Cookiecrumble22 · 17/07/2022 21:16

Dd is meant to be going to the beach tomorrow with the school by coach. I really do not want her to go. But she really wants to. I don't think its a good idea at all. She's 12 incase it's relivent.

None of them should be going

AppleKatie · 17/07/2022 22:06

i would be amazed if they would be allowed to swim in the sea on a school trip so I would be worried about lack of shade and inability to cook off. I’d be surprised if the school actually go ahead.

AppleKatie · 17/07/2022 22:07

*cool although they might cook too!

monsterastuckiosa · 17/07/2022 22:08

All the UK tourists here on holiday where I live (hot country) are at the beach with their kids in 30 degree heat ALL the time – is it the bus you're worried about?

rookiemere · 17/07/2022 22:08

Unless there is a specific health concern, can't you leave the school to make the decision?
She's 12, of course she wants to go on the trip with her mates, but school know what the forecasts are as well.

savehannah · 17/07/2022 22:10

I'd say it very much depends if they are going to let them go in the sea or not. I live at the coast and will be going to the beach every hot day to swim in the sea. But sitting on the beach where there is little to now shade without going in the sea is a recipe for heatstroke.

But health and safety wise I can't see a school allowing a large number of 12 year olds to go in the sea. It would be far too risky as teachers can't possibly make sure everyone is safe. Especially if these are kids who are not used to swimming in the sea. Margate beach is fairly safe as it's very flat so doesn't get deep for ages. But I still can't see sea swimming getting past the H&S plan.

I think the air in the UK is different to air abroad when it's hot?

But yes it was mainly the travel on the coach. Last I knew air con on a coach is not that great.

No they won't be allowed to swim . Socks abd shoes off for a shallow paddle at the most

Whilst it might be lovely at the beach, as a teacher with school coach experience, there is no way I’d be going anywhere near a school coach in this weather. They never have functioning air con. They often break down. If you have to stop, the one sun roof providing a tiny bit of air, ceases to function. I’m not an anxious person but the time I thought I was going to have a panic attack was when our coach stopped in traffic on an averagely warm day and I was stuck at the back of the coach. Only the responsibility to calm down the kids and keep them safe stopped me from losing it.

hesttreat · 17/07/2022 22:15

Who told you this and why not that great

I'd let her go.

WorkEvent · 17/07/2022 22:19

I’ve just looked at three forecasts for Margate and none of them are above 29 degrees tomorrow. The coach will likely be air conditioned and she can take a couple of frozen bottles of water on the journey to keep cool. Hat, sun cream, lots of drinks and a firm talking to about being sensible with reapplying cream and staying hydrated and she’ll be fine.

FarmerRefuted · 17/07/2022 22:21

Workyticket · 17/07/2022 21:30

Mine is at the beach with school tomorrow

North east so not as hot as down south - and they'll walk there and back

I trust the staff to head back to school if it gets too hot for them

I'll slather him in sun cream and he'll wear a hat etc

I wonder if ours are at the same school..... Also North East and walking there, school sent a message this afternoon saying that it's going ahead but if anything changes they'll let us know as soon as possible (knowing their usual "prompt" communication, it'll be roughly ten minutes after DC has already left for school!).

School reckon it'll only be 21C although the weather is saying 30C, hopefully they'll have a bit breeze as they're not being allowed in the water.

The air is different? What does that even mean?
You’re being precious OP, let her go, she will have a great time. No better place to be in this amazing weather!

Why?

I bet most of the posters on here go on holiday to places much hotter than here!

I wondered that as well . Thunk I was hoping the coaches might be better now. But it seems not. I think I'm going to tell her she can't go . She will be upset I think . But I don't want her to end up ill with heat stroke .

Margate has a red weather alert so definitely not.

But if OP lives 90 minutes away there's a red weather alert where she is, too. If it's London, then Margate is actually forecast to be around 4 degrees cooler.

UK tends to be humid as well as hot which is why it feels so stifling as soon as it starts to heat up, our buildings are also designed to retain heat rather than repel it.

Soggycrisps · 17/07/2022 22:24

Let her go, it will be fun. The best place to be when it's hot is on the beach. A paddle will cool them down.

im not even sure if this is genuine.

Just send her in with sun cream, a hat and a water bottle.

Quia · 17/07/2022 22:25

Trip to the seaside sounds a great idea. It'll be cooler at the coast. Make sure she has a hat, suncream and enough to drink, and encourage her to sit in the shade as much as possible.

Agree with this.

I presume all the people who are saying don't go, haven't been abroad. Or if they have they stay indoors on their holiday instead of going to the pool / beach if the temperature is in its 30s

Why is that any different?

RonaLisa · 17/07/2022 22:26

@Cookiecrumble22 Poor DD.

Don't take MN advice. These are the same people who were batshit about Covid and People Might Die. Now they are being batshit about a bit of very hot weather.

I am 51. We all survived hot weather in the 70s. I suppose it's so long since we had any properly hot weather (despite what the climate change gloom-mongers say) that people are just becoming hysterical.

This, would you think twice about your child going to the beach in Spain in this weather?
As long as bus is air conditioned I see no problem

Amazed by these responses - MN is getting crazier by the day! Provided your daughter wears a sunhat, suncream, sunglasses, and spends a lot of time in the sea (what else are they going to do in this heat?) than she'll be absolutely fine. Don't make her miss out on a fun day with her friends. It'll be hot wherever you are and at least the coast usually has a breeze.

I know I was genuinely laughing out loud!!

Do these people never go abroad!

The hysterical Pearl clutching is fascinating to read!
