To think Lineker should apologise for his tweet

The idiot has put ‘the lionesses have only gone and done it and Kelly is England’s heroine bra none’. Why did he feel the need for a sexist quip about the goal celebration? So embarrassing.

Yeah, 5 minutes from the end of second half of extra time is not something I'd worry about
Really? You don't think a lot can happen in 5 minutes when everyone's knackered and half the players are distracted, already dreaming about lifting the cup?
Play to the whistle was what I learned.

Of course they were playing until the whistle. But she was unlikely to get a second yellow card.

And If I'd been her, I'd have done the same thing. Certainly I didn't see any of her team mates getting pissy with her about it.

Floisme · 01/08/2022 11:34

I'd have fined her 😀

Floisme · 01/08/2022 11:34

If I were her manager that is

abblie · 01/08/2022 11:45

I can't stand him

Cam22 · 01/08/2022 11:50

OP:

She was the embarrassing one. That was a tacky display.

lljkk · 01/08/2022 11:55

"internalised misogyny" is exactly the sort of phrase that makes me despair of anyone on MN calling themselves a "feminist".

"You disagreed with because you have IM!"

FFS. Talk about how to lose friends & influence over people.

friendlycat · 01/08/2022 11:56

I just can't believe the amount of people getting all frothed up about this tweet.

If anything Kelly should have known better not to have done what she did as it's against the rules of the game (for both male and female players). She got yellow carded for it which was the correct judgement by the ref.

GL is hugely supportive of women's football. He made one of his normal pun comments that reflected the moment.

JudgeJ · 01/08/2022 12:29

PugInTheHouse · 01/08/2022 08:47

Yes first thing on our dept MS Teams group this morning was a man congratulating the women's team and our boss (female) commenting 'if you want a job doing properly get women to do it' everyone incl the men laughed. It's a joke and she absolutely does not mean that but because we're all grown ups we're not offended and took it in the way it was intended.

Thank goodness there are still some sane workplaces!
All this contrived fuss about what was, for him, quite a witty remark yet no complaints at all about all the suggestions that the women's coach should take over the men's team etc etc.. Some people really do need to grow up.

daisychain01 · 01/08/2022 12:38

Thank goodness she didn't do an Erica Roe - people on here would be having the vapours😂

StarlightLady · 01/08/2022 12:56

Let's stick to facts.

  1. Regardless of gender, removing a top during a goal celebration is a yellow card offence.
  2. Most women wear bras especially when playing sport. In my case not doing so would lead to 2 black eyes.
  3. Sports bras are designed to be seen.
  4. Wearing a bra or referring to a bra is not sexist.
Snowraingain · 01/08/2022 13:00

It was a bad pun!
He’s been hugely supportive of the women’s game.
Its bradly worth bothering with.

SoupDragon · 01/08/2022 13:04

amusedbush · 01/08/2022 10:10

It's a bit weird to tweet about it. Sports bras aren't a secret; female athletes performing other sports often do so in just a bra and shorts and nobody thinks anything of it.

I will also say that lots of male footballers now wear some fancy GPS tech that looks like a sports bra. When they take off their tops in celebration, it looks no different to a female footballer doing the same. Are those men also "the best, bra none"...?

(Photo taken from Google)

No, because they aren't wearing a bra. It might look similar but it isn't one

SoupDragon · 01/08/2022 13:15

Women who notice subtle sexism and talk about it are not missing a sense of humour. They’re not causing sexism. They’re not letting other women down.

but some comments are just humorous banter and this tweet was exactly that. It was in context and an entirely appropriate pin. If he's said "what a Woman! Scores the winner and then gets her tits out" it would have been entirely different.

it's depressing when jokes can't be made purely because it's about something female. There is a line between banter and sexism and this tweet did not cross that.

Stop belittling women and their right to talk about perceived sexism!

"perceived" is the key word here. Also, There is equal dismissive of those who do not think this was sexist too.

I haven’t seen anywhere near the level of sneering and name calling from women who think this could or is an example of sexism compared to the other way around.
I think it’s perfectly reasonable to not see any sexism in the tweet; but to blame women for “causing” or “fuelling” sexism because they’re saying they do see sexism, to say these women are bad feminists, to say women should shut up and stop embarrassing other women, to say they are humourless harpies etc. I have seen multiple times on here, take exception to and will comment on.
There have been posts on here where the writer simply stated why they have a different view of the tweet because they have a different perception of the context etc. Fine. That’s a perfectly reasonable statement.
However, the ones that exemplify exactly what internalised misogyny is, I’m more than happy to point out.

Lurkinglaughinglearning · 01/08/2022 13:38

I hope none of the offended have a soft spot for Griff Ryhs Jones. His old sketch with the dear departed Mel Smith is a bit more problematic- although you could be positive and see the progress in 40 years

Oblomov22 · 01/08/2022 13:47

I'm a bit sad, it's a bit PC that he's now deleted it. Because no matter what you think of GL (sleaze) he is totally unbelievably 100% pro football, generally. Loves it and adores it. AND like pp said, like Ian wright, he has never been anything other than pro and championing for womens football.

SoupDragon · 01/08/2022 13:56

its there. The posts are positively dripping with superiority and how much more clever they are because they can spot sexism where others don't see it.

Snoozer11 · 01/08/2022 14:03

There always has to be a virtue signal nowadays. Can't possibly just enjoy the moment so people go out if their way to sabotage it.

It was the same last year when we lost on penalties, and we had to point out that three non-white people men might face some comments.

Here there's zero sexism in a tweet but they still have to apologise for it.

Well, this is an interesting conundrum.
You see sneering where I don’t but you expect me to take your word and respect your feelings on it.
I see sexism where you don’t but you think I should shut up because I’m wrong.

Oblomov22 · 01/08/2022 14:48

If, as a pp stated the sports bra's worn are a poor quality, we should be focusing on that!

IcedPurple · 01/08/2022 15:02

Gary Lineker can be a bit of a smarm but there was nothing wrong with this tweet, especially when taken in the context of his years of support for women's football. Not terribly funny, true, but not terribly offensive either.
