To take it back, people do need the obvious pointing out to them in the heat

I’ve been thinking it’s all a bit Over the top, the heat fuss.

But no, some idiot at 3:20 pm walked their medium size dog pass my house (London, hot hot). Dog was very reluctant and she was totally confused as to why, pulling the lead.

My kids beat me too it,
12 yr old ‘it’s too hot for dogs! What are you doing!’
6 yr old ‘the pavement will burn his feet’

I mean a fucking 6 yr old, not dog owning or even having spoken about dogs and heat, and look and assess the situation.

I despair.

btw I left my dog owning scary neighbour to descend with full annoyance and resolve the stupidity.

We've tested the windows advice out and find the air in our house to be stifling and much hotter with all windows/doors closed. Hot days are far more bearable when the air is able to circulate with the kitchen doors open, as well as the odd window upstairs.

We have a Juliette balcony which, although pointless most of the year, means we're usually able to quickly cool the upstairs of the house when the temperature drops in an evening.

I've never been a fan of hot weather and we're in the red zone (41 degrees tomorrow) but surprisingly I'm finding the extreme heat isn't really an issue

In general opening windows doesn't help in very high temperature because you just equalise indoors with outdoors and make your house as hot as it is outside. If it really does get to 40 there is no fresh air.
Under 35 degrees it might work. I live in Spain and we've had 44 degrees recently.

Some people are idiots. There was an article yesterday about the police breaking into a cat to get a dog out.

This is still happening!!!

Really great typo 😂

Not sure I agree totally with the window thing. Ours is definitely hotter inside than out if we leave them shut. It has windows on three sides and gets the sun all afternoon so it's like a greenhouse. We don't have curtains on all the window either so can't shut them all.

We never have to put the heating on in winter though!

I don't agree with the windows closed during the day stuff either. In this house it certainly feels as if the opposite is true.

I've tried the windows shut i

colouringindoors · 18/07/2022 17:20

yanbu

Most people up my road have their windows open today. It was 39 degrees here at 4pm. Bonkers.

p.s. good on your kids OP 😉

I have one rather closer to home than I admit.

Sorry... I am too
My fucking idiot DP has walked his collie to the beach with dsd. They 'won't be long' and despite my efforts to hate them take the collapsible dog bowl, this was inconvenient because then they'd also have to take a bottle of water. When I suggested they walk a different route passing the quarry which the dog could stop at I was given another poor excuse that 'ddog will get water when she's back and they won't be long'
I'm not happy. This was over an hour ago

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 18/07/2022 17:22

I saw a couple with a toddler who was clearly just learning to walk with a huge black rucksack on her back. The poor child was weighed down and sweltering. Just utterly ridiculous.

I went out to collect ds from school activity at 2pm today, 36 degrees outside, and nearly every house had at least some windows open. Lots of houses had all the upstairs windows open. It's going to be a hot night for a lot of people around here

it will be even hotter with the windows closed. You still need air in. I have got the upstairs curtains closed though.

That's what I was arguing until today - my windows are now firmly closed !!

StupidUsernameUnavailable · 18/07/2022 17:24

My windows, blinds and curtains have been closed all day. They windows will be opened up at about 7. Its really made a difference today. DD3 and I have spent the day watching Disney. Been quite nice actually.

One of the school mum's was late picking up this afternoon as she was helping a security guard at a local supermarket mop up the blood all over his hand, after he had to break the window of a car that had a 2 week old baby inside.
The parents (there were actually 5 adults who had travelled in the car but she couldn't hang around to find out who they all were!) had left their newborn, in the car, no windows down, wearing a baby grow.

The security guard heard the baby screaming and broke the window immediately. It's 37 degrees here today. I wasn't even there and it will haunt me for a very long time 😔

I hope social services get involved with that.

How ridiculous

I suspect that the fact that you don't have curtains is why your house is hotter with the windows closed !!

Topseyt123 · 18/07/2022 17:28

Arrgh! I was trying to say that I have tried the windows shut idea and the house became stifling. Probably because I don't have or want curtains or blinds on every window.

It was unbearable. I now have all windows open plus front and back doors. A lovely cooling breeze is now wafting through and is much more comfortable. Some people will clearly label me stupid for that but I couldn't give a shit. We are more comfortable this way.

In this house windows will be open all day and all night.

dinosaurcookie · 18/07/2022 17:29

We've had all the windows shut and curtains drawn and it is 10 degrees cooler in the house than outside, I always used to open windows but I'm a convert! Opening the door to the garden is like stepping off a plane in the Mediterranean!

shinynewapple22 · 18/07/2022 17:30

PeloAddict · 18/07/2022 17:07

I have spent ages worrying about the cat. I have fans on, cooling mats and it's 24c inside and pleasant
Outside is like an oven

The cat meanwhile Hmm

I've had to shut my back door to stop the dog from sunbathing !

MsFogi · 18/07/2022 17:31

I saw quite a few joggers over lunchtime!!

AnotherEmma · 18/07/2022 17:33

This thread makes for an amusing read, as the continued insistence on the necessity of opening windows somewhat demonstrates the OP's point Grin

It's not rocket science. Cover your windows (we have blackout blinds for travel that we've been using for otherwise uncovered windows - we have a big one on one side of the house that we move at midday). Windows open from dusk until about 9am. Closed the rest of the day. If you want a breeze, use a fan.

balalake · 18/07/2022 17:34

I agree OP.

I have just come back from Paris and none of the stupidity, went to a park for an exhibition (indoors in a park building) and people were sitting in the shade chatting or having a picnic.

LilyMarshall · 18/07/2022 17:35

I was on a shop carpark yesterday and heard a baby crying. Found the car and was stood looking around for an adult. Then spotted a small child in the back put a hand on the window. So two kids left alone in the car, one in a baby carseat. In the heat. No shade. I was about to open the doors to the car when the mother came back.

and i am suck of seeing people cover prams with blankets!

@HeleenaHandcart you and your children know nothing about the dog owner’s circumstances.

Has it even occurred to you that they might live in a flat and the dog needs to go out to do its business? Lots of dogs literally won’t “shit on their own doorstep” and need a little stroll to make them perform.

They might have been walking the dog to work with them so it wasn’t left alone in a boiling hot house all day.

They might, as someone said upthread, be off to the vet. How do you expect people to transport their dogs when they don’t drive?

Having children who are rude to adults isn’t clever or funny.

Agree with this for the most part - especially regarding the kids. You might want to teach them that gobbing off to people in the street can have undesirable consequences OP.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 18/07/2022 17:42

I had to have words with the sodding cat earlier.

I magnanimously sacrificed one of our fans for her benefit as she was flopped out on the kitchen floor and sat here sweltering. I sort of dozed off, as I didn't sleep much last night, only to find that the great ball of fluff had decided the best place to be on the hottest day of the year was no longer on the coolest surface with the fan, but ON MY LAP.

She's now back to splodging full length on the sofa with her fluff all sticking out, as she's now decided that the fan is a better option again.

Oh, and DP's up in the warmest room in the house, refused to put back the curtains he took down weeks ago, in full sun with the heat creeping down from the loft, which is intolerably hot in midwinter, moving shit around tidying. Just. Leave. It.

blab90 · 18/07/2022 17:42

Thankfully, the police were called but I have no idea what happened from there. That poor baby 😔

PearlClutch · 18/07/2022 17:43

YANBU, someone needs to have a word with my dog, who keeps taking herself out to lie in the sunshine in the hottest part of the garden. Then when I bring her back in stands there panting, looking at me like it's my fault she's too hot.
