Dd is meant to be going to the beach tomorrow with the school by coach. I really do not want her to go. But she really wants to. I don't think its a good idea at all. She's 12 incase it's relivent.

Spain, where you can go sit on a shaded patio area or inside an air conditioned building if it gets too much. Where you can hop in the pool or into the sea to cool off. Where you can strip down to your swimsuit, get an ice cream, head back to your room for a siesta.

Beach in the UK on a school trip where you're not allowed in the sea, have no access to a shaded area or air con, and have got to keep your clothes on.

Yup. Totally the same.

Oh wow!!! You’re seriously stopping her from going to the beach on a hot day??? I’ve heard it all now. Poor kids these days!!!

Soggycrisps · 17/07/2022 22:33

@BlueWhat @ArialAnna I really wonder if the op has name changed just to reply to her own post. I can't understand why so many people would be against going to the beach on a hot day.

amicissimma · 17/07/2022 22:34

Why would you keep your DD in a hot stuffy classroom, or at home in a warm house when you could send her in an air conditioned coach to a breezy, cooler beach? By 12 I would expect her to know how to keep herself hydrated, creamed and hatted, specially with friends and teachers to remind her.

Why would you stop her going out and having fun with her friends when they'll be in more appropriate conditions for the weather?

My DCs are adults now, but I've never heard of a coach breaking down on a school trip, neither for my DC or those of anyone I know.

When I was in Australia everyone headed for the beach when the weather warmed up. Best place to be in 45° C.

Does she go many places in the UK?

RonaLisa · 17/07/2022 22:36

@Cookiecrumble22 I've not been abroad since 2005, btw, but still think you are being batshit.

Actually the coach breaking down is reminiscent of the Covid threads where if you went out with Covid in your car it would break down and you would infect everyone.

UrsulaPandress · 17/07/2022 22:37

The air is different????

What the actual fuckety fuck???

User8394721 · 17/07/2022 22:38

Actually the coach breaking down is reminiscent of the Covid threads where if you went out with Covid in your car it would break down and you would infect everyone.

I also remember that if you went out in your car at all, even without covid, you were prone to cause a massive pile up, using up emergency services and forcing people to come and rescue you who would then have to attend hospital and therefore catch covid there.

And therefore also kill their grandmother.

LaughingCat · 17/07/2022 22:40

I’d let her go - it’ll be cooler at the beach and she can have a lovely time. The school wouldn’t take her if there was a chance of heatstroke (most of them are utterly paranoid about health and safety).

When she’s sat at home getting all the Snapchats of her friends having a great time, you’ll be the one to get it in the neck (PS, I was taken to Greece in a heatwave at the age of 2 months and survived - your daughter will be just fine).

There’s also LOADS of shaded spots on Margate beach. Just make sure she has enough 10p pieces for the arcades 😁

coffeecupsandfairylights · 17/07/2022 22:40

I have not berm abroad since I was about 10. My dd has never Been abroad. So no some people don't.

But I'm sure you still understand that millions of Brits travel abroad every year and sit in temperatures in the mid-high thirties.

29 degrees by the sea with a lovely breeze, probably an ice cream or two and an air conditioned coach journey sounds like bliss compared to being cooped up in a stuffy classroom!

@Cookiecrumble22 Poor DD.

Don't take MN advice. These are the same people who were batshit about Covid and People Might Die. Now they are being batshit about a bit of very hot weather.

I am 51. We all survived hot weather in the 70s. I suppose it's so long since we had any properly hot weather (despite what the climate change gloom-mongers say) that people are just becoming hysterical.

Do you mean the 1976 heatwave where hundreds of people died? Very naive to say we “all survived” when so many people didn’t.

CecilyP · 17/07/2022 22:42

Not this hot, we didn’t! Temperatures of 41 forecast for some areas on Tuesday are completely unprecedented in the U.K. However, having said that the forecast for Margate tomorrow is around 30 so more typical of hottest day of the year type weather. So I would let her go. It’s still possible that the school will cancel but if it goes ahead I don’t see why your Dd should miss out.

I stand corrected you've not name changed. I'm just genuinely shocked that so many people think it's a bad idea to go to the beach on a hot day.

UrsulaPandress · 17/07/2022 22:44

More people die from cold than heat.

Eat drink and be Merry.

But the problem is the kids won’t be allowed in the sea. To just play on the sand in blazing heat is bloody miserable.

Holidaydreamingagain · 17/07/2022 22:45

All the crazies of mumsnet are out tonight. So long as she has a hat cream and plenty of water she’ll be fine. Far better than sitting at home. Coaches have air con and the beach will be more breezy

KalvinPhillipsBoots · 17/07/2022 22:46

The responses here are so predictable, do you think the world should stop just because it's hot? Over dramatic as usual.

There is a big tidal pool that you can only stand up in (not deep enough to swim).

Would the school be bringing parasols?
