He's here now eating crisps. Anyone would think he's chewing through a fking concrete wall! And yyu should here the fucking racket when he's eating lettuce! I don't know who taught him to chew like that but OmFGOD I HATE IT!! . It makes me want to smash my face into a wall!
Swallowing noises too.

Anyone else hate the sound of their partner eating/swallowing?

I have found my tribe.

Also, people with wet sounding mouths shouldn't be allowed to be interviewed on the radio or on podcasts.

Omg yes I can't listen to Dr Sarah Jarvis. But I can't tell if it's because her mouth is dry or wet.

My daughter has to leave the room when my husband eats crisps fills her with rage

pastabakeonaplate · 07/11/2022 06:46

I used to get it with my dad and now my DH. It's horrendous. I swear they both eat normally! It's just me.

BruhWhy · 07/11/2022 06:50

My 12 year old has misophonia, but with the scraping of forks on plates/other cutlery and the sound of a knife cutting food. It completely enrages him. I feel sorry for his future spouse 😬

This thread has made my night! My boyfriend licks/sucks his thumb and first two fingers after every meal / snack, even if he's not touched the food with them.

I can't explain the anger I feel inside each and every time.

For goodness sake don’t marry him!

AlwaysLatte · 07/11/2022 07:03

I’ll see your DH eating and raise you The Competitive Sneezer.
My husband sounds like he's won the lottery when he sneezes. AHOOOOO!!

I am not in any way a violent person but the sound of certain people eating makes me fantasise violent endings for them.

Strangely it didn’t bother me at all with my kids until they hit the teenage years.

Misophonia is apparently heightened with peri menopause and other hormonal fluctuations. Every time I feel like this I have PMT

Deathraystare · 07/11/2022 07:07

Arrrgh!

Blokes in the cafe. Either totally eating with their mouth open or the bloke that smacks his lips together then ummm ummm. I may have to shoot them all....

Mind you, I am a tea slurper. I think because I drink it before it cools down and I eat fast. I seem to be a bit of a shovellor!

Oysterbabe · 07/11/2022 07:18

My husband eating anything crunchy 😠
He eats like a labrador, smashes it down in seconds. I swear he tries to eat crisps that loud, I refuse to believe anyone would eat that loud naturally.
Also smashing the spoon off his teeth when eating anything with a spoon.

Jerryyyyyy · 07/11/2022 07:37

My DH has this with me. It's awful. I feel so self conscious eating near him as he looks physically repulsed by me.

YukoandHiro · 07/11/2022 07:43

I don't have it but my husband eating crisps is so loud that even one of his colleagues commented on it. So if you have misphonia I can see how this would drive you WILD

It goes something like this … AAAAAACCCCCHHHHHOOOOOOOO at ear busting decibels.

He CANNOT be worse than my DP. Loud, thundering sneeze complete with dramatic look on his face, which turns red with effort. I've asked him before why tf do you sneeze like that?!

I won't be asking in future tho as last week he sneezed so hard he pulled a muscle so that's put paid to his am dram sneeze game, he sneezes carefully now. The calm lecture I gave him whilst he was howling in self-induced agony was most satisfying

😂😂😂

spaceshiptrain · 07/11/2022 07:48

For me it's about wondering why they need to make those noises. You can chew without making noise unless you have some kind of actual issue. He also smacks his lips when sucking his fingers, which you can silently, I know because I do it. So it begs the question why make the noise?

And it's the fact they're doing it on purpose that gets me.

I eat away from my husband for the most part.

BruceAndNosh · 07/11/2022 07:55

Genuine questions for misophones...
When YOU eat, what does it sound like to you?
and
Is there anyone whose eating is tolerable to you or does everyone sound disgusting no matter how quietly they eat?

Brefugee · 07/11/2022 07:58

we have got into the habit of trays on knees and watching TV while eating (DCs all gone)
I use the opportunity to listen to podcasts with headphones (sometimes just music) because the noise of anyone eating really gets on my nerves and i finally have an opportunity to cut it out. It is bliss.

fdkc · 07/11/2022 08:01

This thread is so strange to me 🤣🤣 I honestly cannot relate at all to anyone in my life. The sound of anybody eating has never bothered me, don't think I even notice. I either have a full tolerance to eating noises or everyone around me eats properly without annoying sound affects!!

IToldYouAmillionTimesAlready · 07/11/2022 08:04

I have the same problem, with my husband. He sounds like a horse with dentures when he eats an apple. He slurps his tea, scoffs food down him as though he hasn't eaten for days. We've been married for 42 years, so he's not going to change.

maddy68 · 07/11/2022 08:06

My mums chewing is so loud. I can't bear it

Workinghardeveryday · 07/11/2022 08:08

Oh my, a lot of you would actually kill my dp…

He will take a huge bite of say a burger, the make a slurping noise as if he was eating liquid. Then he sort of shakes his head back a few times I am assuming to move the food backwards in his mouth. While still chewing he will take another huge bite and loud slurp.

He has a really loud clicking jaw, so every single chew makes a really loud noise. You can hear it in another room. The whole time he eats with his mouth open and chews very loudly, talks with his mouth full also.

To top it off he eats with his knife and folk the wrong way around.

I absolutely hate meal times, it puts me off my food.

DuncanBiscuits · 07/11/2022 08:10

@Workinghardeveryday I’d have to have a word.

DuncanBiscuits · 07/11/2022 08:12

@Limosella

Jesus. Even the sentence ‘I’m going to have a snack soup’ has set me off. Wtf is a snack soup?

DCINightingale · 07/11/2022 08:14

Reading this thread whilst my DH sits opposite eating hummus on toast. Why does it sound like he is squelching through puddles with his mouth. When he eats sandwiches on the sofa it's particularly grating. It tends to be the softer things rather than crunchy.

This is me too.
My husband clacks his teeth together when he chews and it's maddening. There was one time when it seemed like he was chewing soup! How is that even possible?!?

LaMarschallin · 07/11/2022 08:35

So empathising here.
I get to listen to whimpery sex-type noises when he's eating something nice, plus the general munching/chomping/slurping when eating anything.
He tells me he actually can't close his mouth when he's chewing!?
A mouthful of coffee has to be visibly and audibly slooshed around like mouthwash before it's swallowed.
And he's got the opposite of competitive sneezing: completely ineffectual coughing!
I can hear phlegm (ugh!) In his throat and, instead of a good cough to try to shift it, he does these weedy little "Hem" noises which just seems to - audibly and soggily - shift it around.

I'm very self-conscious and careful about eating as I'd hate to make anyone feel about me like I do about them.
I don't hear myself eating particularly, but - thinking about it - I really like to read when I eat (bad manners, I know) so maybe I'm distracting myself that way.

Yep. Maybe it's something about the size of the cavities in their head resonating to a different frequency when they grow.

Misophonia is also horrible for the other person in a relationship. My husband has it and I don't enjoy food when we're eating together because I have to concentrate on eating as quickly and quietly as possible or else I have to endure a death stare or him storming off. I don't normally eat with my mouth open or anything like that, and I haven't changed the way I eat since we got together, but something flipped at some point and now he can't stand me when I'm eating, or sometimes even just breathing. Like the noise of me just existing makes the person I love want to kill me. I can see it in his eyes. It's awful.

And now I have it too. Started off that I'd get stressed if we were out together and I could hear someone eating noisily because I knew it would be stressing him out. Then that developed into getting stressed by noisy eating even if he wasn't there. And now I hate the sound of him eating too!

That’s exactly what I was thinking as I read this thread. It must make for such a horrible tense atmosphere at home, feeling that everything you do is being monitored and counted against you, and that the person who is supposed to love you is revolted by you and fantasies about killing you. I wouldn’t want to live like that.
