To wonder why people get long talon nails?

I'm fascinated by the super long, talon-like false nails. Especially the square shaped and the really pointy ones. I thought it would be a short lived statement trend but it's lasted for years now.

Curious about what people like about them? Why do you think they've been so enduring?

I have semi long, natural nails. I don't let them get too long as they get in the way of typing fast. I think with super long nails like you've described they type with the nail and not finger tips. With natural nails I find that causes discomfort and is a good sign they need to be shortened a tad.

I love longer nails as I do nail art on mine every weekend. They look lovely for work and it's really fun. The longer the nail, the more surface to do art on. Mine are usually around this length - as I said, longer but not super long (not my nails but I've done that pattern and it looked so good). I prefer them more rounded so I don't scratch myself on the edges.

They are not to my taste and to be honest I always wonder what lingers on the underside of them that handwashing alone does not get rid of. I have short nails and get shocked looks if I use a nail brush at the sink in a restroom in shopping centre etc so guessing a lot of people don't

Why are people so bothered about the legnth of someone else's nails 🤣
I always get long and I can't think of one single thing they stop me from doing.

They would stop you having any sort of care/nurse/HCP role.

RaininSummer · 19/07/2022 22:22

I find them vile and yes to Nosferatu. Had students who couldn't take their exams until the silly things were removed as they couldn't use the computer keyboard unless stabbing it with a pen

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 19/07/2022 22:23

I tried it a few times with gel rather than acrylic. They were really good for squeezing blackheads 😀

I keep my nails short-ish and unpainted (I'm a cook) and I'm constantly appalled by how much crud collects under them, even during the night! I'm always on the hunt for the perfect nail brush if anyone has a recommendation??

God knows what's collecting under painted fake nails!

Dc have ponies so I spend a lot of time doing the dirty work. Since I've been getting my nails done (albeit short otherwise would be totally impractical) they are miraculously always clean 😁 (I also dread to think what's under there lol)

thefamous5 · 19/07/2022 22:24

I have long nails - currently oval shape but usually coffin shaped.

I have four kids, run a business, do housework and manage to wipe my bum and do everything that needs to be done.

handbagsandholidays · 19/07/2022 22:25

Nope yanbu. I'm not a fan and can't understand how they can be kept hygienic. Each to their own but that trend is definitely not for me!

thefamous5 · 19/07/2022 22:27

I also keep them clean...it's really not hard. Soap and water when our, soap, water and nail brush at home - exactly as I did before I started getting acrylics

TwoMonthsOff · 19/07/2022 22:27

I was watching DNA detectives the other night
they found a skeleton (in Florida) with rings one and ‘distinctive’ acrylic nails still attached (was so sad actually)
so it just made me feel really unsettled that they were still attached and they had them as exhibits in a bag
they were a help in identifying victim

but it just made me feel so upset and creepy

Neverendingdust · 19/07/2022 22:29

They’re disgusting - especially whenever you see a picture of said lady holding something (Facebook MP usually) and the dirty underside is visible 🤮🤢 grim

liveforsummer · 19/07/2022 22:30

Why would anyone ssume women with long nails don't do these things?

Because it's really sore when even my short ones are growing out a bit and a horse rips a rope out your hand and catches it, or you pick up a 20 kilo feed bag slightly wrong or you have to wrestle with a panicking sheep who's horns are caught in mesh (todays delight - loose nail now - v sore)

I'm fascinated by the responses here. Do you all genuinely think nobody with long nails wipes their own arse, changes tampons, can get keys out of pockets, etc, and we are all just high maintenance weirdos who do literally no normal things for ourselves?

Do none of you have nails past the end of your fingertips, or what? Cos otherwise... it's only as unhygenic as if they were a millimetre or two past the end of your fingers. You just wash your hands and clean under your nails as you would anyway!

Mine have always been as short as possible. I do martial arts for one thing, and any type of longish and/or sharp nails are a complete no-no - had my hand ripped open once on somebody's unfiled toenail just to illustrate. But also hate the feeling whenever they grow a bit longer - too painful when they get bent, too easy to splinter. Maybe other women have ultra strong nails?

ladydimitrescu · 19/07/2022 22:31

Tiani4 · 19/07/2022 21:36

They don't

If someone gets crazy long nails they aren't planning to do any washing up nor cleaning up after themselves

I'm not enamoured of the "I can't as I have long nails" excuse

Serious high maintenance Lazy excuse as ... (grumble grumble about lazy people)

I have long nails - I do all the housework, look after my kids and run my own business, with no issues. Long nails don't mean you're lazy - what a weird assumption.

coffeecupsandfairylights · 19/07/2022 22:31

I can't stand them. They'd be totally impractical for me anyway as I work with animals.

When I was in primary school, the mum of one of my friends had them so long they curled underneath. They both fascinated and horrified me in equal measure Grin

BotterMon · 19/07/2022 22:32

They're very tacky. Can you imagine a doctor coming to examine you with pointy talons?

Nat6999 · 19/07/2022 22:33

I don't know how they manage, I have mine probably 7.5mm off the end of my fingers & the number of times I knock them, they hurt so much it makes me eyes water.

SpaceJamtart · 19/07/2022 22:36

I've only had them when asked to as a bridesmaid, it was fine- you just use your knuckles insted of fingertips for stuff like getting your card out of the ATM and I washed my hands and nails the normal amount and they never looked dirty. Took extra care while washing them to make sure.

Honestly a bit confused how you guys are wiping your arses if your fingernails are getting involved

Celia24 · 19/07/2022 22:38

Last time I encountered then was at the chip shop. The girl tried and failed multiple times to wrap the chips.

She doesn't work there anymore but I doubt that's the reason 😁

XenoBitch · 19/07/2022 22:20

Not true. The very lovely, very competent and capable carers of my NDN have long acrylics. And hair extensions.Shock

Anyway @Froglett10 YABU for inviting arseholes, idiots and those with low esteem to sneer at those they deem beneath them.Hmm

Because of millimetres difference in nail length.😂😂😂

Badger1970 · 19/07/2022 22:45

They're utterly revolting. We had a rep in the other day at work, and the clacking of them on her iPad nearly made me heave.

As for when people need them infilling and there's half a mile between the nail and nail bed..... shudders.

Tinktravels · 19/07/2022 22:54

@XenoBitch

I said I can't think of a single thing they stop me doing. Which is true.
I'm a supply teacher and a dance teacher.
Never stop me doing any of my everyday tasks or anything at work.

Kimalexandra · 19/07/2022 22:54

These are mine and I love them. I can easily wipe my bum, wash dishes, work ect. Better than some without nails 🙂
Each to their own, I like them, and I don't judge others on what they like 👍

I’m afraid I’m judgy. Inversely proportional to intellect is what they say to me.
