To think that no one will give a shit about climate change when they're freezing this winter?

Turnandfacethestrangechanges · 30/07/2022 11:55

Just that really. When we have a choice of spanking out £650+ in January for gas and electric or slowly freezing, will people will be less sympathetic to 'green' measures?

Will net zero go out the window when we realise how bloody miserable it is to live without modern comforts and there is civil unrest as a result?

YABU - Don't be ridiculous, climate change is the most important issue
YANBU - How true, I predict a riot

vote for parties that support global measures

Do you think every country has the same impact on a global level or that every country is being punished equally when it comes to this green agenda? Think again

Oh. yes! So unfair. Let's do nothing and destroy the planet out of political spite!

It's not like an argument over the housework, and who is pulling their weight or not - but there are global sanctions.

Maybe you have a better idea of how those in poverty, struggling to survive can help, though?

SusiePevensie · 02/08/2022 00:36

It's not either/or. Good insulation and investing in renewable energy helps with cost of living as well as with climate crisis.

DdraigGoch · 02/08/2022 01:02

BullshitHunter · 01/08/2022 22:12

Well you are a bit pedantic about the passport, but you may be one of the rare ones who gives a shit. But it is not about you is it.

You won't get raspberry yields in a polytunnel by the way. Or find heated ones in Morroco or Spain (or should do in the UK for that matter - the plastic does all the work).

If you have a pannier, you can afford to buy solar panels.

Strawberries are frequently grown in heated polytunnels in the UK, especially out of season. Mangetout is often airfreighted from Morocco. I've enjoyed both this year, straight from my garden.

A pannier from Halfords costs £20. Solar panel supply & installation starts at £5k or so, I don't get how you think that I could afford solar panels if I can afford a pannier.

NorthStarRising · 02/08/2022 01:09

We fit almost all of those criteria, have done for three decades.
Because we’re on a limited income. The fact we’re concerned about climate change is in addition to that.

apintortwo · 01/08/2022 18:20

I haven’t looked into it loads but from the few articles I’ve seen it looks that NZ is the popular choice

I'm also curious as to why NZ is a popular choice for global billionaires as it's been heavily co-opted by the Left. One example of the lunacy is the current fight they have over the control of South Island water.

Or maybe the global elites can rest assured that for some reason they won't be denied the resources they are working so hard to make scarce for everyone else but themselves?

www.theguardian.com/world/2021/dec/25/trauma-dislocation-pollution-why-maori-leaders-want-control-of-the-south-islands-water

It is a very long way away from everthing else so massive population movements etc won't impact it. It has a temperate climate and small population. It has lots of unspoiled wild areas and therefore much good quality soil still.

TurquoisePterodactyl · 02/08/2022 03:10

Also very unlikely to be involved in any major conflict or war or nuclear incident.

MrsDThomas · 02/08/2022 06:45

Come to my house. Traditional stone cottage with a whacking big inglenook with a multi fuel stove.

ill be burning 🔥 .

all welcome

MrsDThomas · 02/08/2022 06:50

2 of my neighbours (we’re all landowners) have tried to get planning permission in their land to place solar panels. On the ground, just enough to supply their own property and both have been declined.

the reason? It doesn’t sit well in the area. Rural, out side the National park but still a no.

so people are trying but being blocked because if the area. There is no wind turbine in sight neither, besides living in a mountain side where wind is inevitable.

apintortwo · 02/08/2022 09:23

Have you read the article and stayed on top of current affairs over there? It can hardly be anyone's idea of heaven ATM

apintortwo · 01/08/2022 16:33

YANBU OP

We cannot control world climate from a tiny island like the UK. Somebody needs to put a stop to this ridiculous idea

No, but we can make a difference to our own air pollution and improve things as much as we can.

Reduce air pollution = fewer deaths and less illness (and is just nicer)

Have more trees and plants to help combat flooding, and also help to reduce temperatures.

This isn't just a macro issue, it's a local one as well.

SuperPets · 02/08/2022 10:12

Turnandfacethestrangechanges · 30/07/2022 12:04

Personally I would be happy for them to get the fires on and bugger net zero.

Set fire to the world so you don't need to wear a jumper in your nice house in a western country with a temperate climate.

Yes, of course you're fucking unreasonable.

WinterMusings · 02/08/2022 11:31

yardstickbarbedstick · 31/07/2022 15:31

@WinterMusings I agree nobody can have all the information but the Information we do have available to us (general public not just experts) is that we are literally walking into a disaster where resources could become scares quickly.

Energy from the sun and wind and everything else definitely won't be scared. As the sun shines every day. Right?

Soil is degrading. I have a vegetable patch and it's shocking how bad the soil can look after just one year. You need to look after it , feed it and keep it fairly untouched.
We need more small market gardens. Big farms are losing soil basically.

Loads of problems seem like no brainers.
Why can't farmers who are struggling rent their 20 acres to 20 different marekt gardeners? Thats income coming in. 20 new businesses. everyone needs to eat. the soil could be less disturbed by individuals working rather than massive machines.
Hasn't the price of fertiliser shot up?
I just feel like it's obvious.

Different, scary but obvious we cant carry on riding until the horse is lame, we might have to get off and walk for a bit.

@yardstickbarbedstick

🤦🏻‍♀️ A few farmers renting out their fields is NOT going to stop Global Warming.

If that's your answer to the crisis you need to be better informed & less patronising.

Onlyhereforthebatshitneighbours · 02/08/2022 11:38

@WinterMusings I don't think she's proposing that example as the solution to global warming!

She's alluded to the fact that we operate our economies and industries on mass scales and that more effective local use of resources is one way to reduce reliance on massive suppliers, which could have a knock on effect. Also that by allowing greater access and use of resources by locals could result in better ecological practices.

There isn't one grand solution to global warming- it's one thing to say we need to effectively stop carbon emissions but in order do this we need to adopt smaller solutions that impact the communities which would be effected.

I'm not explaining myself very well but hopefully well enough!

Humans will survive, but adaption will be necessary in the same way it was millions of years ago. People migrate, grow different foods, hunt different foods.

Lots of other species wont survive and some will.

There are places in the world now which are uninhabitable due to the cold, they will open up and people will move there

Not in my lifetime but over thousands of years in the future.

There will be 40 degree heat, there already is in a number of places in the world and no one is looking to move away from there, parts of India for example have been inhabited with temperatures like that.

Some humans may survive the catastrophic climate change which is predicted if we continue on our current path, but billions of them will die through conflict and starvation. Not in thousands of years. In the next 50-100 years.

There is currently 40 degree heat in India and almost never 40 degree heat in the UK. But if there is regularly 40 degree heat in the UK, how hot and dry do you imagine India will be?

Climate systems may also reach a tipping point, where runaway, irreversible change takes place. A global rise in temperatures of 2 or 3 degrees doesn't mean it will be slighter warmer everywhere on average, it will set in train changes in the melting of the ice caps, the desertificiation of verdant areas, changes in ocean currents like the Gulf Stream which will combine to mean it gets hotter and hotter and hotter.

We cannot as a society ignore this or postpone this. We need to rapidly end our use of fossil fuels.

MasterBeth · 02/08/2022 11:53

apintortwo · 01/08/2022 17:12

if we all continue with trying to pretend climate change isn’t an issue/ we can safely ignore it then things are only going to get worse

Are you certain that adverse climate change is mainly caused by human activity? How? I'm not

Then you are a loon. This is globally accepted, peer-reviewed science. You might as well say you're not 100% sure the world is round.

WinterMusings · 02/08/2022 11:57

paddingtonstares · 30/07/2022 15:51

Not read the full thread, but I did think that a lot of people who have homes with boarded over chimney breasts with open fire behind will be reopening them and foraging for wood. Particularly in more rural areas. This could end up with more house fires though as a lot won't be properly cleaned etc.

@paddingtonstares

I wonder how long it takes to train as a chimney sweep & how much start up capital is required?

and we still have a month of school holidays left. Plus might as well keep them warm & busy as sat in a cold classroom hey!

Onlyhereforthebatshitneighbours · 02/08/2022 11:59

I love the word 'loon'.

From what I've seen chimney sweeps just have a chimey-version of Henry the Hoover and give it a big old vacuum out.

WinterMusings · 02/08/2022 12:00

TonTonMacoute · 30/07/2022 17:55

Well, in Germany even the Greens have agreed to re-opening some coal fired power stations for the winter, so I think you might be right OP.

I see that as a 'put your oxygen mask on first'.

we need to survive the weather & col etc. in order to make long term changes & gains.

MasterBeth · 02/08/2022 12:11

Suetwo · 30/07/2022 13:30

No. That heatwave really shook people up. They aren’t going to forget 40 degrees in a hurry. When it’s so hot in London that people are advised to stay indoors, well, you know something is wrong.

Will people change their way of life? I doubt it. People know that what we do in this island makes little difference. Even if every Brit switched to an electric car, stopped flying, planted a tree, etc, it wouldn’t affect the global climate. China, India and the USA are the biggest polluters, and Africa has the highest birth rate.

What a stupid perspective.

We are not the only country bothered by climate change and we're not the only country taking action. We all have to take action, together, by shaping new technologies and culture internationally.

MasterBeth · 02/08/2022 12:13

springisaroundthecorner · 30/07/2022 12:57

The earth is heading into a cooling phase.

Another loon.

MasterBeth · 02/08/2022 12:19

StolenWillowTree · 30/07/2022 13:25

I feel exactly, exactly the same way.

I honestly don't think it would be a bad thing if humanity went extinct - so many species have, why should we be special?

Imagine the incalulable human misery, suffering and despair of billions of people across dozens of generations slowly going extinct (that is, dying through hunger, thirst, war, disease) because their planet is burning. "I honestly don't think it would be a bad thing." What an inhuman thing to say. Unspeakably evil.

fizzywat · 02/08/2022 12:20

I am doing my bit, but I absolutely refuse to incur expense to help the Green agenda. If it is so important let the Government pay a subsidy for everyone to achieve net zero. I cannot afford to do it alone.

Going green helps save you money.

No car
No flights
No consumer goods
No waste

Saves a fortune.

@Onlyhereforthebatshitneighbours

No but she keeps saying if she was in charge, she could solve the entire Global Warming issue & yet she has very little grasp on the issues.

It's like having a 5 year old tell you that you need to buy petrol when the engine has just blown up & there's fuel all over the road.

they're not wrong exactly, they just have no real grasp of the situation.
