If no one orders, they’re more likely to close. Given that the people working are less likely to be making the decisions and not likely to be on high incomes, you could argue it’s support them morally by not ordering, possibly?

Sorry that makes no sense. You don't support anyone working there by not ordering.

Some places are family run. The place I'm going to is.

Anyway off to get my Indian take out.

Of course it makes sense. I don’t think it’s fair to make someone work in a kitchen in this heat. Ordering would force them to. So it would be hypocritical of me to order.

If they have no orders, they’ll close another time in similar circumstances. Boycotting a service you think is immoral isn’t nonsensical. It’s a long term strategy. It makes my view clear to the decision maker, who will make no profit from me. The worker gets paid though. If literally no one ordered, they’d get paid for doing nothing, which is the best outcome from their perspective (I concede this unlikely. I didn’t say it was popular. Just moral. And I make no judgement it’s just what I would do)

I’m the interests of complete transparency, I can’t afford takeaway atm. So it’s a bit moot. However, if I could, I wouldn’t. Which was the question.

Bubblebubblebah · 19/07/2022 18:55

Weren't so immoral in hight of covid....

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 19/07/2022 19:02

We just ordered a Mexican! Will give the driver a nice tip (and offer a glass of water) when they arrive.
We were at work today - no air con in the office (got up to 36c inside).
Drivers on zero hours contracts may not have the luxury of taking a day unpaid just because their customers may feel (maybe justifiably) guilty about employing them.
People have to earn a living.

luxxlisbon · 19/07/2022 19:04

Two different drivers and no tip? 😂 you didn’t feel that guilty then!

Yep and if the weather continued like this the long term strategy would close them down. Hmm, a win for who?

stuntbubbles · 19/07/2022 19:47

. So no tip for them
WOW.

riesenrad · 19/07/2022 20:44

I've just been for a walk and went via the supermarket as I needed a couple of things. Walked past KFC and McDonalds and oh my the heat radiating off them (and the smell, yuck, you don't really notice it when its not this hot). I do feel for the people who have to work there.

(McDonalds didn't open during the first lockdown, for the person who referenced covid, not sure about KFC)

OneTC · 19/07/2022 20:46

What temperature do I need to wait for it to hit until it's acceptable?

It's 28C here now but it's raining sideways. Should I factor the rain into account?

I can’t control everything. I can control where and when I spend my money to support my values.

I feel that unusual conditions require unusual behaviour. Not panic and hysteria, just sensible accommodations. If we’re going to get heat like this for a few days a year, likely it’s not financially viable to install air con etc etc. but it’s not fair to make people work in kitchens in it either. I’m refusing to and I won’t make someone else do it. I’m just making the best choice I can with what I have.

In that I wouldn’t ask people to work in a kitchen in the height of covid? I didn’t have takeaways then, either. And there was furlough for workers and support for business who closed.

chubbachub · 19/07/2022 22:44

My dh suggested a mcdonalds delivery today when I said it was too hot to cook for ages.
I suggested a picnic of sandwiches and cold bits at the garden table.

We settled on kids having nuggets in the air fryer, beans and "waffle chips" ( potato waffles done in toaster and cut into sticks 😂)
Me and Dh had sandwiches.

I just didnt feel like eating anything hot and also thought the delivery would take ageeees. By the sounds of your post OP, the mcdonalds did take a while so im glad now. Its so expensive as well and they always forget something !

Hopefully cooling down a bit tomorrow and I can get back on to my usual meal plan.

5128gap · 20/07/2022 09:11

Presumably those boycotting restaurants they believe forced their staff to work (which includes every single food outlet that remained open) will continue with the boycott indefinitely and only ever use places that closed? If you feel a business treats its staff inhumanely, surely you should never support them again, and tell them why. Otherwise its a pointless empty gesture.

@pd339 think about what kind of person you are to not even consider delivery drivers or cooks. Many people do care, I’m afraid. It’s a genuine question. Please remove yourself from this post

😂😂😂

Goady AND pompous! Well done OP.

Nc830 · 19/07/2022 18:08

Well I ordered 2 one for me one for kids as they wanted something different

dominos was young boy delivering, he was happy and when I apologised for ordering he said it gets me a wage so I’m good

mcdonalds on Justeat taking the p*SS as usual took 1 hour 30 mins. Time on the bag of food said 16:23 but was delivered 15 minutes ago, down to drivers using multiple apps and turning off their signal. So no tip for them

Oh you are such great value OP.
Goady, pompous AND hypocritical!

WILL NOBODY THINK OF THE SLAVES?

Wondering if the upper class know that the delivery drivers aren’t employed by the restaurant.. or do they not care what the slaves do

KilmordenCastle · 20/07/2022 09:59

I was working in a restaurant last night. The chefs were nearly fainting, the kitchen was unbearable. It really was inhumane. But we are part of a big chain so are we allowed to close? Not a fucking chance. Couldn't turn away money now could we? The people at the top who would never set foot in a kitchen that hot don't give a shit about the staff, they only care about money. I get the argument about "dont be a chef if you can't handle the heat" but this was on a whole different level. In the end the chefs simply refused to keep cooking so we had to turn people away, they got to the point where they didn't even care about their jobs anymore they just had to get out of that kitchen 😂

I don't know how it is for the staff in independent restaurants but for those in the big chains you either lump it or lose your job.

Comefromaway · 20/07/2022 10:06

We had a chippy last night. Partly because 5 teenage lads were having band practice in the garage and it was easier to get several large portions of chips than to try and cook for them.

Dh said the chip shop was awful, he felt really sorry for the staff and they told him they were about to phone the owner and tell him they were closing.

PinkSyCo · 20/07/2022 13:29

Is this post all about showing how morally superior you are or something OP. Because if not, I’m really confused by your ‘dilemma.’

Taken to it‘s logical end point, yes. I think not buying in this heat makes it clear why, though. I do boycott some firms beyond the incident. But it’s a real-world balance too. I like to support local independent businesses. If I had to make the choice between (for example) McDonald’s who closed in the heat, and a local indie that didn’t, I choose the indie. But not during the heatwave itself. It’s not possible to be perfect.

Hmm1234 · 20/07/2022 18:27

I’ve noticed a few people doing this on my nursery run/ dog walk and it tends to be the ‘shut in’ types. You never know why people can’t leave the house and need to order in a takeaway.

Mirw · 20/07/2022 18:33

So delivery drivers have no living expenses and don't need the money? Not all takeaways deliver, some you have to actually go and pick up the food yourself! And Indian food is made for the heat, because guess what, summers in India are... Hot! Spicy is great for the heat as it cools you down from the inside out.

I agree with you but to be fair to your responder your OP post did not make the angle of kindness and consideration to the workers clear, but how thoughtful of you.

avamiah · 21/07/2022 02:27

Let’s be honest here, restaurants and all hospitality had to close here in the UK during Covid and so many restaurants never re opened so yes we have experienced a heat wave but that doesn’t mean all restaurants should close and we all stay at home in a dark room with our feet in a bucket of cold water and watch Netflix.

It’s up to the restaurant or takeaway to decide if they want to open and this time they have a Choice .
