To wonder why people get long talon nails?

I'm fascinated by the super long, talon-like false nails. Especially the square shaped and the really pointy ones. I thought it would be a short lived statement trend but it's lasted for years now.

Curious about what people like about them? Why do you think they've been so enduring?

They’re not my cup of tea but! I have had them when the wonderful bride chose our nails. Within a few hours I’d gotten used to using my fingers to do things below the nail, the nails just sort of go over the top of whatever you’re trying to do. It’s really not difficult and I would imagine most people who have them manage daily so you sound a bit ridiculous tbh!

a girl at work had them and she was very, very loud on the keyboard! I think she did her own head in cos she only had them the once.

HRTQueen · 20/07/2022 01:21

They get them because they like them and they adapt of course then can and so do housework, clean themselves, their children

I love fancy nails I have gel nails and have a little diamond on one I love it

StClare101 · 20/07/2022 03:18

I think they look cheap and nasty, not to mention dirty. Blergh.

Binkybix · 20/07/2022 04:11

I’m not a massive fan of the long thick fake looking ones but can appreciate a bit of nail art.

One thing that puts me off is that apparently many salons are part of modern slavery and the chemicals pose a risk to health of the workers, and not sure how you know which are legit and which aren’t?

Bednobsbroomsticks · 20/07/2022 05:39

Long nails make me shudder. I'm same as pp. Mine have to be short clean and clear nail varnish. People with long nails always like to over expose their hands too which gets annoying.

Mothapples · 20/07/2022 06:05

What's so feminist about slagging women off because they wear their nails longer @Mothapples? They are perfectly capable, if they weren't they'd cut them.
I'm not slagging off other women, although others have slagged me off on here for my opinion by making personal attacks. As I've already said, I take everyone as I find them and all that matters to me is how people behave. However it's a fact of life that the way you present yourself informs others about who you are, at least for a first impression, and this is what these nails say to me. I agree with others about the modern slavery and environmental damage too, I don't understand why anyone would want to go to a nail bar and pay money sit around for ages having chemicals plastered all over your healthy nails by someone who might be being exploited, all for a fashion to make them look like - who? Cardi B? Not someone I aspire to being.

So many judgemental comments on here

I have acrylics done every three weeks

I can confirm that I have a law degree, don’t have black dyed hair, am perfectly capable of doing household jobs, can wipe my bum and put my contacts in every day 🙄

There’s nothing feminist about judging other women for their choices

My ex-colleague had long talon nails with painted flowers and tiny gemstones on. I was fascinated. I couldn't understand how she could function as a normal human

The answer was, we were totally different. She ate out, had a cleaner, didn't cook beyond making toast, had no small children, had an office job that involved typing, being on the phone etc. but nothing physical.
I garden, cook, clean, sand down woodwork, mow the lawn, build trade show stands, 😀If I had nails like that, they would last about an hour.

Mine are normally a clean basic French polish and I wear rings if I want to add some sparkle. Each to their own.

Maireas · 20/07/2022 06:33

@Shoxfordian - those are a work of art. I love the Art Deco vibe. I'd never have them myself but they do look stunning. Plenty of students where I teach have them - often in yr8 or yr9, and loads in yr10 upwards, it's definitely a thing.
The pointed ones are very fashionable - they look fierce!

Maireas · 20/07/2022 06:36

toomuchlaundry · 20/07/2022 00:46

So how does someone with such long nails put in and take out contact lenses 😱

I think because you do it with the pad of your finger, not the tip. You can bend the finger slightly backwards.

Herejustforthisone · 20/07/2022 06:37

They absolutely fuck your real nails. For life, sometimes.

I am nauseated by them. I have an acquaintance who gets them and is also ‘fastidious’ in cleaning them, but they still accumulate orange crud under them as time goes on. It makes me feel very ill to see.

Shoxfordian · 20/07/2022 06:38

Thank you @Maireas 😄

I change between square and oval nails depending on the design; those ones were a few designs ago, current ones are a bit shorter although not short

I just like my nails always looking good (to me anyway) and knowing I don’t have to paint them myself (always flakes and looks messy) and they’re all a good length

Shoxfordian · 20/07/2022 06:39

Yep re lens, you use the pad of your finger

I have no issues but then I’ve been wearing lens over 20 years

There’s nothing feminist about judging other women for their choices
There's nothing feminist about following expensive fashions that prevent bodily mobility, harm the environment and treat ethnic minority women as subservient and possibly use them as slaves. Feminism doesn't mean you can't ever criticize what other women do. If a woman chose to sell other women into slavery, start a war or murder her children, am I allowed to criticize that woman or is everything any woman ever does exempt from criticism because of feminism? Everyone judges on appearance initially, I'd judge a man with a shark tooth necklace or wearing a sarong in a different way, how you present yourself gives information to others. You might not like how I present myself, I couldn't care less because it's how I want to look, presumably you like the nails so why should you care what anyone else thinks.

Why do they have to be so long though? You might be able to manage, but it makes life so difficult. Why not have them shorter? By about a third?

I might be clouded because I think nails that long and thick look so incredibly fake (maybe that doesn’t matter?) and the way they sit so proud of the natural nail bed looks insane.

Herejustforthisone · 20/07/2022 06:45

Do you still work in law @Shoxfordian ?

daisyjgrey · 20/07/2022 06:52

How about, as adults, we all stop making threads about why people get false nails/tattoos/certain haircuts/wear heels etc.

The answer is and always will be "because they can and they want to and it's absolutely none of your business".

Using words like "disgusting" and "repulsive" when it comes to people just minding their own business, looking the way they want to look, is epically shit behaviour.

Shoxfordian · 20/07/2022 06:57

I'm in a related area working within information governance @Herejustforthisone

I don’t have my nails done because I want to follow fashion or look like Cardi B (nothing wrong with her though), it’s because I personally like how they look

My nails don’t prevent bodily mobility at all - I can do everything with or without acrylics

How does it harm the environment? I mean maybe it does using the chemicals but we all make less than eco friendly choices at times. I don’t drive so maybe that offsets my acrylics - who knows?!

I’m also not treating anyone as subservient or a slave! I go to a family run business, been there since the 90s, and I pay them (obviously)

Mothapples · 20/07/2022 07:08

Choices aren't made in a vacuum, these nails weren't around 50 years ago and aren't worn in other parts of the world, so it's not just that you like how they look, your preference is culturally influenced, as it is for all of us. Extra long and colourful nails get attention because they stand out. If I want to stand out in any way, it's personally not for something quite so revolting and facile as brightly coloured plastic stuck on the end of my fingers.

Also, I use my hands a lot in my daily life and work, they would definitely prevent me from doing what I need to do each day.

phishy · 20/07/2022 07:09

bellac11 · 19/07/2022 21:48

No, Im fastidious about my nails being really short, they are never longer than the end of my actual finger. I feel sick if I see them any longer.

That sounds dull AF.

Shoxfordian · 20/07/2022 07:14

There’s no need to make personal comments though saying these nails look revolting or facile

I didn’t say short stubby bitten nails look disgusting even if I don’t personally like them

There’s no need to judge other people like this

phishy · 20/07/2022 07:15

I’m sure you do things that others find ‘revolting and facile’.

Judge not lest ye be judged etc

phishy · 20/07/2022 07:15

^ tp @Mothapples

ShirleyPhallus · 20/07/2022 07:19

I wouldn’t judge someone for having long nails cos each to their own

But most of the nails posted on this thread are absolutely dreadful - way too big / wide for the posters nails or got flaky cuticles and skin around the nail bed.

ellieboolou · 20/07/2022 07:23

I dislike them but it doesn't bother me or interfere with my life in any way.

Same with lip fillers, slug eyebrows, over use of fake tan, none bother me at all, I quietly think it looks awful and carry on with my day.
