To think if you borrow something you should return it?

justawoman93 · 21/07/2022 08:02

Me and DH lent out a piece of equipment that cost us £100 to what I thought was a good friend.
The other day DH needed it to do a job, reliezed friend hadn't returned it. So I messaged her asking for it back to be told she had sold it saying she thought it was hers and didn't relieze it was our item. (She knew full well it was a loan I have texts of her asking to borrow it)

She hasn't offered the money for said item and simply starting complaining she's skint and has no money (don't we all right now)

AIBU to be very pissed off? I'm not even sure I want to remain friends with her now as she clearly doesn't respect our friendship enough or am I being a bit over the top?

I'm really disappointed as I don't usually lend out things unless I can trust said person and she's completely broken my trust but on the other hand she is going through a bit of a rough time right now so I feel guilty for being angry. We can't afford to replace the piece of equipment that's been sold either so now the job will have to wait a couple of months which again is something that needed to be done quite quickly. AngrySad

Are you serious??

Acronymsandinitialisms · 21/07/2022 20:21

Please go to small claims. It's hassle and it's £35 but this friendship is dead and at least you'll get some of your money back.

RachandO · 21/07/2022 20:43

What a CF!
Everyone (apart from one troll) agrees with you that she's totally out of order selling your property.
PLEASE DO NOT let this person get away with it. Scum like this will carry on causing nice people like yourself misery.
With regards to the small claims court, you have evidence that she asked to borrow it. You would win this. The CF would have to pay you the cost of the court plus the value of your property. I've had to do this and trust me it's bloody fantastic making people take responsibility for their bad behaviour. Please don't let her get away with it. We're all on your side 💐

A580Hojas · 21/07/2022 21:04

Of course I'm not a troll.

Don't post in AIBU if there is only one answer. AIBU is for polling for opinions on whether you are being unreasonable or not. It's for when there are two sides to a story and you're a bit unsure. Not 100% validation of your outrage.

You might as well say "AIBU to think the sun doesn't come up every day".

Or the ubiquitous "AIBU to ask what you're having for dinner?", "AIBU to ask which is your favourite name out of these 2", "AIBU to wear a pair of jeans?", "AIBU to think dog shit on the pavement is disgusting?".

Not AIBU questions.

LovelyLisa2 · 21/07/2022 21:20

Completely unacceptable. Make her pay x

In what bloody world is it fine to sell something you borrowed from a friend!?!

ThistleTits · 21/07/2022 21:59

She didn't think it was hers after 3 weeks, she knew exactly what she was doing. I don't think she's a friend at all.

Insanelysilver · 21/07/2022 22:38

Your friend has borrowed your item and knowingly sold something that isn’t hers.
She’s a thief without a doubt.
Tell her you want the full cost of the item and give her a time in which to do it otherwise you’ll take her to the small claims court.
i honestly can’t believe she’d have the nerve to do this and turn attempt to brazen it out by claiming not to remember she’d borrowed it from you.
Has she got amnesia or what ?! Thieving mare!

Op discovered after 3 wks her friend had sold it. She probably sold it the first week..

SleepingAgent · 21/07/2022 22:55

I would have to do Small Claims just to assuage my rage! What an absolute cunt she is.

Fluffmum · 21/07/2022 23:17

How rude and presumptuous. I’m sorry but she should pay

Cattenberg · 21/07/2022 23:21

Like several PPs, I would take this to the Small Claims Court. I’m not an expert on this, but it sounds likely that you’d get most or all of your money back. Also, she might think twice about doing this to the next person.

I think CFs see kindness as weakness, so they tend to keep on going unless people stand up to them.

MightbeMaybe · 21/07/2022 23:35

Text her and tell her you'll be getting the police involved and if they don't do anything you'll be taking her to small claims for the value of the item and the subsequent fees

Trudij123 · 21/07/2022 23:35

I’m another vote for small claims - you’ll win and ALL the costs will be hers. You’ll probably get it back at £5 a month or something, but you’ll also get the satisfaction of knowing you’ve sent her a very clear message.

what a b

MightbeMaybe · 21/07/2022 23:36

*if she doesn't repay you within 24hrs.

Pressed send too early

Buggersticks · 21/07/2022 23:38

Ohhh, I wouldn't be able to let this drop with her. No one borrows anything for 3 weeks and manages to sell it believing it to be theirs...3 years possibly, not 3 weeks. I hope you get something back (money or replacement) xx

cherish123 · 22/07/2022 00:28

YANBU
it's very dishonest to sell something that belongs to someone else that you have lent them. She clearly knew this.

If you had given it to her, it's not right for to sell it for a profit.

OMG! I'm so thankful you've returned to explain your reasoning. All the quotes of your response by PPs taking it seriously were driving me to fucking distraction!!😆

I'm astounded at how gullible so many people are.

CactusBlossom · 22/07/2022 03:07

YANBU!!! She sold it after three weeks!?! If it had been 18 months it is possible that might have forgotten it was yours (at a very generous stretch). It sounds like she "borrowed" it with the intention of selling it. She didn't even ask you if you wanted it back. That's not the action of a friend. I think you should ask for it to be returned (if she can get it back - doubtful), replaced, or she should give you the money. She's not what I would call a friend.

Krabapple · 22/07/2022 04:49

justawoman93 · 21/07/2022 16:30

Just another update... I went round to hers and knocked. Her DC were at the window so I knew she was in.
She refused to answer the door so instead of kicking off in front of her DC as it's not their fault their mum is a thieving CF.
I texted her and told her that I want nothing more to do with her that it's no surprise people are dropping her like flies with an attitude oh poor me me me and she can shove the piece of equipment she "BORROWED" where the sun don't shine.

Not very mature of me I know but I'm still furious.

I think I would be tempted to tell her you will be reporting it to the police if she doesn’t replace the item. You don’t have to go through with it but I would threaten it.

Avoid bluffing. If you say you are prepared to do something, mean it.

I am in the minority though on this thread and, despite thinking the friend” has behaved appallingly, not a chance I would involve the police. For two reasons, firstly, I would not want to waste police time on this matter. If you report anything they are required to do a ridiculous amount of paperwork. Secondly, even though the friend has undoubtedly behaved atrociously, on the basis that she has been a friend for many years, a “good” friend in fact, and never previously stole from me or done anything like this, no, I would not report.

So you’re saying stealing is ok with you and you’d happily do the same?
Does that stop at stealing from friends or would you take it straight off the shop shelf to get the job done?
