Prince George went with Kate and William to watch a match.. What a shame Princess Charlotte isn't there...!

There should definitely have been a female member of the Royal Family there (if they had to be there at all 🙄)

LoveLarry · 31/07/2022 22:48

What a sad weird thread.

I'm sure if she had really wanted to go, then she would have

They probably have something more interesting to do? Grin

It will be nil all when the whistle goes then they will lose at that thing where they all have a go at scoring a goal.

So no point watching. Football

Well, this post aged well Grin

LeevMarie · 01/08/2022 01:39

To be honest, she wouldn't have learned anything from the game this afternoon other than poor sportsmanship from the England team. No loss.

Words · 01/08/2022 06:01

Indeed it did! Grin
It was worth the risk though! Grin

Clairewentoverthemountain · 01/08/2022 06:29

She might not have wanted to go. What is better parenting? To force your child to attend something that they don't want to attend and won't enjoy for the sake of keeping up appearances, or respecting her decision and letting her stay home. I don't even like the royal family. AT ALL. But let's not read into things that aren't really there.

Clairewentoverthemountain · 01/08/2022 06:30

Also think it's just as sexist to assume that only a girl will want to watch the women's sports. It's good to take a little boy, in my opinion. Show him from a young age that women's sport is just as exciting as men's sport.

Elvira2000 · 01/08/2022 06:34

I hate football. I hate the hype about football. I can't begin to think why it would be thought a good thing to bring a 7 year old to 2-hour football match just because she is a girl.

Note members of my football-loving family did with young children. None got past half time.

Prince William is President of the Football Association, hence why he was there. If he hadn’t been there would have been huuuge complaints about the FA not treating women’s football seriously.

And FWIW he seemed genuinely excited and exuberant about the match, and the result. Just like his wife is about Wimbledon and tennis. They’re known for being a sport-loving couple.

Zero chance that I’d have taken a young child like Charlotte. Huge crowd, lots of noise and quite a long event to sit through.

I think they got it just right. I’m sure Charlotte would have been happier watching at home if she were genuinely interested.

@SpidersAreShitheads
of course PW should have been there. But there should have been a female there giving out the trophy IMO.

This was a huge, defining moment in women’s sport the ripples of which will reach far further. It was disappointing that the trophy was then given by the future heir to an inherently patriarchal monarchy. Imagine if Kate had given the trophy with William at her side - what a moment that would have been!

Kate was sailing yesterday in the SW with Ben Ainslie.

Longdistance · 01/08/2022 07:37

William was there in a working capacity. I don’t take my dc to work.
As for Charlotte congratulating the team, it was lovely. If they chose George to do it, there would’ve been complaints for that too.
Damned if they do, damned if they don’t.
Really pleased the ladies won. One in the eye for the overpaid mens teams.

lickenchugget · 01/08/2022 07:43

My 7yo DD would not have wanted to watch football. Just because she was in the video, doesn’t mean she actually likes football. She is a person, she doesn’t need wheeled out because random people in the country want to see her on TV.

Daysy · 01/08/2022 08:35

I’m sure they have people who can sort their diaries out.

saraclara · 01/08/2022 08:43

Tougherpolicies · 31/07/2022 17:42

I'd have to love to have seen her there too

Ffs. The pressure on royals starts early.

"But the public WANTS you there, Charlotte. Yes I know that you're only a child and that you are looking forward to doing what you had planned for today, but @Tougherpolicies wants to see you representing her sex at this event"

saraclara · 01/08/2022 08:47

Daysy · 01/08/2022 08:35

I’m sure they have people who can sort their diaries out.

At the time that royal diaries were planned, I doubt anyone foresaw England winning.

And ffs, these poor royal kids...

How many of us as parents would put or seven year olds through tiring day long obligations over and over again, to appease others.

toastofthetown · 01/08/2022 09:08

I couldn’t give a crap which sporting events a child I don’t know attends.

Daysy · 01/08/2022 09:14

Why are SO many people missing the point here?!

melj1213 · 01/08/2022 09:18

YABU - she's a 7 year old girl she has no obligation to anyone, Princess or not.

I may be wrong as I don't follow the Royals schedules closely but every event I've seen them take any of the children to has been when both William and Catherine have been there together. I've never seen them at an official engagement where only one parent has been there with one or more of the children - so I would assume that they have an agreement that if one of them has to attend an official event in a work capacity (As William was doing last night as President of the FA) they only take the children if the other parent is available to attend and make it a "family" event. Otherwise when William went off to do his official role they'd have to have people looking after Charlotte alone, and while I am sure she is used to being left with the nanny/family at home, it's different to a big event like a football final where she will be left surrounded by strangers. As Catherine had other work commitments elsewhere last night that's probably why none or the children attended, if she had been available they may have taken both Charlotte and George together.

Additionally, DD was brought up in a football loving household and loves the game now at 12, but it's one been the last couple of years where she has actually been able to sit through a game and paid attention for the whole match. Before this she would watch for about 10/15 minutes; wander off to play or do something like colouring on the carpet in front of the TV so it was on in the background but wasn't her main focus; watch again for about 10 mins of the start of the second half; do another activity and then maybe come back to the game just before the full time whistle. If other cousins/friends were watching the game she occasionally watched longer but equally they would often just distract each other/want to play instead so would watch even less.

If Charlotte is anything like that they probably decided letting her watch the game at home, on the sofa with snacks and nobody watching her every move if she got a bit bored/restless was the better option.

NerdyBird · 01/08/2022 09:31

My dd is about a year older than Charlotte. She likes playing football and recently joined a team. However, a full 90 min match is too long for her to watch, not to mention extra time. Even if Charlotte does genuinely like playing football, watching it is a different matter entirely!

sunglassesonthetable · 01/08/2022 09:49

Give the 7yr old kid a break. It's 90 mins plus all the rest.

She'll be trotted out in due course.

Why would Kate have given out the trophy? The medals were given out by the President of UEFA, and the trophy was jointly given by him and Prince William as president of the FA. If either of those roles were held by women, they'd have given the trophy out. It would be weird to switch out the president for his wife, just because women were playing.

I think a better question would be when will there be a female president of either the FA or UEFA. I imagine that will be quite a while..

Why would someones wife give out the trophy? Thats no different to a female leading member of the FA having her husband give out medals at the mens euros.

ajandjjmum · 01/08/2022 10:13

I reckon George told her not to bother - he was bored and too hot at Wimbledon, so best stay home, play and eat icecream.

It's a matter of record that she likes football, and is good in goal! William told the lionesses that she wanted them to know that on one of his recent visits. I know people upthread have said the same, but subsequent posters are still saying 'maybe she doesn't like football' so thought I'd say it too! Grin

Have you somehow missed the thousands of years of women’s oppression at the hands of the patriarchy?
