The idiot has put ‘the lionesses have only gone and done it and Kelly is England’s heroine bra none’. Why did he feel the need for a sexist quip about the goal celebration? So embarrassing.

@Mississipi71
How about stop blaming women for sexism?

Wow, joyless

Valeriekat · 01/08/2022 09:43

Perhaps she shouldn't have taken her top off then. But no he as a man should not have said it.

Piggywaspushed · 01/08/2022 09:43

Tulipomania · 01/08/2022 08:59

I don't think it's sexist. She chose to run around in her bra. She may come to regret that as that image may come to define her for decades, but it's her choice.

It was a witty pun, I'm usually the first to get offended by sexism but this doesn't qualify for me.

As has already mentioned, it was in homage to US footballer Brandi Chastain and that has been called 'the most iconic photo ever taken of a female athlete' , so I doubt Kelly will 'regret' this.

Yes. It’s always the woman’s fault. Either inviting and encouraging sexist comments or taking issue with (what they believe to be) sexist comments and not talking about “the right issues”
Silly women.

Dontwanttoberudeorwastetime · 01/08/2022 09:37

Ooohhhhhhhh
So we’re only permitted to discuss sexism when YOU are offended by or YOU notice?
That seems reasonable.

Come back and talk sexism when you have read football pages on social media, or worked in male predominated sports environments. You can keep being a professional offence taker, while I will carry on differentiating discrimination and prejudice from banter.

I’ll tell you who I was annoyed with and that was Kelly for getting herself booked so needlessly. I hate it when players do that - reckless behaviour that, had things panned out differently, could have cost us the game.

Agree with this, stupid move from a fantastic player. Linekar is an arse generally so 🤷🏻‍♀️, its nothing you wouldn’t expect from him.

BarrelOfOtters2 · 01/08/2022 08:20

Double standards I know but if say, nigelfarage or Boris Johnson had tweete it I’d have been more annoyed. But Gary has been super supportive….

I'd be annoyed if they even congratulated the team. It's nothing to do with them and I hate it when politicians jump on the bandwagon. Especially when they only congratulate footballers (and Emma Radecanu) and not the many other amazing sportsmen and women who get ignored most of the time and might if lucky get a cursory mention at the time of the Olympics.

As I said above, if you care about sexism in sport, tweet the media and tell them to start covering womens sport properly and equally. Gary's quip is not worth getting your sportsbra in a twist about.

No. I don’t need to go away and come back when I have the same opinion as you. I notice small, subtle examples of sexism. I don’t need your permission to talk about it.
Stop silencing women.

‘Banter’ is the oldest excuse in the book…along with accusing women of not having a sense of humour.

She whipped her top off and ran round the field in her bra. Of course people will comment. His comment was mild. I thought what she did was stupid- why do it? Because men whip there top off? Women don't need to behave like men. It wasn't an ironic action, as has been suggested, it was dim.

Simonjt · 01/08/2022 10:00

theDudesmummy · 01/08/2022 09:32

But he said "the gays and the girls", so if lesbians are what he is referring to, then they are not girls?

It’s a thing, a lot of gay people see themselves as seperate to straight people, its something a lot of gay men and women do. I play for an inclusive rugby team, some of our players are straight, we are very much the gays and the guys.

CornishGem1975 · 01/08/2022 10:01

Literally a pun. That's all. A harmless pun. Plenty of men have had puns written about them in the same way. If she hadn't have whipped off her top then agree, the pun would have been misplaced but she did.

This world is a fucking ridiculous overly woke mess.

LuluBlakey1 · 01/08/2022 10:02

They're going home in 48 hours. Grit your teeth and get on with it and don't allow it again.

Smokealarmwakeup · 01/08/2022 10:02

Simonjt · 01/08/2022 09:22

There were at least six gay players on that team, women can be gay too.

They are still women though so it’s obvious he wasn’t talking about them. Or are gay women not “normal” women?

I agree. Joyless. Divisions would heal quicker without trouble makers shit stirring.

amusedbush · 01/08/2022 10:10

It's a bit weird to tweet about it. Sports bras aren't a secret; female athletes performing other sports often do so in just a bra and shorts and nobody thinks anything of it.

I will also say that lots of male footballers now wear some fancy GPS tech that looks like a sports bra. When they take off their tops in celebration, it looks no different to a female footballer doing the same. Are those men also "the best, bra none"...?

Well that just shows how much you know about women's football. It was a homage to Brandi Chastain who has been immortalised in a statue for doing the same when she scored the winning goal at the US/China final.

And they were totally in control of the ball after that.

EhatBow · 01/08/2022 10:12

I thought it was quite clever, but yes, also unnecessary to mention it among all the other things that could be said.

However I'm afraid the cynic in me thinks none of these things happen by accident. She knew what the headlines would be and she will make a fortune from them. He knew his Tweet would have everyone talking. Both live in a world where all publicity is good publicity.

Margot78 · 01/08/2022 10:15

I think you’re spot on.

I wouldn't be surprised if Nike paid her to do it.

ShandaLear · 01/08/2022 10:19

Lineker is one of women’s football biggest cheerleaders, but you pick up on this? Direct that outrage where it’s deserved - it’s not like there’s a shortage.

Really? If women would stop being such miserable nags, there’d be no sexism?

Can you really not see your own internalised misogyny here? Women who notice subtle sexism and talk about it are not missing a sense of humour. They’re not causing sexism. They’re not letting other women down.

Stop belittling women and their right to talk about perceived sexism!
