Fly papers - God, but I just love it when they fill up with flies.

The more stuck flies the better.

This is how it starts ......

They seemed so sweet and polite, who would.of thought it all started with a strip, of flys.

Mosquitos, what purpose do they have?

I mean you can look it up so easily but they are pollinators & they are a source of food to other important creatures in our ecosystem. We don’t know how eradicating them would affect the ecosystem - what insect would take their place, how would it change things overall?

Mosquitos, what purpose do they have?

Erm....they’re pollinators and a food for source for fish and birds.

Mosquitos, what purpose do they have?

"Mosquitoes can have both positive and negative impacts on the ecosystem. As part of their useful role, the larvae of mosquitoes live in water and provide food for fish and other wildlife, including larger larvae of other species such as dragonflies. The larvae themselves eat microscopic organic matter in the water, helping to recycle it."

What is wrong with some people!? The idea of deliberately inflicting pain on another creature is horrific to me. I have a plastic beaker with holes cut into it that I use to gather up eg flies or spiders. I slide cardboard underneath it and get them outside. If possible i shove them out of open windows. These creatures are part of our eco-culture. Do humans really think we can survive if we were the only creatures on the planet?

Zapping a fly or killing a wasp isn't what's killing our ecosystems. If you care about insects as much as you say, you'd be better off maintaining a garden (or letting it grow wild) and avoiding products that harm insects.

It's the usual MN hypocrisy. It's fine to farm and kill animals including cute little baby animals, but OP must be a psycho for killing dog-shit eating flies. Yeah, ok 🙄

Kill for food makes sense. Kill because you find it irritating is bizarre.

Shall we set up a Mumsnet Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Flies? Have a fund-raising coffee morning where we all eat lemon drizzle cake?

We in the mumsnet mafia, can incorporate that group, under our organisation.

According to World Health Organization (WHO) estimates, mosquito-borne diseases kill some 725,000 people a year. Malaria alone accounts for 600,000 of that number.

Sure, if your ok with your house being overrun with moths, for example, you can just coexist with them. Back in the real world, sometimes we have too. Also, flies are flies. They ain't going extinct anytime soon.

Sally090807 · 22/07/2022 21:20

I wonder how many of those people outraged by flies and ants being killed and worried about the eco system have cats that kill and main not to mention the environmental impact of keeping dogs too.

They estimate that cats in the UK catch up to 100 million prey items over spring and summer, of which 27 million are birds.

CallOnMe · 22/07/2022 21:23

It’s not the mosquitos killing people, it’s the pathogens they’re carrying.
The mosquitoes are just eating to stay alive.

Lions kill people.
If a lion is going to kill you then by all means kill it first.
But don’t go and kill it because you find it fun or you enjoy seeing it suffer or simply because it’s annoying you.

If you have to kill flies, mosquitoes etc then do it quickly (as regardless of what some posters claim there is a lot of evidence they do feel pain) and don’t enjoy it as that’s really sadistic.
If you do feel yourself getting off on it then maybe explore why you feel that way as there’s obviously some underlying issues.

Yes but that really has nothing to do with what I posted. I was responding to a poster who said ‘what do mosquitos do?’ That’s what they do. They’re pollinators and serve as a food source for other creatures.

But yes there does need to be better awareness and support (especially in poverty stricken areas) so that these disease numbers are lowered. However, like so so many things that need doing I don’t see that happening.

Is everyone on this thread a vegan then?! No sweet little lambs on your Sunday dinner? Nut roast all the way no doubt.

They're shit eating flies ffs. Not sure they require empathy 🤣

I am vegan actually. No lambs eaten by me, no nut roast either.

But you don’t have to be vegan to think think taking pleasure in things dying is horrible. I would hope that people that eat animal products don’t enjoy animals suffering and dying.

Flies are actually really important, maybe you should learn about the world you live in.

DoncasterHombre · 22/07/2022 21:24

Heh, I bet the same ones who shriek in terror at the sight of a spider in their house are the ones who like watching flies die. Oddballs.

I can't wait for the aliens to arrive with their "human paper" and various traps for us. I'll happily watch these dickheads struggle and wail alongside their families before they're eaten . . . . stuck on my own sheet of glue before I'm devoured myself, of course 😂

And I hope they're big, ugly, eight-legged, terrifying bastards too!

Everything has its place in the ecosystem. I don’t know what the position of flies is but I imagine that without them, spiders would rapidly decline and spiders are important for lots of reasons (not least in developing technologies for humankind based on their silk).

so yes, yabu. Personally, I can’t think of a living thing that I would celebrate the passing of.

Mosquitos, what purpose do they have?”

I don’t know Sally because , as I said, I’m not an entomologist. I suspect though that they have an important place in the ecosystem. Most living things do. Struggle to understand what the contribution of humans is these days, tbh, but I’m sure (hope) it’s something.

Bonjovispjs · 22/07/2022 21:32

You're weird.

CallOnMe · 22/07/2022 21:37

They estimate that cats in the UK catch up to 100 million prey items over spring and summer, of which 27 million are birds.

You can’t compare cats which have a natural instinct to kill with humans who (hopefully) don’t.

The cats don’t know what they’re doing it’s natural and they’re doing it for food but humans make a conscious decision before they intentionally kill something.

The issue here isn’t so much about the killing of flies etc but of the enjoying it.

RichardOsmansXRaySpecs · 22/07/2022 21:47

What is wrong with people ffs, it’s like we’re deliberately trying to make the future as bleak as possible for the future generations

If the future generations are full of kids like AliceMcK's DD then fucking good!!!!

Fraidwo1 · 22/07/2022 21:50

This thread is golden.

If flies are so worthy to be considered of sanctity of life then what would you do if you accidentally got maggots in your food bins? THOSE ARE THE BABIES OF THE FLIES! Please tell me you release them into the garden?

@NotMushroomInEre Yes, I realise the spiders eat flies, which is why I’m more fond of them. However, when one crawls over my face while I’m out camping it is my instinct to destroy it. Feel free to speak to your therapist after this.

NotMushroomInEre · 22/07/2022 22:05

@Fraidwo1 allowing an insect to do what an insect does justifies a therapist? 'When one crawls over my face while I’m out camping it is my instinct to destroy it'. It's not me that needs the therapist.

Fraidwo1 · 22/07/2022 22:12

@NotMushroomInEre lacking a bit in the humour department aren’t you?

NotMushroomInEre · 22/07/2022 22:18

@Fraidwo1 yep, I absolutely lack humour when it comes to people joking about therapy and turning therapy into a joke. It is almost akin to watching insects die and taking pleasure from it iyswim.
