Ordering a takeaway in this heat?

As the title says

OP posts:

My window cleaner came today, in the middle of the day, I felt guilty, but he's a young lad who didn't look remotely phased by it. The guy he works for is a really decent guy, his staff are well looked after so I got over myself (he was the one with the cool spray water & he does it with a long handled brush & treated water, so no hefting ladders around it manually washing windows & drying them. Owner has been paid & they're probably all at the pub by now 🍻 (lives around the corner, they often go for a quick pint after work & take it in turns to drive).

not sure about takeaways though, but as I can't eat them it doesn't matter what I think.

kimfox · 19/07/2022 16:51

I was having the same debate with myself - but I think I will get one if I can because if people are willing to work as a chef / delivery driver in this heat I guess they will appreciate the cash and the tip. If I can't actually get one because no one is working then I will accept I am bu!

magicstar1 · 19/07/2022 14:49

Surely if the takeaway is open for business they need the custom. If it's too hot for them to work, then they close.

I'm not worried about the companies. I'm worried about the delivery people who are probably being exploited and may not be able to afford to decline the work.

I wouldn't do it. Most deliveries here are done by bike. It's too hot for cycling today.

Didn't your last sentence just explain why?
Those cyclists won't get the work .

Why do you think they won't get the work?

If people don't order.

WeAllHaveWings · 19/07/2022 17:00

Ds(18) is a PT dominos delivery driver and would rather be out in car with aircon on and listening to tunes than hanging about the roasting hot shop/kitchen with other bored drivers waiting for an order to come in.

Sorry, I've just understood your point. Duh!

True, if people don't order, they won't get paid for today. However, when I said that they won't be able to afford to decline the work, I meant that they may be scared of saying no and missing out on work in the future, rather than needing today's pay. Of course, the latter may also be true.

I used to work with a group of very disadvantaged young people, many of whom were delivery drivers for a well known company. They felt obliged to take the work that was given to them because they were worried about saying no. They probably could have managed without working for a day but they were always scared of missing out on further work as a result of calling in sick etc.

CanofCant · 19/07/2022 17:04

Gold star for OP who has the committment and drive to post a load of old flannel in this heat.

Don't tell the op, don't want to burst her bubble.

Love,
A poor, low skilled worker who has spent the day at my menial job.

I see what you're saying. Grim.

But ultimately without knowing the specifics every time it's still a high risk strategy to think you're 'helping' delivery drivers by not ordering.

WiddlinDiddlin · 19/07/2022 17:10

some work directly for the resturant they deliver for, some work for ubereats/deliveroo, some.. do both!

If the restaurants are open, then the staff, drivers included won't thankyou for NOT ordering, its not fun sat in the shop and theres no option to sit in the car now... ... too expensive to sit with the engine running to run the air con.

If you feel some awful sense of guilt for ordering, tip your driver and/or offer them a cold drink, ice lolly, something nice like that.

HouseInTheHills · 19/07/2022 17:10

Our friends own a restaurant so we ordered from there last night and will be doing the same tonight. I collected, but mainly so that I could say hello. They were happy to be busy, some eating in but lots of takeaways being collected and delivered.

@pd339 think about what kind of person you are to not even consider delivery drivers or cooks. Many people do care, I’m afraid. It’s a genuine question. Please remove yourself from this post

If the business is open and cooking, then realistically that's expected people will order food.

Don't be daft. If they choose to open, they are open. It's not up to you to decide whether they should be working, its up to them

Wondering if the upper class know that the delivery drivers aren’t employed by the restaurant.. or do they not care what the slaves do

What are you smoking?

Spaghag · 19/07/2022 17:23

I was going to say that several chippies & restaurants have closed here due to the heat.

But I see the thread has moved past that sort of thing 🤐

ScentOfSawdust · 19/07/2022 17:24

Order what you like, but if you really care about working conditions you’ll only get a delivery if it’s made by restaurant staff, not Uber eats/deliveroo. And I’d prefer the whole cost of the takeaway to support a small local business than see a large cut go to a morally dubious Silicon Valley behemoth.

Not hot weather specific though.

OneTC · 19/07/2022 17:30

Considering deliveroo and that are gig jobs anyone who rocked up today either wants to or needs to. How does depriving them of paid work help at all?

Also the obvious inference is that you're happy to use these precariously employed slaves unless it's a bit warm? No concerns otherwise?

Your posts show a real problem with class and judgement, OP.

Nope. But if the OP considers them slaves then presumably that’s not weather dependent either.

Lovemusic33 · 19/07/2022 17:36

I probably wouldn’t order one to be delivered but would happily go through McDonalds drive through or to dominos 😬

I guess it depends where you live and how food is delivered, most cars have air conditioning so it’s probably the best place to be right now but if being delivered by a bike or motorbike it’s a different story.

Blackmoggy · 19/07/2022 17:36

Nc830 · 19/07/2022 14:43

@Immaterialatthispoint
am I being unreasonable to order one… just thinking of delivery drivers and cooks

I held off getting shopping delivered today for the same reasons...I'd feel like an A-hole.
