AIBU to shove this paper plate up the Vinted seller’s arse?

VintedShminted · 25/07/2022 20:22

Ordered some Nike Air Jordan’s for my DD’s birthday from Vinted.

The package arrived today, except what I actually received was a folded up paper plate in a tiny mailing bag.

Please reassure me that I haven’t lost all my money because I can’t afford to get her anything else. Have just reported to Vinted. I know on eBay it’s easy enough for sellers to scam people by sending an empty box or whatever so I’m hoping this isn’t the same.

It's always trainers that scammers 'sell'. It was the same with ebay and other intranet selling scams

I've bought several things from vinted, but wouldn't trust anyone selling trainers.

Are you the same person who posted yesterday saying they'd bought Bose headphones on Vinted and yep, also received a paper plate?

No, she's not, and neither are the other 5 or 6 posters on this thread who have also received a paper plate instead of their actual purchase.

VintedShminted · 26/07/2022 00:24

Thanks for all the messages offering support to DD. She’s calmed down now and is being surprisingly philosophical about it. I took her shopping on Saturday so that she had some bits to open yesterday and she chose some clothes, everything she got was bought with matching her new Jordan’s in mind. The ones that will never come 😞. She’s just said maybe she could get some for Christmas, bless her. I feel like a shit mum, I should have done some research. Hopefully the money will be refunded and I can get her something else.

But yeah not having Nike air Jordan’s isn’t the worst thing that could happen to a kid, need to keep some perspective.

Post on Reddit as well. Hope you get your money back.

Yikes, just read the twitter and Reddit threads, as well as recent Vinted trustpilot reviews and so many people have been scammed, and it seems it’s often not straightforward to get your money back (and many lost their money for good). Think I’ll phone the bank in the morning.

Will be deleting Vinted once I resolve this.

Was thinking of using Vinted but won’t now.

Wam90 · 26/07/2022 01:52

I use Vinted loads for buying and selling and although I’ve never received a paper plate (touch wood!) I have received items that are damaged in transit or once received completely the wrong thing because my label had been stuck to someone else’s parcel at some point.
As long as report the issue and provide all the requested photos and details to Vinted within 48 hours of marking it as an issue then they’ll process everything. It did take about 2 weeks for them to investigate my parcel where the label had ended up on something else but I still got my refund in the end.
Just make sure you send photos and details as soon as you’re asked for them and probably go onto help and report it that way too so you’re 100% covered. They’ll only release the money to the seller if you say everything is okay or if you don’t upload the proof to them. I hope you get it sorted soon 🤞🏼.

Be careful. I read that the plates are infused with LSD so I’d wash your hands and def don’t put on the cat

Oh aye and the moon is made of cheese.

LSD is not cheap, what would be the point exactly, its not as if the sender would see you mysteriously trip your tits off...

It was clearly a joke. You know, humour?

Mollyplop999 · 26/07/2022 05:48

I hadn't seen this post and just started a new thread yesterday as the same happened to me. Paper plate through the letter box. I had purchased a pair of Bose headphones.

MichelleScarn · 26/07/2022 07:28

Have had message from vinted to say I'll have my refund within 5 days. Fingers crossed (all non LSD tripping of course! 😆) for all!

OP gather your evidence. There should be a weight on the package.
A paper pate and a pair of trainers will have very different weights.

VintedShminted · 26/07/2022 08:15

@MichelleScarn that’s great news, what a relief for you 😊. I’ve had nothing from Vinted so far. I would imagine they are pretty inundated with paper plate reports at the moment.

OP posts:
Terven · 26/07/2022 08:23

The Post office weight the packet, no way a pair of trainers would weigh the same. Was it tracked?

Terven · 26/07/2022 08:24

Just realised it was Evri . Maybe they have that info too?

upliftingtwisting · 26/07/2022 08:51

What’s the end result of the scam for the scammer? The buyer will get their money back so is it the scammer hoping the buyer won’t report within the 2 days?

Belovedfool · 26/07/2022 08:55

OP, I hope you get it sorted, it certainly sounds like you will. I'm so sorry your wee girl's birthday was blighted by this, though.

I'm guessing the distance selling regulations apply to Vinted and I don't think it's 2 days - you should have 6 months to get a refund (presumably if something falls apart after a few uses, or you gold earrings start to turn green). If Vinted don't comply with the UK distance selling laws, they're breaking the law themselves, aren't they?

MichelleScarn · 26/07/2022 08:58

@upliftingtwisting in my case the seller changed the pick up point to somewhere hundreds of miles away and kept changing delivery date, wonder if they just kept doing that then picked it up themselves they could say I'd done it and then muck about more so would automatically go through?

updownleftrightstart · 26/07/2022 08:59

VintedShminted · 25/07/2022 21:22

@updownleftrightstart as far as I know they used the label Vinted provided that I paid for. I didn’t think there was any other way of sending things if you sell on Vinted, although I’m no expert as I’ve never sold anything on there.

If they did, they would have had to list the item as being a small parcel on Vinted; otherwise you’d have been charged more for the label. So firstly always check the parcel size they’ve selected matches with what size the item should be. But also it’s extra evidence they were never sending any shoes which might help your case.

Belovedfool · 26/07/2022 09:00

www.gov.uk/online-and-distance-selling-for-businesses

I sell through Folksy, a handmade craft hub, and my address etc has to be visible to buyers, I have to supply bank info etc, in order to comply with the law.

Vinted aren't selling the item, they're hosting the sellers, so if they're making it easy for sellers to defraud buyers, I suspect they deserve a visit from fair trading or whoever the correct authority is. Even Vinted holding your money for a few days surely makes Vinted a penny or two before they refund you. If that happens 1000 times a day.....

HailAdrian · 26/07/2022 09:08

That sucks! I've used Vinted for buying and selling and never had a problem but I've just looked up 'vinted paper plate' and it is a thing. Wtf!? Are you able to leave a review yet?

MistressoftheDarkSide · 26/07/2022 09:09

Hi OP - I’m so sorry to hear about your experience and hope it gets sorted soon and that your DD is ok now x

Thank you for posting about this - have been thinking of using Vinted but am now wary….

Reading the whole thread and volume of scams, I have a conspiracy theory….. could this be some sort of industrial espionage?

Bear with me - so, if people are stopping using eBay, and I’ve also heard a fair few horror stories about Etsy, is it feasible that a platform like eBay could orchestrate scammers to infiltrate sites like Vinted and cause enough disruption and wariness about this relatively new site that people will stick with or go back to their site?

I know it sounds mildly batshit, but if you think about it, there’s never been a credible alternative to eBay - and I always wondered why as surely it wouldn’t be beyond a tech wizard to iron out the glitches and offer a better service?

Or maybe I’m on LSD 😂

But in the profit hungry world we live in, nothing would surprise me….,

Haudyourwheesht · 26/07/2022 09:10

I've used Vinted a lot, both buying and selling and never had any bother so it's not all bad. My DDs are still too young to care about branded stuff though, so it's mostly worn once Monsoon dresses I'm spending my money on! I think the advice on here re sellers with no feedback and weird usernames is probably sound, although I'm pretty sure I'd not have clocked that myself.

VintedShminted · 26/07/2022 09:11

The postage I paid was £4.20, and the weight on the package was 99g. Although I’d be surprised if it did actually weigh that much.
