To think 7.30 is too early?

Council have gardeners out on stand on mowers, and with strimmers on the grass right underneath peoples windows at 7.30am! Slept with windows open last night because of heat and am not impressed at the sheer level of noise of both machines going off at once at this time. I thought it had to be after 8 (which to me personally is still too early but I don't make the rules) more than anything else it was just a horrible way to wake up.

You would hate to live where I do, OP. I live next to the Midland Mainline (and I mean right next to it) and all their essential maintenance takes place at night. It is deafening! But when else are they supposed to fix things?

VerbenaGirl · 12/07/2022 22:00

We’ve just been advised our bin collections start at 4.30am tomorrow, due to the heat. Not unreasonable in the circumstances.

Crinklecuts · 12/07/2022 22:06

Some people work night shifts too. There is never a good time.

onlythreenow · 12/07/2022 22:24

YABU - would you rather they did the work in the heat of the day, just so it doesn't inconvenience you? Apart from shift workers who on earth is asleep at 7.30 am, in mid-summer especially, anyway?

mumwon · 12/07/2022 22:37

at least they are cutting the grass... if it were your next door neighbour you would have grounds for complaint - but in our area it reach 32c so I would cut the workers some slack

whynotwhatknot · 12/07/2022 23:52

atm i wouldnt mind if they started now its too bloody hot to be out all day

TaranTulasForSamhain · 12/07/2022 23:53

Standard summer hours for Parks and Verges teams in our area is 7-4 so starting the cutting at 7.30 is normal. Hours haven't changed due to the heat either. They are on very tight schedules to get work done.

EssexSerpent · 12/07/2022 23:55

No issue with this. Can imagine it’s mildly irritating but define standard working hours that fits everyone…

Winkydink · 13/07/2022 00:05

YABU. Perfectly reasonable time to do work on a weekday, in a heatwave

AlwaysLatte · 13/07/2022 01:12

When it's not a school day, and now that our two are 14 and 12, most of us are still in bed at 7.30. But working in cooler temperatures is the most important thing so I wouldn't complain.

Have highest council tax in the county. We pay through the nose for it actually

It's too eearly. Anything before 9 is. But I'm a sleeeep person.a bed person.others who don't mind being up won't mind
But it's too early.
I'd maybe give them a rope if only because doing it later would melt them. And yes i no peopkr are working all day everywhere but even though it's their job I'd want to get that shit done before the peak of heat too if I could.i think.
So if it's a one off.
But no,do not wake the bear.

Benjispruce4 · 13/07/2022 07:31

Noisy work shouldn’t start until 9 am imo. Regardless of whether you’re awake or not, nobody wants high level noise before then.

ApplesandBunions · 13/07/2022 08:02

I absolutely want high level noise at 7.30am in unusually hot weather as opposed to the warmest hours of the day.

SunflowerGardens · 13/07/2022 08:12

Tell me you don't have young children or pets without telling me you don't have young children or pets Grin

In an ideal world maybe (although shift workers and babies trying to sleep during the day would be disturbed if they were working during "conventional" hours) but in reality practical outdoor jobs have to be done at the most suitable time for the work/workers, not everyone else. In my previous post I mentioned that network rail occassionally use heavy noisy machinery at 2 or 3 in the morning. I can imagine 99% of people (possibly including the workers themselves) don't particularly want it then, but I assume it's to minimise disruption to the train service and on the roads next to the railway. In the winter builders/roofers etc often start at 8 and finish at 3 because they need daylight to do the job. In the OPS case it's sensible to get practical jobs done outside the hottest times of the day.

They've been building east west rail pretty much at the bottom of our garden for last few years. I don't notice the noise. Road closures on the other hand

Not early for a weekday at all, bin collectors are often out earlier than this.

Marvellousmadness · 13/07/2022 09:22

Oh boohoo

Marvellousmadness · 13/07/2022 09:23

Bhahaha. Yeah right op has kids.
And they never everrrr wake her up at 7.30 🙄

broughtitbutneedgone · 13/07/2022 10:12

It's one off presumably and you're lucky
To sleep in beyond 7:30am in a week day

itsthesoundofthepolice · 13/07/2022 10:41

Mumsnet: where people all live in the same place with the same weather conditions and all work the same hours.

@pogostickplastique I feel you. The gardeners here always park outside my house, stand about revving petrol strimmers and chatting/shouting at 7am which feels like the middle of the night when I finish work at 2am
Its not essential work so it should be done during the permitted hours IMO

I wake them at 8 actually - sorry yours are broken and don't sleep.

7:30am isn't early, so YABU. And YABVU to complain about it during a heatwave when workers are trying to avoid the hottest part of the day.

rainbowandglitter · 13/07/2022 18:14

Op you're quite rude. Why does it mean children are 'broken' if they're awake before 8am? My child is on the school bus at 7.40am so up way before 8am and not broken.
