To take it back, people do need the obvious pointing out to them in the heat

I’ve been thinking it’s all a bit Over the top, the heat fuss.

But no, some idiot at 3:20 pm walked their medium size dog pass my house (London, hot hot). Dog was very reluctant and she was totally confused as to why, pulling the lead.

My kids beat me too it,
12 yr old ‘it’s too hot for dogs! What are you doing!’
6 yr old ‘the pavement will burn his feet’

I mean a fucking 6 yr old, not dog owning or even having spoken about dogs and heat, and look and assess the situation.

I despair.

btw I left my dog owning scary neighbour to descend with full annoyance and resolve the stupidity.

I went out to collect ds from school activity at 2pm today, 36 degrees outside, and nearly every house had at least some windows open. Lots of houses had all the upstairs windows open. It's going to be a hot night for a lot of people around here

it will be even hotter with the windows closed. You still need air in. I have got the upstairs curtains closed though.

No, I live in a hot country, once the air outside is hotter than the air inside you close windows and shutters/ blinds/ curtains.

NothingIsWrong · 18/07/2022 17:44

We went into Oxford today to take advantage of the crazy golf and escape rooms that were nice and air conditioned. On the way back, I drove past someone cycling - they must have done at least 2 miles with another couple to go on a completely shadeless country road - wearing black jeans and a black PADDED LONG SLEEVED JACKET. My car was saying 36deg at that point

YANBU. I have seen several prams with muslins draped over them today and pre-school age children with no hats on.

My 2 year old outright refuses to wear a hat. Hates them. We've had every type and he still refuses. Spent 20 quid on one with a chin tie and fastener that was 'guaranteed' to stay on. I endured the judgemental tutting of an (older) woman as I dared to take him outside this morning to get him to nursery so I could go to work, on a non-airconditioned hospital ward. It's not always as simple as it looks. It's unlikely that your average parent of a toddler has simply not bothered to try to get their kid to wear a hat

Agree with this also, my two year old granddaughter refuses to wear a hat and there is sod all you can do about it

In general opening windows doesn't help in very high temperature because you just equalise indoors with outdoors and make your house as hot as it is outside. If it really does get to 40 there is no fresh air.
Under 35 degrees it might work. I live in Spain and we've had 44 degrees recently.

Yes, depends purely on the outside/inside temps.

If hotter outside, opening windows/doors will only pull hot air through and warm the building.

If hotter inside, cross ventilating will cool the building.

That said I like the air movement even if it's hotter out than in. But we are nowhere near 30 let alone 40!

I just saw someone out jogging...at least I assume that is what they were doing, running along in sports gear with a bottle of water, I suppose they could have just been running to get somewhere quickly and happened to be wearing sports shorts and top. Still pretty hot to run whatever the reason!

My husband went out for a run at lunchtime. He didn't take water though (he never does). He survived but did come back saying the roads were empty, he didn't see a soul apart from two people getting out of a car and staring strangely at him and also it was a wee bit warm.

It certainly wouldn't be my idea of fun..

Gwenhwyfar · 18/07/2022 17:48

"10 of them had parents who didn't think it necessary to send them to school with a water bottle"

Don't you have dinking water available at school? I don't carry water with me to work either...

I also didn't wear a hat today because hats make my head even hotter. I may wear one tomorrow though as that will be the hottest day where I am.

Quia · 18/07/2022 17:49

There's already an extraordinary number of idiots wandering around looking like broiled lobsters. Makes me wince just looking at them.

RagingWoke · 18/07/2022 17:51

There's one school mum I'm fb friends with who has posting non stop about how the warnings are rubbish and 'iTs CaLlEd SuMmEr'... constant photos of her lying in the sun and the dc naked or in just underwear, no hats, no shade, already sunburned in the garden. No plans to change that tomorrow when we're looking at 38 degrees.

I've seen very few dogs out thankfully but so many babies with blankets or muslins over the prams!

NCembarassed · 18/07/2022 17:52

@NeverDropYourMooncup my cat is similar. Looking v.hot and grumpy (cat, not me!).

Put a fan in the living room to make her more comfortable. Cat scarpered to Eldest's bed, to snuggle in her duvet. Idiot! Turns out cat will not enter a room where a fan is on.

To cool down, she likes to sprawl on the landing, later in the day. I'm tempted to get a cool mat for her, but don't trust her claws and she'd ignore it.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 18/07/2022 17:54

if the windows are shut surely it is difficult to breath?
thats what i find

Stomacharmeleon · 18/07/2022 17:55

My pug steps over the cool mat... skirts round it! She is spread eagled in front of the fan now.

One of the school mum's was late picking up this afternoon as she was helping a security guard at a local supermarket mop up the blood all over his hand, after he had to break the window of a car that had a 2 week old baby inside.
The parents (there were actually 5 adults who had travelled in the car but she couldn't hang around to find out who they all were!) had left their newborn, in the car, no windows down, wearing a baby grow.

The security guard heard the baby screaming and broke the window immediately. It's 37 degrees here today. I wasn't even there and it will haunt me for a very long time 😔

Thank God for that security guard.
Probably saved that baby's life.
I wouldn't leave a newborn in a car unattended in normal temperatures let alone this.
Wtf is wrong with people?

Spanielsarepainless · 18/07/2022 17:55

It's low 30s here (but more humid than most places). I felt the pavement just now and it's too hot to take a dog on it.

HailAdrian · 18/07/2022 17:57

I was out from around 10-2 in 34 degree heat and was absolutely fine slathered in sunscreen, staying mostly in the shade and drinking loads of water. Of course you shouldn't walk your dog in it but I'm not judging people just for going out.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 18/07/2022 17:58

my dog was hot @ 8 this morning, it felt cool to me, but she was panting, we ended our walk and have been inside since and it seems that it wont get lower than 23 until 4 tomorrow morning

What do you do in the winter then?

mydogisthebest · 18/07/2022 17:59

On different days I have experimented with windows open and curtains closed, both windows and curtains open and both windows and curtains closed.

It is definitely much cooler with both closed. If it cools down tonight I will open windows in the bedroom and living room

Spanielsarepainless · 18/07/2022 18:00

In our last house I would close the windows on the sunny side and open on the shady side, which worked for the way the house was orientated. This house is different and the windows are all open and a cool draught is running through the sitting room.

ancientgran · 18/07/2022 18:00

I live in a buckets and spades seaside town. It is a normal sight to see visitors arrive pale and interesting on a Saturday, red and lobster like by the Monday. You have to feel sorry for them as it looks so painful but it is madness and it happens all summer (if we have one) year after year.

i found it too stuffy to breath without a window open today - thanks for your --nonconcern @swimlyn

FabFitFifties · 18/07/2022 18:03

It's only 31 here, but I still question the wisdom of the joggers out today.

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 18/07/2022 18:07

dinosaurcookie · 18/07/2022 17:29

We've had all the windows shut and curtains drawn and it is 10 degrees cooler in the house than outside, I always used to open windows but I'm a convert! Opening the door to the garden is like stepping off a plane in the Mediterranean!

We've only just opened windows....

Closed since 9am, and blinds down.

It's 12 degrees cooler inside now 🙏👍.

Partner was brought up in stiflingly hot place.... Follow their leads.

So people in hot countries shouldn't jog?
I wouldn't personally want to jog in temperatures over 30, but seasoned joggers should be able to deal with it.
