I've been working overtime today, exhausted, feel like shit.

My 3 year old had a plate of corned beef, cheese and sweetcorn for his tea.

Did I just win the award for most 'that'll do' tea?

He quite enjoyed it tbf! He asked for more.

Ready for today to be done 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫

I'm born and bred south east and corned beef and spam were staples in our house during my childhood (spam fritters cooked in batter, anyone?). I still love a bit of corned beef in sarnies or with some salad and sweet pickle, delicious.

My mother's CBA tea for us was toast and dripping (from the Sunday roast) with a little salt sprinkled on it. Food of the gods.

I bloody love a corned beef sandwich, preferably with thick white bread and salted butter. Gives you a thirst afterwards, but it's well worth the excess salt intake.

My CBA dinners generally revolve around cheese and bread, and sometimes eggs. Covers a multitude of possibilities. And the day I discovered frozen potato waffles can be cooked in the toaster was one I will never forget 😅

IN THE TOASTER!?

😍😍 😍

NannySarey · 26/07/2022 20:32

🤣

Last wk my 5 and 2 yr old had a fishfinger wrap for lunch with cucumber and tomatoes. On the same day for tea they had a fishfinger wrap with baked beans 🤷🏻‍♀️

pilkywilkymoansalot · 26/07/2022 20:49

An old friend from Derbyshire used to call it a medley, roll and butter few crisps, bit of ham and a tomatoe on a paper plate, all the kids loved it.

Rookie93 · 26/07/2022 21:12

As a child my favourite cba tea was a plate of cooked new or just small potatoes , some salt and butter. Add in a roll mop and that was bliss as far as I was concerned. Mum was v happy.

HappyDays40 · 26/07/2022 21:15

Best shit tea I've done was Jacob's crackers with plastic burger cheese and slices of apple.
Kid loved it.

Rainbowsandbutterflies1990 · 26/07/2022 21:16

I've just read the Thread and found 2 meals I usually do! That wasn't my cba me😳😁

LovelyIssues · 26/07/2022 21:18

Meat, veg and dairy. You're doing great Mumma x

I've heard of corned beef hash but don't know how to make it. Can I have instructions please for tomorrows tea?

best made with day old mash - loads of butter in a pan - in a bowl mush mash, corned beef and cheese (optional) together - place in hot pan - jiggle a bit, flip when a bit firm - do other side - add fried egg if you want to be fancy!

see also eggy bread - food of the Gods

ghostyslovesheets · 26/07/2022 21:22

also Tomato/potato combo - I'm so doing that

spam fritters cooked in batter, anyone - yes - staple 1970's Northern food!

Keha · 26/07/2022 21:29

Our CBA tea. Instant noodles with a tin of mackerel in tomato sauce mixed in.

See also Nigella's spaghetti with marmite.

Ohdofuckofdear · 26/07/2022 21:30

I think the tea you made sounds lovely OP, I bloody love corned beef and thanks to your thread I'm going to get some in and make a corned beef and potato pie for dinner tomorrow 😋.

JimmiChoux · 26/07/2022 21:33

I've not seen sugar sandwiches mentioned.

My mums can't be arsed tea would be white bread, proper butter then sprinkled liberally with white sugar. Bloody lovely.

I had two fillings by the time I was 10🦷

BraveFaceScaredInside · 26/07/2022 21:39

My grandson loves having a can of tinned meatballs in gravy for tea here hehehe

Before ballet (haha) my aunty Elsie (who wasn't my aunty but every adult female you knew was called that then) used to make us crisp sandwiches. Her other speciality was salad cream sandwiches. But the crisp ones were the best and favourite 'meal' of the week as I recall.

I bet a salad cream and crisp sarnie would be good.

Skodacool · 26/07/2022 21:53

If your DC will eat corned beef, cheese and sweetcorn you should be very proud 😁

UserError012345 · 26/07/2022 21:57

Mine was a ham roll tonight.

GoodGollyMissMolly7 · 26/07/2022 22:46

Try frying the corned beef, dipped in batter, had this often as child, yummy, corned beef fritters!

xmaswiththeinlaws · 26/07/2022 22:55

If you want to get your kids eating corned beef (yes they also still sell Spam), read Swallows and Amazons to them, they are always eating Pemmican (corned beef) and make it sound quite romantic. It even made me want to give it a go again.

wellstopdoingitthen · 26/07/2022 22:58

An imaginative tea. Has carbs, protein, fat & vitamins.

ooh I really fancy a corned beef & picalilie (so?) sarnie now. 😋

When DM was giving birth to my brother my DF asked 3 yr old me what I wanted for tea. I apparently answered choc ice and chips - and so that is what I was given. On the same plate at the same time 😂😂

it’s become a family legend- and the memory makes me smile when I think of my dear departed dad. He was an incredible cook, better than DM, but he obviously had a “can’t be fucked” evening too 😂😂

I’ve never heard this combination mentioned by anyone else so this has really made me smile!! This tea was dished up to me 40+ years ago - way before the internet was a thing! 😊

The choc ice and chips advert is from 1978, so it might have inspired your choice, @SpidersAreShitheads - it features a dad cooking tea while mum is in hospital with a new baby, so maybe 3 year old you thought it was the treat you got 😁

My favourite CBA (or my kids favourite) dinner is those packets of tortelloni they do in Lidl. Drop in boiling water, wait about 3 minutes and serve. On a good day they get stir in pasta sauce or grated cheese on top. Even quicker than the effort involved in getting a takeaway. Or baked bean toasted sandwiches in the sandwich toaster, sometimes with cheese if I'm putting effort in.
Most of my meals are pretty basic though to be fair, and my favourite kitchen gadget is the Clever Chef- a sort of slow cooker that does everything on a timer, while I go and have a rest or crack on with whatever else needs doing. This evening it was a bag of frozen paella, thrown in with a handful of frozen peas and set to saute 20 minutes. I just stir it and serve it when it beeps, it doesn't burn or boil over when I leave the room. The pan is non stick so very little effort involved in cleaning either. We are moving house this week so really have no time or energy for cooking, not that I enjoy cooking normally. I'm not usually one for wasting money on kitchen gadgets but this one is a game changer. it does rice, pasta, yoghurt, porridge, roasts, cakes, stews etc.

xmaswiththeinlaws · 26/07/2022 23:13

Most lunches at home, especially weekends/ holidays are known as "table picnics" Empty contents of fridge onto table (butter, any random salad, sliced meat or cheese), add bread, crisps on a good day, fruit bowl is already there, help yourself.

And sardines. I think that's part of why I like those, forked straight from the can, for a CBA lunch.

I feel much better about “can’t be f*** teas now after reading this thread. Tonight mine had, meatballs, carrots and new potatoes. In my head it looked much more normal that it actually did on the plate.
my kids do love what I call “lion tea” (whatever’s “lion” around…) where we just cook the random bits like the last few chicken nuggets, cocktail sausages / sausage rolls etc with vegetable sticks, nachos and a dip
