Dd is meant to be going to the beach tomorrow with the school by coach. I really do not want her to go. But she really wants to. I don't think its a good idea at all. She's 12 incase it's relivent.

The traveling by coach which probably has no air conditioning ( school coaches never seem to ) then no shade .

Are we talking about one of those huge coaches that schools normally take to go to places (see photo of the coach my daughter's school used)? Those ALWAYS have air conditioning! I doubt the teachers would want to sit on a coach without air conditioning! And the whole year group wouldn't fit into one of those small school coaches that perhaps you're thinking of

It's forecast to be 33 degrees in Margate today. There is no shade and only one road in and out. The Operation Brock contra flow is in operation which means more people will use the M2 rather than the M20.

It will be heaving.

When you go on holiday to a hot country the beach is the first place you go.
With suitable preparation for sunscreen, shade, loose clothing, water, etc I'm sure she'll be fine.

It's a work day and it's not school holidays.

Oh behave, there's absolutely no way it's going to look like that on a Monday unless it's a bank holiday!

@Cookiecrumble22
I think you are right. I’m lucky enough to live by the beach, and there’s no way I or dc will be going there today. Maybe this evening.
On a school trip the children can’t go into the sea and there’s no shade.
Could you say to your dd that you will take her another time?

FavouritePi · 18/07/2022 07:57

I think some posters have forgotten some schools have broken up already, some people have taken today off or offices closed (although I appreciate many will need to work from home). It will be busier than the usual Monday.

I personally wouldn't send her, vehicles are more likely to break down in the heat and coaches are awful anyway, especially when stuck on motorways.

Plus, what could they possibly do that will keep them cool whilst exposed under the hot sun on a beach? The sand will be too hot and they won't be able to swim in the water anyway.

Clymene · 18/07/2022 08:11

@Thatsenoughnow - did I say it would be that busy? Confused It won't be quiet though. As a pp has pointed out, many schools have finished, lots of people may have taken the day off. And the trains are running a go slow so the roads will be busier.

The picture was more to point out that there is no shade on the beach there. There is nowhere to get shade. If you think the teachers are going to have enough umbrellas to provide shade for everyone, I think you're being optimistic.

If they're only going there to go to the beach there'll be no let up from the sun. There is no shade. Whether you're in Margate or Greece no kid should be spending hours on the beach when it's over 30deg with no option of shade. That's just completely irresponsible.

The air is different????

What the actual fuckety fuck???

Indeed. Is there a big bubble around the UK that has different air to "abroad"? Margate is 50km from the French coast, at what point does the "abroad air" start?

WTF475878237NC · 18/07/2022 09:46

There's no shade at all on that beach by the looks of it.

No, going to the beach is crazy and I'd be amazed if the school go ahead with it.

So you go on holiday and sit in an air conditioned hotel room all day?

At the beach there will be sea breeze and can cool off in the water

CallOnMe · 17/07/2022 21:59

Mines at the zoo tomorrow and they’ve got a 45 minute walk each way to get there from the train station.

We’re in Cornwall so not as hot as some places but I was hoping they’d cancel the trip or book a coach to take them straight there and back.
I don’t want her missing out by not letting her go.

Chester zoo has closed so check it's still open

No she never went. She went to the park with her friends yesterday. Its about 30 min by bus. She said the travel in the heat was horrible and then she felt ill in the park. She does not seem to bothered. We will probably go in the school holidays when we are able to have more control of the shade and can go in the water. Ect

Wish ours were . When ever my kids have been in school trips by coach. They always get off the coach sweaty and hot. The adults are the same. I don't get why though. Maybe they use older coaches or somthing I don't know. But its always the same

These weather threads have truly brought out the sarcastic arseholes. I'm sure COBRA meetings are called and red alerts are given for no good reason Hmm

Kent isn’t meant to be getting that hot although still low 30s. As long as they know to reapply sun lotion, wear a hat and drink lots they should be ok. I’m sure the staff will look out for them.

My kent says 39 tomorrow

sure trip will be cancelled

CecilyP · 18/07/2022 10:41

Her thoughts were echoed by a Twitter user, who wrote: “No idea why but when it is even only 25C in Britain feels a lot hotter than it does at well above 35C elsewhere.”

i don’t think that’s true. I was in Italy in July before lockdown, 35C and spent most of the trip rushing from one bit of shade to the next. The Being on an open beach with no shade would have been a nightmare.

It’s the shade that’s the variable. Beaches abroad have sunshades. As far as I’m aware, Margate does not!

EV117 · 18/07/2022 10:56

Surely they head there in the morning and then need to head back by 1 or 2 o’clock. When we reach the top temperatures they’ll be on an air conditioned coach, I don’t see what the big deal is really.

No, but if you’re on holiday you can go to the beach early and cool down in your hotel room should it get too hot. These kids have no room to go back to and, as OP has said, they are not allowed to swim.

twordle · 18/07/2022 11:03

🤔?? the mixed & mostly positive responses to this when I got flamed for considering a trip to the coast today on another thread!!

I don't go on holiday to places that are 30+ degrees to be honest, and I don't take my kids to beaches with no shade in very high temperatures.

I definitely wouldn't take a whole load of children to a beach 90 minutes drive away with no shade and keep them out of the water, in extreme temperatures.
