To take it back, people do need the obvious pointing out to them in the heat

I’ve been thinking it’s all a bit Over the top, the heat fuss.

But no, some idiot at 3:20 pm walked their medium size dog pass my house (London, hot hot). Dog was very reluctant and she was totally confused as to why, pulling the lead.

My kids beat me too it,
12 yr old ‘it’s too hot for dogs! What are you doing!’
6 yr old ‘the pavement will burn his feet’

I mean a fucking 6 yr old, not dog owning or even having spoken about dogs and heat, and look and assess the situation.

I despair.

btw I left my dog owning scary neighbour to descend with full annoyance and resolve the stupidity.

I agree with the dog walking on pavements as that will damage their paws, but if people want to go running or sitting out in the sun in this heat that's their business surely? Each to their own!

Well you could use the same argument that plenty of MNers were using during covid when people drove for exercise - what will happen if you have an accident and need the NHS (or you break down).

If you go out unnecessarily, pass out and need the NHS you are putting an unnecessary burden on it. I have more sympathy with people driving for exercise during covid than going out for a run in the heat of a 36 degree day.

onlywhenidream · 18/07/2022 16:32

You need the heat out

You only have windows open when it's cooler outside than in

If the sun is on the window you also close curtains and blinds

MissingGrandstand · 18/07/2022 16:33

@Soubriquet this is amazing, I'm now imagining some 'there was an old lady who swallowed a fly' type of scenario

Sorry OP I've nothing to add to the actual thread 😂

Stellaris22 · 18/07/2022 16:33

Seeing the Wetherspoons outside space nearly full at 10am with people drinking pints worried me this morning.

A woman at my kids school today had their little Cockapoo out in a harness, poor dog was panting really fast. She was just standing there with it waiting for her grandkids. Absolute idiot

BroomHandledMouser · 18/07/2022 16:36

My DD (10) is currently in a right strop with me because I said no to her going to the park to meet her friends.

No love, just no 🤦🏼‍♀️

roundtable · 18/07/2022 16:37

Dh saw someone walking their dog at 2pm.

Not all children had water bottles today - a parent actively aggressive towards staff when they rang up to see if there was one left at home.

Just driven past children playing out with no tops on. The mind boggles.

knittingaddict · 18/07/2022 16:37

We went to a flea market yesterday when temperatures were about 28 degrees. Not as many dogs as usual, but still far more than I expected or was wise. One was a Newfoundland with a very thick black coat. He had a cooling vest on, but was still panting continuously in the coolest area. Most of it was on concrete, so must have been boiling hot on their paws too.

And it's bloody hard to keep them safe when they think they know best.

How old is the idiot?

i presume there's not a dig involved?

I went out to collect ds from school activity at 2pm today, 36 degrees outside, and nearly every house had at least some windows open. Lots of houses had all the upstairs windows open. It's going to be a hot night for a lot of people around here

it will be even hotter with the windows closed. You still need air in. I have got the upstairs curtains closed though.

Actually you should shut windows and curtains to stop the hot air from getting in. At dusk you open everything up. Try it, it really works.

catandcoffee · 18/07/2022 16:41

A quote I recently came across.

Common sense so rare it's like a superpower.

I think I'm going to get it printed on t-shirt, because it's so true.

You should only have the windows open when the air outside is cooler than inside. Having windows open in the middle of the day is just letting hot air into the house.

Best thing is blinds down, curtains drawn and windows closed between 10am(ish) - 7pm(ish).

KilmordenCastle · 18/07/2022 16:43

Actually tbf with weather like this I won't be opening the windows until its dark.

Amazing isn't it.

I'm looking after my daughter's Cavapoo puppy today and then the grandchildren after school. My husband has done the school run, so that the puppy doesn't need to leave the house (and neither do I).

Despite 36 degree temperatures outside it is 26.5 in the hallway and I put a cooling vest on him after he got the zoomies. To be honest I was more worried about the dog than the grandchildren because the dog can't tell us how he feels.

thebear1 · 18/07/2022 16:47

My teen ds insisted he wear his school blazer today, I thought he was being ridiculous but driving to work I noticed he was far from alone. Lots of teens in blazers despite the school saying they don't need to.
Its the animals and children I feel sorry for as they are a victim usually of an idiot adult.

Soubriquet · 18/07/2022 16:48

Bollocks. Damn you autocorrect!! Grin

Fluffygreenslippers · 18/07/2022 16:49

I’m sadly not surprised. I remember in the last heat wave, it was 33 or so, I had to pop to the corner shop and left my own dog at home with the fan. Saw a woman walking a fluffy Pomeranian in the blazing sun. There are loads of people round my way sitting in their garden in the sun. It’s 38 degrees atm. My Indian husband thinks they’re mad.

knittingaddict · 18/07/2022 16:49

Agree about having windows closed as I think it's really made a difference today. Usually we have windows open for a through draft, but the only windows we have open are the velux ones on the landing and in the extension. Despite the extension opening onto the lounge and having lots of glass it is still bearable inside today.

Yep until they get heat stroke and put more pressure on the hospitals.

fairgame84 · 18/07/2022 16:51

Plenty of people gave me dirty looks while I was walking my dog at 9am. What they didn't know was I was actually ealing him to his vet appointment which he needed to attend. The vet is 2 streets away so 5 minute walk from home. I'm half expecting a post on out local fb page shaming me.

Gosh, it is like you are torturing them instead of keeping them safe.

And I have just come upstairs at ex's to find windows wide open. We have come here to cool off. He's made it less cool than it should be though. Grr.

RingBlingThing · 18/07/2022 16:55

Not sure I agree totally with the window thing. Ours is definitely hotter inside than out if we leave them shut. It has windows on three sides and gets the sun all afternoon so it's like a greenhouse. We don't have curtains on all the window either so can't shut them all.

We never have to put the heating on in winter though!

SummerLobelia · 18/07/2022 16:57

shufflestep · 18/07/2022 16:27

How did the cat feel about it!😹

Seriously though, it's unbelievable. Surely even in normal times most people know not to leave dogs in cars?

yeah you would think. Someone posted on our community facebook page about 2 dogs being left in the car while the people shopped at tesco. No shade and windows opened a crack. Cue people piling on and telling them they were interfering cunts and 'you don't know their lives so don't judge'.

I drive every day in this town so know some people are utter fuckwits. But even this just was jaw dropping.

No, windows and curtains should be closed. If they are open the hot air is going to come in. Open the windows when it cools down.
