I've been working overtime today, exhausted, feel like shit.

My 3 year old had a plate of corned beef, cheese and sweetcorn for his tea.

Did I just win the award for most 'that'll do' tea?

He quite enjoyed it tbf! He asked for more.

Ready for today to be done 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫

My 70s primary school in Kent had them too. If you had them for mains and then gypsy tart for afters then it was just the best school lunch ever.

Ohhh, Gypsy Tart, (salivating) 😍

PudKit · 27/07/2022 10:30

That there is a balanced meal. Crack on.

LoisLane66 · 27/07/2022 10:37

@RobertsRadio
Gypsy tart? Is that the one with pastry, jam, sponge and dessicated coconut served with Birds custard? 🙏

Accountsdept · 27/07/2022 10:54

This Corned beef stew tastes lovely and is perfect on a cold day:

1 onion, 1 carrot, 1 large potato, handful of swede, 3 tins of hinz veg soup, large handful of lentils, 1 beef stock cube, 1 tin of corned beef flaked in and dumplings on top!

InChocolateWeTrust · 27/07/2022 10:56

My best CBA go to is plain couscous (just add boiling water & voila!) Take whatever veg is in the fridge & whizz it with can canned tomatoes. Add spam & voila.

My two had cold tinned spaghetti tonight.

I would have heated it up, but they wanted it cold. My daughter toasted her bagel. I just spread the butter on it.

Nice and easy and went down well.

Excellent! I thought I was the only oddbod to eat cold spaghetti. Admittedly I eat it out the tin. It's great for a hangover 🤣

🤣🤣🤣
That is not a CBA meal!
Come back when you’ve looked at cous cous and thought, “hmmm, can you eat that dry from the packet do you think?”

Testina · 27/07/2022 12:27

I mean, you’ve actually just described a planned and prepared meal there 🤣

No, better than that! It's made by whisking evaporated milk and muscovado sugar, pouring into a pastry case then baking. Best thing about primary school by far!

I can vividly remember a school lunch which was spam fritters, mash and sliced beetroot in vinegar. Oh, how pretty the mash looked with the beetroot vinegar soaked into it.

Thinkingblonde · 27/07/2022 13:39

School dinners in the 60’s, Cheese pie ..(only it gone posh now and called quiche) with mash, beetroot and a lettuce leaf.
sometimes the mash was replaced with really thinly sliced potatoes then fried, I do them myself and love them. ( Game chips as mum called them)
Corned beef pasties with beans,
Fish pie, no potato served as it was in the pie, peas, carrots.
Spam fritters,
Beef cobbler, naked beef stew ( without the cobbler) naked beef stew with slimy cobbler ( dumplings)
mince and baked dumpling, Shepherds pie
Salads. Chicken dinner, chicken curry next day, Minced beef pie,
Manchester Tart, various sponge puddings with custard, Rice pud, always with a dollop of jam and a biscuit, tapioca, (frog spawn) semolina, (wallpaper paste)
cornflake cake ( concrete cake) custard tart, chocolate cake, with pink custard. Milky puddings,
Loved school dinners.

Sorry @LoisLane66 only just seen your post. No, I'm afraid not. As @SirChenjins said gypsy tart is a home made pastry case which is blind baked and then a large can of evaporated milk is whisked with dark muscovado sugar and then it is baked for about 15 mins and then left to cool during which time the filling turns to sweet sticky deliciousness.

I'm not sure what the pudding is that you describe, except that it sounds like Bakewell Tart, except this is made with ground almonds and normally flaked almonds on top, not desiccated coconuts - could it be this? Bakewell tart with custard is indeed a thing of wonder and actually is an equal in the deliciousness stakes with the aforementioned gypsy tart.

shinynewapple22 · 27/07/2022 15:17

I remember the desert @LoisLane66 is describing- we had with pink custard .

My favourite cold-out-of-the-tin meal is cold macaroni cheese - I think it's nicer cold than hot .

@PaniniHead yes I'm from the SE and have never seen corned beef in any supermarket here and never known anyone to eat it here either. I'm not a weirdo recluse. I'm very sociable so it won't have passed me by plus I'm in my 50's so would have come across it being eaten here by now. None of my northern friends have ever eaten it down here either and I've known some of them for 30 years

Well I'm in the SE too and have always eaten corned beef (mid 60's so many many years).

It's available in all the supermarkets, always has been, best value is Aldi. Makes superb hash.

I am in my 40s and grew up in Buckinghamshire and we certainly had corned beef. I used to love it in a sandwich with sliced tomatoes.

RicherThanYew · 27/07/2022 16:44

Here's a good one for you all, get a packet of gnocchi and do a quick boil, add some cooked chopped bacon and throw in some chopped broccoli. Cover in cheese and bake 😎

Ragwort · 27/07/2022 16:52

^^ That is the sort of thing I would do for a 'proper' evening meal, surely this thread is about quick sandwich or cheese and biscuits type meal?

This is a proper dinner??

PeloAddict · 27/07/2022 17:12

Yeah that's definitely a proper dinner!
I think there's a big difference between
CBA and eating a bowl of coco pops
Quick meals - like the gnocchi

SpiderVersed · 27/07/2022 17:26

16yo’s favourite CBA meal is a 3 minute pack of instant noodles with a handful of frozen peas chucked in. Tip into a big mug, add miso and sriracha, scoff.

(basically a Pot Noodle but without the bits she doesn’t like)

It costs about 60p and is done in the flash.

MrsToothyBitch · 27/07/2022 17:29

My cba meals: "hotdogs" - frankfurters in slices of bread, or oven pizza. Or just a tin of carnation milk. Got me through the worst of my pgce did carnation milk.

We are not big veg fans in this house though, so true lack of effort means zero attempts at veg. Tonight is more half arsed than proper lazy; pomodoro sauce I made at the weekend on the end of a packet of fresh tagliatelle.

MooseBreath · 27/07/2022 17:42

Definitely not the worst in this house. Last week when the heat was making me feel ill, 2YO DS had jam on bread and a banana.

NanaNelly · 27/07/2022 18:12

I like a pot of ramen noodles with some leftover chicken added to it and maybe a hard boiled gag if there is one in the fridge. It only takes minutes and it delicious.

A hard boiled gag would make me gag.

Baked beans eaten out of the tin with a spoon is heavenly 😋
Corned beef and tomato sandwiches or with beetroot and mustard or horseradish are divine!
