To take it back, people do need the obvious pointing out to them in the heat

I’ve been thinking it’s all a bit Over the top, the heat fuss.

But no, some idiot at 3:20 pm walked their medium size dog pass my house (London, hot hot). Dog was very reluctant and she was totally confused as to why, pulling the lead.

My kids beat me too it,
12 yr old ‘it’s too hot for dogs! What are you doing!’
6 yr old ‘the pavement will burn his feet’

I mean a fucking 6 yr old, not dog owning or even having spoken about dogs and heat, and look and assess the situation.

I despair.

btw I left my dog owning scary neighbour to descend with full annoyance and resolve the stupidity.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 18/07/2022 18:11

This was years ago, but my father once found a baby left in a hot car, at a County Show - the sort of place you go to for a leisurely wander, not even ‘just dashing in for milk’. He called the police and stayed until they got there and broke the window. The paramedics who also came said that the baby would have died if they had been in there even half an hour longer.

Some people are stupid and negligent.

GirlInTheDryShirt · 18/07/2022 18:12

Spaniard checking in to hopefully resolve the window quandary: keep them closed, do not open your windows when it’s 40°C outside! Also keep your house as dark as possible, from sunrise to sunset. Once it’s cooled down a bit at night open two windows at either side of the house (if poss) to get a through breeze.

Beees · 18/07/2022 18:15

Don't you have dinking water available at school? I don't carry water with me to work either...

Of course we have water at school. What I don't have is an endless supply of cups for every child to have one each or a sink in my classroom for children to fill them up when they want a drink. Which is why they are all asked to bring a water bottle so they can drink when thirsty and I can refill them at breaktime and lunchtime. Not much I can do with a thirsty child who needs a cup of water in the middle of a maths lesson.

badgerbognor · 18/07/2022 18:16

YANBU unreasonable! I had an acquaintance who complained that her german shepherd would literally collapse on walks in the heat in the summer but still refused to get its coat clipped as it would look 'stupid'. Selfish arse!

At the other end I have seen a lady in full freezing Scottish winter, wearing full length winter coat and hat and gloves with a tiny, chihuahua with no coat, absolutely shivering and miserable. Selfish arse!

It you are more considered about your thorough bred dogs appearance than its wellbeing and whether its fucking miserable, then you shouldn't have a dog!

ANUsernam · 18/07/2022 18:17

I spent all morning dealing with my Mum's tantrums about me having the windows wide open late last night, then closing all the windows about 8am this morning when the outside started to get hotter than inside. It's been a pleasant ten degrees cooler inside the house all afternoon than it is outside.

Thankfully she seems to have finally grasped the concept after she went out this afternoon and came back to a nice cool house.

Based on the current hourly forecast and indoor temperature I won't be opening my windows until about 10pm

Pedallleur · 18/07/2022 18:17

People in cars that have ac or even better climate control but drive around with the windows open. If you run the air con it's like leaving the fridge door open. The car won't get cool, the cold air is just warming the atmosphere

In this situation, if its physically possible, break the window yourself (buy a 'rescue me'). As you said, that baby could very well have died before the police arrived.

I had a friend who broke the window of a car that a dog was in. She was brave and actually stayed till the owners came and explained why she did what she did. They were actually ok about it.

What do you do in the winter then?

Cervinia · 18/07/2022 18:28

My cats have spent the day snoozing in our pitch black cool house. Meanwhile I spent the day with DD painting her garden fences and potting plants. Whose the idiot? 😂 I did have cream on, a hat, a long floaty dress and drank pints.

Cats went outside at 5 after tea, one came back in at six and is laid on my granite worktops cooling down. Cat 2 is still out, she will be laid in some bushes somewhere. She loves the heat, no chance she is coming in tonight through choice.

kedavra · 18/07/2022 18:32

At DSs school one of the other parents is a dog walker. Even today she had a customers poor dog stood of the pavement at early collection time. It was making a horrid clicking noise as it panted.

Ive spotted a jogger wearing a heavy looking backpack and an apocalyptic looking mask which I'm assuming is to make breathing harder. Different strokes and all that.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 18/07/2022 18:32

I drove past a heavily sweating overweight older man in cycle gear on my way home in boiling sun. He looked bright red. Idiot.

vitahelp · 18/07/2022 18:33

LauraChant · 18/07/2022 16:09

I just saw someone out jogging...at least I assume that is what they were doing, running along in sports gear with a bottle of water, I suppose they could have just been running to get somewhere quickly and happened to be wearing sports shorts and top. Still pretty hot to run whatever the reason!

@LauraChant I’m quite impressed with this, I suppose if you’re training for an event you have to just carry on. Some people I know do events overseas as well so it helps to be used to running in the heat.
I’ve found running in winter more perilous though, I slipped on the ice in Jan and made a right mess of my knee! 😂

Some people are idiots. There was an article yesterday about the police breaking into a cat to get a dog out.

This is still happening!!!

Gosh - must have been a huge cat, or a very small dog??

Treaclemine · 18/07/2022 18:34

I have a three storey terraced town house, front facing east, back facing west. Morning, front all closed, back open, then reverse. Fans on all floors.. My bedroom, west, was uninhabitable earlier, but bearable now. There is a built in air circulation which I have not noticed having any effect, though it draws in air where it is cooler downstairs.
This morning I experimented with watering the garden next to the west, so that evaporation might cool the incoming air. Not convinced it helped. Especially as the house bricks dried instantly!
I want somewhere where can have a well as a source for chilled air, as I once saw on a programme about Islamic science.

ferneytorro · 18/07/2022 18:36

It is all appealing to the lowest common denominator and people who have been poorly patented so haven’t had basic sun safety messages provided.

PearTree120 · 18/07/2022 18:37

This thread is unpleasantly reminiscent of the lockdown threads. All smug and gloaty and sanctimonious.

Slowslowlavaflow · 18/07/2022 18:38

At 3pm on my way to pick child up from school, the car display was showing outside temp to be 38.5°C. I saw on the opposite side of the road, a pair of what appeared to be 13 year olds with no tops on in the back of a cart, whacking a poor pony to go up a very busy and steep hill. They were laughing as it clearly struggled.

Sigh.

Or he could be very committed to getting healthy and losing weight and willing to work through the weather

Quornflakegirl · 18/07/2022 18:42

Coming home from the a school run I saw a father and daughter (she was about 9 or 10) going for a full on run. They were dressed in running gear and pounding the pavement. It was 3:30 and 39 degrees. I gawped.

If he has a clue about improving his health he won’t be out cycling during extreme heat.
