Did I just win the award for most 'I can't be fucked' tea for my DC?

I've been working overtime today, exhausted, feel like shit.

My 3 year old had a plate of corned beef, cheese and sweetcorn for his tea.

Did I just win the award for most 'that'll do' tea?

He quite enjoyed it tbf! He asked for more.

Ready for today to be done 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫

I buy the tinned corned beef, £2.50 ish a tin now, the trick to opening the tin is to do it slowly and follow the etched guide lines on the tin, and keep the strip of tin even on the key as you work it round. If it starts to goes off centre ease it back on course but beware of your fingers.

And obviously to everyone except my usually intelligent DH peel the label off first

Corned beef that's very dated I thought they stopped selling that stuff years ago along with spam.

I'm impressed your DC even ate it

As for a meal it's fine tbh

@ShirleyPhallus there you go.. that qualifies as “one of those” comments I reckon.. the idea that corned beef is dated and feigned surprise that you can still buy it 🙄Well done @Splicebaked

fridaleavethetweezers · 26/07/2022 19:22

Very close to my Mum's supreme 70s tea. Corned beef, mash and sweetcorn. Please observe proper serving though. Mix mash, sweetcorn and butter. Spread on slice of corned beef, top with another slice of corned beef to make a 'sandwich' and eat whilst watching Cheggers Plays Pop.

WorkEvent · 26/07/2022 19:26

We’ve (me and DH) had a vile stomach bug today.

DCs had toasted bagels for breakfast, plain pasta and cheese for lunch, and one had a toasted bagel with ‘tomato soup’ (passata) whilst the other had leftover pasta and pesto for tea. Tbf this is basically my 4yo (very restricted diet, potential ASD)’s diet every day.

I've heard of corned beef hash but don't know how to make it. Can I have instructions please for tomorrows tea?

Crotonifolia · 26/07/2022 19:35

I bloody love a corned beef sandwich, preferably with thick white bread and salted butter. Gives you a thirst afterwards, but it's well worth the excess salt intake.

My CBA dinners generally revolve around cheese and bread, and sometimes eggs. Covers a multitude of possibilities. And the day I discovered frozen potato waffles can be cooked in the toaster was one I will never forget 😅

I make the stew kind... but basically boil some potatoes and carrots, add onions, and beef stock, season if you want, once the potatoes and carrots are soft, throw in a tin of corned beef. Serve with buttered baguette and brown sauce 😋

It's also fantastic with some beetroot on the side 👌

Thank you @User272617

I once saw an episode of “Supernanny US” where a mother put her toddler to bed with a can of spray cheese every evening as her meal. Now that is a real cba.

Oh my God, I remember this!! The little girl didn't even know how to spray the cheese on the cracker.

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 26/07/2022 19:46

My kids love for the days I say it’s help yourself tea tonight. Anything goes, the only rules are if you put it on your plate then eat it. The combinations they come up with are quite frankly ridiculous 😂

Crikeyalmighty · 26/07/2022 20:00

I've just had Jamie Oliver 1 minute in microwave black Dahl , plus I airfried2 M&S cod fish cakes and air fried a handful of cherry tomatoes. No prep needed- totally delicious!!

Nannewnannew · 26/07/2022 20:02

@Splicebaked Shock horror! They even sell corned beef in WAITROSE! Not sure about Fortnum and Mason though, haven’t been in there for donkeys years-if ever!

OP your CBA tea sounds delicious!

ReformedWaywardTeen · 26/07/2022 20:07

Wait until their teenagers and you can be so "can't be arsed" you can direct them to the cupboard and tell them to make it themselves

Bloody wonderful that one

HotMummaSummer · 26/07/2022 20:10

My 2 year old has had a small tin of beans! (Low salt and sugar ofc 😂)
I usually warm them but my husband just put them in a bowl in front of her!

Luredbyapomegranate · 26/07/2022 20:11

My mother’s CBA was a baked potato. That’s it, you had to go find your own cheese/tomato/butter.

If she was feeling a bit more at it, it was tomato patarto - tinned tomatoes, big boiled potatoes and grated cheese mixed up and done in the oven.

She did not love motherhood TBF, but it has given me a life long love of the jacket spud.

Snowpaw · 26/07/2022 20:11

Pack of cooked prawns and strawberries in our house last night.

She flipping loves it. Win win.

We're having tapas aka fridge dump on table and say 'hola' when we all sit down

I LOVE this idea!

@PaniniHead yes I'm from the SE and have never seen corned beef in any supermarket here and never known anyone to eat it here either. I'm not a weirdo recluse. I'm very sociable so it won't have passed me by plus I'm in my 50's so would have come across it being eaten here by now. None of my northern friends have ever eaten it down here either and I've known some of them for 30 years

We live in sussex and often buy corned beef so it's not a location thing. My bf loves both corned beef and spam.

NanaNelly · 26/07/2022 20:12

The tomato partato sounds nice c

Chocolatetrifle · 26/07/2022 20:15

Revisiting this thread from last night and delighted to see the corned beef talk is still continuing!

For the hash, it's lovely if you mix the boiled potatoes with chopped onion in a frying pan , then add the corned beef and some brown sauce, this was my FIL's secret ingredient. Serve with pickled red cabbage and crusty buttered baguette.

musicviking1 · 26/07/2022 20:16

After years of worrying about the children eating a healthy diet and even showing them how to rustle up quick dishes for lunch, my teens have now discovered bloody pot noddles and itsu noodles 😂

FizzyStream · 26/07/2022 20:20

My kids favourite dinner which they euphemistically call "special pasta" is what they ask for at my mums house. She once gave it them when she wasn't expecting them for dinner and didn't have much in but now they love it:

Fusilli
Butter
Black pepper
Grated cheddar

That's it. Special pasta. Unfortunately I can't make it apparently. It doesn't taste the same Angry

Dahliasandtea · 26/07/2022 20:26

My CBA dinners usually consist of jam sandwiches. It’s something I’m pretty sure my mother used to do once in a while. I thought it was a treat but now a parent myself I think it was probably a CBA dinner. And now we have adopted.

the first time I did a CBA dinner my eldest whispered to my youngest ‘our mummy is the best mummy in the world.’
i had had such a shit day I burst into tears in the kitchen and he said ‘have a jam sandwich mummy….. it makes everything feel a lot better’

so now jam sandwiches are CBA dinners and also ‘I had a shit day, and am in need of cheering up’ dinners. Which for me are basically the same thing a lot of the time.

Oh ha, this is my kids fave too! But minus the cheese. Just pasta, olive oil and salt.
And broccoli on the side!

Pliudev · 26/07/2022 20:29

Before ballet (haha) my aunty Elsie (who wasn't my aunty but every adult female you knew was called that then) used to make us crisp sandwiches. Her other speciality was salad cream sandwiches. But the crisp ones were the best and favourite 'meal' of the week as I recall.
