To wonder why people get long talon nails?

I'm fascinated by the super long, talon-like false nails. Especially the square shaped and the really pointy ones. I thought it would be a short lived statement trend but it's lasted for years now.

Curious about what people like about them? Why do you think they've been so enduring?

I remember queueing on a very hot day for over an over for my Covid jab out in the sun. When you got to the front of the queue it became apparent that the slowest factor was the woman taking details and trying to type them into a tablet. Except she couldn't type because of her bloody nails. Took her about 10 attempts to type my name in. I wanted to take it off her and do it myself. There were loads of nurses ready and waiting to inject but we had to get past the incompetent gate keeper first

These are mine and I love them. I can easily wipe my bum, wash dishes, work ect. Better than some without nails 🙂
Each to their own, I like them, and I don't judge others on what they like 👍

Mine are shorter than the white bits of yours and I still admit they cause me problems at times. Surely they cause you some?

megletthesecond · 19/07/2022 23:08

I'd love ultra long Cardi B nails just for a weekend. Although I'm not sure how I'd get my contacts in or out....

How do you get your keys out of your pocket and open the front door? How do you wipe your arse? Pick your nose. Change a tampon / cup? Put on eyeliner.
So many questions.

I have all these questions too, as well as how do you chop up food eg onions/carrots?
We need someone with super long nails to do an AMA

Obviously it's horses for courses, I like tattoos and blue hair.

For me its the practicality of them, without being too crude, when I wipe, (with tissue Obviously) I kind of scoop fingers to get a good clean (there is no way to write that and not sound like the poo troll sorry) but you can't do that with very long nails

DangerouslyBored · 19/07/2022 23:13

They are v dated, tacky and unhygienic.

Other than these issues, they are great 🤮

MyBushOrYours · 19/07/2022 23:15

Like stilettos, they just seem dated, pointless and mostly bad for the environment.

HelloBunny · 19/07/2022 23:16

Always have short nails as mine are thin & weak, paper-like. Once they get to fingertip length they break off or peek away.
Never had fake nails, gels or even a manicure. Haven’t used nail polish in years, as it dries them out & makes them worse.

NewNamePrivacyneeded · 19/07/2022 23:18

I wonder why people but fillers in their face - the duck pout has lasted a long time too. At least the nails cam be quickly filed but the over filled lips. So many young women look like clones.

EV117 · 19/07/2022 23:18

Each to their own of course - I’m a firm believer that people should look how they like - but I also have my opinions and yeah personally I don’t see the appeal, I think they do look a bit clownish. It just goes too far for me. False lashes are pretty, but you wouldn’t have them reaching the top of your forehead. It reminds me of when lip fillers are over done.
A colleague at work has them and her typing on a keyboard is like nails on a chalk board.

Wow. I feel sure if I had nails that long they would get in the way of so many things, but I assume you get used to it. I feel I would gouge my eye out if I tried to put contacts in and I would worry it would hurt inserting San pro Blush
....and that I'd end up chopping off my nails and adding them with the onion to a spag bol!

GrumpyPanda · 19/07/2022 22:30

Mine have always been as short as possible. I do martial arts for one thing, and any type of longish and/or sharp nails are a complete no-no - had my hand ripped open once on somebody's unfiled toenail just to illustrate. But also hate the feeling whenever they grow a bit longer - too painful when they get bent, too easy to splinter. Maybe other women have ultra strong nails?

Ah your comment just made me shiver - I did a martial art for a decade, definitely didn't have long nails then but did once see someone new to classes break their nail during training and drop to the ground like she'd been shot, so yep, I can see why you wouldn't want them longer!

My natural nails are quite weak (I mustn't drink enough milk or something), but I have stumpy little fingers, so I like a little bit of length - nowhere near as long as some posters here are imagining, I think! - and gel keeps them the length I like with strength to avoid that stomach-churning 'bendy nail' feeling.

MyMigraineAndMe · 19/07/2022 23:21

I’m certainly not a fan of how they look, but I bet swooshing their hands about and emphatically clicking the acrylic together adds some spice to conversations Grin

TooBigForMyBoots · 19/07/2022 23:36

liveforsummer · 19/07/2022 22:30

Why would anyone ssume women with long nails don't do these things?

Because it's really sore when even my short ones are growing out a bit and a horse rips a rope out your hand and catches it, or you pick up a 20 kilo feed bag slightly wrong or you have to wrestle with a panicking sheep who's horns are caught in mesh (todays delight - loose nail now - v sore)

Mine are weak and crap too. My sister, the farmer however can remove a screw with hers and suffers fewer broken nails than me.

Her nails are always beautiful. Mine are shite.😭

OnaBegonia · 19/07/2022 23:40

Unemployed nails. Filthy 🤢
Really? what utter snobbery.

Mothapples · 19/07/2022 23:45

I'm sure there are lots of lovely women who have these, but yes, I do judge. To me it's like foot binding, making a body part less functional as some sort of status symbol. It seems gullible to spend money to so massively inconvenience yourself, slave to fashion. To me it's a bit like people who wear clothing with the brand name plastered all over it, like they're trying to appear well-off and well-groomed but it just comes across vulgar.

shas19 · 19/07/2022 23:52

are some of you actually being serious??? I'd imagine I have 'talons' to you all but some how I can wipe my arse, my childrens, clean the whole house daily, open canned drinks etc and even put in a tampon with them🤣😬you get used to them like any other thing

OnaBegonia · 19/07/2022 23:53

@Mothapples
There are HCP, teachers, graduates with these nails, are they vulgar?
To have such a strong opinion on fake nails is very odd.
Same applies to the PP who said it equates to intelligence level.
MNs snobs at their best tonight.

Or better still a video. 😂

Mine are weak and crap too. They can break over night in bed. I never had them done as I assumed it would be a waste of money as they’d break before I left the shop. Then I was going to a wedding so I had them done. It revolutionised my life. I knew nothing about techniques available so told the nail technician to do them so they wouldn’t break. She did and I’ve never had a broken nail since. I keep them short as I prefer them that way. I’ve just started having ‘Build a Gel’ on them which is great. I get a lot of pleasure from having nice nails and wish I’d realised earlier they could be sorted.

I wouldn't be able to wear my gardening gloves properly with those. Way too impractical for me!

Are her nails fake though? Mine are very short acrylics and they'd be too fat to fit in a screw gap. I have to find some sort of utensil.

Always a little jealous of length like yours, I keep mine about here but I love your set

I am intruiged as to what other posters count as too long though? What's the acceptable length if getting acrylics?

No to HCP. Someone scrubbed into theatre is not going to have talon like nails.

Mothapples · 19/07/2022 23:57

I take everyone as I find them, but that's my immediate response when seeing them. I also think men wouldn't waste their money on such a disabling and ridiculous bodily enhancement and feel it's a shame women do, but it's there money I guess.

OnaBegonia · 19/07/2022 23:59

@XenoBitch
There are other roles in HC than theatre nurse/surgeon etc
My point is not to judge so much, similar on the tattoo hating threads, lots of professionals have them, it's just nasty snobbery.
