

Jedsnewstar · 01/08/2022 09:34

Margot78 · 01/08/2022 00:09

It’s casual sexism from someone who is supposed to be a respected player and pundit. He should have just taken the opportunity to say well done and not made it all about her underwear. Do we really have to keep dismissing this stuff?

No it’s not.

Except this is NOT sexism. When women are being told to shut up about real sexism, I will be right on it. Lineker looks to have deleted his tweet. He is a mug for doing that. Good old cancel culture; a reflection of the entitlement since 2020.

Ooohhhhhhhh
So we’re only permitted to discuss sexism when YOU are offended by or YOU notice?
That seems reasonable.

RedHelenB · 01/08/2022 09:38

@Margot78 yes he would have done a pun about it if it was a male had done something punnable. It's the nature of his tweets. You can tell he's very proud of the women's teams achievements and that's what I'm concentrating on, not whether a bra should be bandied about in publuc.
