To take it back, people do need the obvious pointing out to them in the heat

I’ve been thinking it’s all a bit Over the top, the heat fuss.

But no, some idiot at 3:20 pm walked their medium size dog pass my house (London, hot hot). Dog was very reluctant and she was totally confused as to why, pulling the lead.

My kids beat me too it,
12 yr old ‘it’s too hot for dogs! What are you doing!’
6 yr old ‘the pavement will burn his feet’

I mean a fucking 6 yr old, not dog owning or even having spoken about dogs and heat, and look and assess the situation.

I despair.

btw I left my dog owning scary neighbour to descend with full annoyance and resolve the stupidity.

Surely windows closed work if theres A/c in the house? We have closed curtains where the sun is and all windows open. Cant think how it would be with everything closed up!

TuftyMarmoset · 18/07/2022 16:58

Unfortunately multiple people have drowned over the past few days as well, clearly ignoring warnings not to swim or cool off in open water. It’s such an unnecessary loss of life and particularly tragic as two were teenagers.

Not sure I agree totally with the window thing. Ours is definitely hotter inside than out if we leave them shut. It has windows on three sides and gets the sun all afternoon so it's like a greenhouse. We don't have curtains on all the window either so can't shut them all.

We never have to put the heating on in winter though!

When it's hotter inside then you should open the windows

When it's not you shouldn't

You need the heat out

You only have windows open when it's cooler outside than in

If the sun is on the window you also close curtains and blinds

Yes, this.

South side of the house - windows and curtains closed all day. Open the windows after the sun has gone down.

Back or sides of the house, maybe windows open, if the sun isn’t directly on it and there’s a breeze in the right direction.

We sat out on our patio for a while, in complete shade (of a building), thinking the breeze would be nice. It wasn’t enough - it’s 31 degrees here, and the inside of the house is cooler. We retreated.

birdsinthegarden · 18/07/2022 17:00

When we had a dog, on hot days we skipped walking and instead just played with him and the hosepipe in the garden. Great exercise for everyone and a fun way to keep cool too.

Can't believe anyone would take their dog out during daytime.

Dd has gone on a school trip to London today. School just posted a photo of them all and more than half are wearing jeans. I know... teens, what can you do, but seriously.

I went out to collect ds from school activity at 2pm today, 36 degrees outside, and nearly every house had at least some windows open. Lots of houses had all the upstairs windows open. It's going to be a hot night for a lot of people around here.

I open my windows to get a through draft.

You open windows at night to let in the cooler air, then close them in the morning before it starts to heat up again. Even the air from the shaded side of the house at this time of day is going to be warmer than the air at night. Then you keep the curtains closed to prevent the air that is already in the house from warming up.

A quote I recently came across.

Common sense so rare it's like a superpower.

I think I'm going to get it printed on t-shirt, because it's so true.

The thing about common sense is that it really isn't that common.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

That's a great typo!

Poor cat! It must have been starving to have resorted to eating a dog in the first place.

onlywhenidream · 18/07/2022 17:04

If you want a draft and the outside air is hotter than indoors get a fan

@HeleenaHandcart you and your children know nothing about the dog owner’s circumstances.

Has it even occurred to you that they might live in a flat and the dog needs to go out to do its business? Lots of dogs literally won’t “shit on their own doorstep” and need a little stroll to make them perform.

They might have been walking the dog to work with them so it wasn’t left alone in a boiling hot house all day.

They might, as someone said upthread, be off to the vet. How do you expect people to transport their dogs when they don’t drive?

Having children who are rude to adults isn’t clever or funny.

Some people are idiots. There was an article yesterday about the police breaking into a cat to get a dog out.

This is still happening!!!

Police were summoned to our neighbourhood to remove an old lady from inside a fly.
It's so damn hot that nursery tales are running backwards!

127LMS · 18/07/2022 17:06

We've tested the windows advice out and find the air in our house to be stifling and much hotter with all windows/doors closed. Hot days are far more bearable when the air is able to circulate with the kitchen doors open, as well as the odd window upstairs.

We have a Juliette balcony which, although pointless most of the year, means we're usually able to quickly cool the upstairs of the house when the temperature drops in an evening.

I've never been a fan of hot weather and we're in the red zone (41 degrees tomorrow) but surprisingly I'm finding the extreme heat isn't really an issue

Twizbe · 18/07/2022 17:07

I saw a woman on the school run in a full on tracksuit and padded gilet!

Saw a young lad the other day when it was just 30 degrees wearing jeans, a hoodie with the hood up and a huge black coat with hood up.... he was asking to he stopped and searched dressed like that.

tintami · 18/07/2022 17:07

A 90 year old woman was locked in a car at our local supermarket by a family member, no windows left open. People had to smash the windows and paramedics were called as was struggling to breathe. There's no end to the stupidity

PeloAddict · 18/07/2022 17:07

I have spent ages worrying about the cat. I have fans on, cooling mats and it's 24c inside and pleasant
Outside is like an oven

The cat meanwhile Hmm

To take it back, people do need the obvious pointing out to them in the heat

Don't get a dog if you don't have a garden!

This was a small dog so could have been carried.

Unless and emergency I'd have cancelled a routine vet appointment today.

Can you pin a blanket or sheet over the window? Or cover it with tin foil? It makes a huge difference.

LER83 · 18/07/2022 17:12

Yep, woman dragging her small, massively panting dog along at the school today, in 36 degree heat. She was too far away for me to say anything, but lots of people were looking so I'm sure someone gave her a well deserved mouthful.

swimlyn · 18/07/2022 17:14

"You still need air in."

Oh, there's one now... IPMSL

Notagardener · 18/07/2022 17:16

Hm in office which as per covid rules should only have 8 people in it but actually has 12 with lots of people walking in and out. I definitely keep the windows open ( well, the 5cm it opens). Hot and smelly or just hot....

Silverswirl · 18/07/2022 17:16

I honestly never knew about keeping the curtains closed or windows shut during the day when very hot outside. Just used to have windows open and sometimes curtians closed.
Its made a massive difference having the windows closed until dusk. Huge. The house is actually cool for once

Oh well if you don’t have curtains I don’t think keeping them open or shut can do much can it? I’m not sure it matters in a greenhouse!

It’s worked pretty well having windows and shutters / curtains shut here. I’ve got the windows open in the north facing lowest rooms that never get warm anyway for a breeze and everywhere else is as shut as I can get it. DC’s south facing room seems fine so far. I was worried we might have to insist on no pyjamas and duvets but I think both will be fine, it’s not noticeably warmer than normal.
