To enjoy watching them die?

Fly papers - God, but I just love it when they fill up with flies.

The more stuck flies the better.

YABU - and probably a psychopath
YANBU - DIE FLY DIE

Is everyone on this thread a vegan then?! No sweet little lambs on your Sunday dinner? Nut roast all the way no doubt.

They're shit eating flies ffs. Not sure they require empathy 🤣

NotMushroomInEre · 22/07/2022 20:03

I think it's weird to enjoy watching anything die. I remember squirting a wasp with fly spray. It started to bend and twist in the most horrible ways, and it looked like it was trying to sting itself in the head. I scooped it up with a dust pan and brush, took it outside and stood on it. I felt awful, and have never used fly spray since. I don't get any enjoyment from watching any living thing die.

I count how many clothes moths I have on my sticky clothes moths traps. I’m always amazed at how many there are. I compare how many are caught in different locations. If they left my cashmere jumpers alone I might be more inclined to love them.

Oh - I do this too! It’s constant conflict between moths and wool jackets. It’s war.

@SexyLittleNosferatu yes, I'm vegan, and I think your point is bang on.

Myself and my DCs have all had nasty ant bites recently. Tonight as I was walking into the house I had an ant crawling on me, I went to slap it but knocked it to the ground, I just happened to have a bloody great big mallet in my hand so whacked the little fucker. My 10yo was like wooo that’s awesome, can I do it, so I handed her the mallet and sent her off to the garden, she’s been happily whacking the little shits for half an hour,

thispooshallpass · 22/07/2022 20:09

I will kill slugs and (clothes) moths. Guess I lack basic empathy etc. Whatever.

Would never harm snails, ants, butterflies, beetles and the rest and always take care to move them if I'm gardening.

I wonder where you draw the line between which insects/birds/small animals/fish you enjoy catching and watching them die and those you wouldn't?

Thatswhyimacat · 22/07/2022 20:11

There is a big difference between getting rid of pests such as moth infestations which can't really be caught and released, and delighting in death.

thispooshallpass · 22/07/2022 20:12

We also had a bee stuck in our house and gave him some honey to perk up. Some insects we should care about but people are really pretending to be bothered by a fly. A fly.

SexyLittleNosferatu · 22/07/2022 20:12

It's the usual MN hypocrisy. It's fine to farm and kill animals including cute little baby animals, but OP must be a psycho for killing dog-shit eating flies. Yeah, ok 🙄

ihavenocats · 22/07/2022 20:13

Honestly I think even having a strip of paper with flies stuck to it on display in your home is weird let alone enjoying any part of it.

Insects don't feel pain so not the same.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 22/07/2022 20:14

Fly papers are cruel, but tie a spider on the end of a stick and poke it at flies is a much more natural way of a fly meeting it's maker - than paper.

Kanaloa · 22/07/2022 20:16

I don’t enjoy it. I could see getting a sort of relief if you had some sort of awful bug infestation that they were finally gone, but for just regular houseflies I don’t get any pleasure out of killing them.

If you get a lot of them have you taken precautions/measures? Like making sure the place is always clean/never any old food or anything they could be attracted to?

EarringsandLipstick · 22/07/2022 20:17

Horrible.

And fly papers are just 🤮 thought they were a thing of my childhood past tbh

They will be back and bringing their big brothers. Have you nver seen the film "Them"?

I mean lots of us might not be meat eaters - I’m not! But I don’t think it’s the killing flies, it’s more the enjoyment I would find a bit weird.

As an aside, I’m not sure why people would think there are ‘some bugs we have to care about, but flies?’ They may not be cute or whatever but they have their place like any other creature. It’s not as if only the cute ones or the ones we find palatable as they’re useful are important to the world overall.

Fucking Hell. I hope you're joking.

RaininSummer · 22/07/2022 20:19

The flypaper enjoyment is pretty nasty in my mind. If the ant and mallet start is true I think that is an absolutely awful thing to encourage your child to do. I am quite close to the spider in a stick as I found a medium size Spidey in my kitchen earlier. He had a magnificent web. Told him/her that they can stay if the promise to eat lots of flies.

SanFairyAnnie · 22/07/2022 20:20

sorry that was meant for the ant killers

heyitsthistle · 22/07/2022 20:21

When I was younger I used to trap flies under a glass and release them into an electric fly zapper.

Zip zip zap pop. Very satisfying!

(And no, I'm not a weird psychopath)

Fraidwo1 · 22/07/2022 20:24

I stamp on spiders. I feel a bit ashamed afterwards. I hate flies even more. I don’t feel bad about killing them but I don’t really enjoy it .

sqirrelfriends · 22/07/2022 20:25

I quite enjoy spearing slugs, I hate the fuckers and I feel a sense of satisfaction knowing that that particular slug won’t be eating my lovingly tended plants. I guess that means I’m a psychopath.

If it helps, animals that lack a cerebral cortex don’t feel pain, at least not like we do. It’s more likely a signal saying something is wrong.
