To wonder why people get long talon nails?

I'm fascinated by the super long, talon-like false nails. Especially the square shaped and the really pointy ones. I thought it would be a short lived statement trend but it's lasted for years now.

Curious about what people like about them? Why do you think they've been so enduring?

At least my arsehole ex was open about his real thoughts on the subject once he decided to let his true nature out shortly after DD was born.

Long nails = dirty whores
Any colour nail varnish except palest pink = dirty whores
False nails = filthy dirty whores
Long false nails with nail art or bright colours = filthy dirty whores and black women

One of the first things I did after he finally fucked off was get regular manicures, nails and pedicures. Oh, and I bought sandals (as wearing those was also on a par with the long false nails with nail art, apparently), got my hair done however I wanted and bought tons of jewellery and handbags. All of these were inextricably linked with racist notions in his head.

He'd get on really well with a lot of posters on this thread.

Well done for getting rid, @NeverDropYourMooncup - I hope you now have very long, bright painted nails. Maybe with diamanté bits!

😮 Well done for leaving.

My ex regular nail lady sold her Mercedes and move back to Poland into her 6 bedroom home she had built designed to her taste from the money she made.

She had arms to die for all that buffing she was a perfectionist who sold her client book it was that hot.

I miss her.

Yeah. But try not to be a judgey cow just because he was. Anyone who doesn't like talon nails is more or less a racist misogynist? Bollocks.

How absolutely horrible of you. And for what it’s worth starting sneery threads to all jump in and call people stupid/dirty because they have different nails to you does smack of misogyny. And considering these trends that are sneered at are so so so often associated with those from certain cultures it also has a hint of racism.

It's worth nothing because I did no such thing, but hey. I'm horrible, sure. 🙄 People seem very invested in a bloody fashion trend

Yep, invested enough to start a thread and say nasty things about them. And it’s not about what just you have said - feel free to read over the thread and you’ll see plenty of posts insinuating the things I’ve mentioned.

Nah, I'll stick with being a judgey cow, thanks. I prefer my side of judgey cows to yours, as I'm not calling women dirty, lazy, stupid, incompetent and unclean, assuming they've got shit all over their arses and fingers because they like having their nails done.

You enjoy your position of perceived moral superiority over there with a man who once said if he ever saw my feet in sandals with varnish on my toes, he'd take a club hammer and smash my toes to a pulp because (and I'm directly quoting here) 'No middleclass woman looks like that'.

lenorofavenor · 22/07/2022 07:51

People can have their opinions on nails and it doesn't have to be that deep. We all get judged for everything. Some of the comments were a bit harsh but we are talking about plastic. Stuck on your fingers. It is not your actual body.

And it doesn't imply support for a domestic abused either.

This is an anonymous forum where people give their opinions, just forget about it, it doesn't matter whatsoever.

He sounds awful and hopefully you are free of him now.

I still don't like long nails.

I have long hair and I'm in my 50s. If I had a pound for every time someone said women over 40 shouldn't have long hair, I'd be on holiday in the Med right now instead of gearing up for work at my dining room table.

I am fat too - the disapproval I get over that is literally all around me.

I have a toilet brush and carpets and let people wear shoes in my house.

My dc names are two of the commonest you could imagine - literally top 2 or 3 of the lists some years.

All of these I have been judged on Mumsnet for. But actually I don't think judged, as in my moral compass or values have been questioned, just some people passing their opinion. Thank God I don't get worked up into a frenzy over things that just DON'T MATTER!

The issue is if you’re opinion on nails is that people who get them are stupid and dirty, and that those things are intrinsically linked to being poor/working class, it is that deep. It’s not really about the nails, it’s about a deeply sad societal problem of classism, racism, and constant judgment of women by other women. Much like how the veiled sneery comments on threads about Irish names being ‘naughty boys names’ isn’t really about someone who dislikes the name Connor.

Kanaloa · 22/07/2022 08:16

*your, not you’re I meant! But yes, the problem is that the opinion is indicative of deeper issues. Of course if it’s ‘I’m not keen, I don’t get them’ that’s one thing but ‘they must be dirty and stupid’ or ‘they’re disgusting and chavvy’ then that’s an issue.

Idontknowwhattothink · 22/07/2022 08:25

I think they are repulsively ugly and unflattering to how hands look.

Who cares though? Personal style is personal obviously.

Onlyforcake · 22/07/2022 08:30

If you do something to deliberately hamper your functionality then it's definitely reflective of your attitude to life. Lots of people do things to prevent their body working well though. I guess it's often down to self.worth one way or another.

Shoxfordian · 22/07/2022 08:34

Plenty of people on here have said it doesn’t hamper their functionality though so what’s your point?

Please say this is a wind up and not an actual, genuine point of view. Peak MN has been reached. 😂
Perhaps not listening to others who say it doesn't stop them doing day to day things, and thinking they must have a problem with self worth, says more about the person who jumps to those conclusions.

It screams ‘high maintenance’ to me
