To think 7.30 is too early?

Council have gardeners out on stand on mowers, and with strimmers on the grass right underneath peoples windows at 7.30am! Slept with windows open last night because of heat and am not impressed at the sheer level of noise of both machines going off at once at this time. I thought it had to be after 8 (which to me personally is still too early but I don't make the rules) more than anything else it was just a horrible way to wake up.

I think that's too early too.

ILoveYoga · 12/07/2022 20:02

Given it is a week day, no problem with that Considering the heat, makes it even more reasonable to start early.

LilacPoppy · 12/07/2022 20:04

I am sick of the whining and pandering to people because of “the heat” it’s not especially hot , British people are just ridiculous at the slightest bit of sun. It’s 32 here and a nice normal sunny day.
The council workers are not altruistic volunteers they are being paid and should start at a reasonable time.

This is a ridiculous take.

Most British people are quite unused to 32 degree heat, much less doing manual labour in it. It is actually especially hot for Britain: the fact that you personally do not find it so is completely unimportant compared to this reality.

Because 32 degree heat is especially and unusually hot in Britain, it follows that it's sensible for us to take our cue from countries that know more about extreme heat than we do. That is, to work when temperatures are cooler where possible, as an alternative to doing it at the hotter parts of the day.

ApplesandBunions · 12/07/2022 20:17

Oh I forgot to mention, we're also in the middle of a labour shortage. It's not so easy to completely disregard your staff's welfare any more. Obliging workers to do objectively idiotic things like do their hard manual labour in the hotter parts of the day rather than the cooler hours, because hey they're being paid, is a risky business when they might well find better gigs available elsewhere.

XingMing · 12/07/2022 20:22

Hot is over 40C. Especially if it's humid too. Fortunately it doesn't happen often in the UK. Wear fewer clothes, start early and finish early.

The weather app says its going to be hot on Monday at 33 degrees.

And they can't wear fewer clothes when they are using machinery/getting bins in. Health and safety

If my workplace was 32 degrees I'd go home and I'm not a manual labourer

Damnautocorrect · 12/07/2022 20:26

i don’t blame them.

not ideal, but special circumstances and all that.

AlwaysLatte · 12/07/2022 20:28

Hot is over 40C.
It's not rocket science to explain that different people feel the heat at different temperatures, and the humidity will vary enormously, affecting those temperatures further.

drawacircleroundit · 12/07/2022 20:29

I'd love to be able to sleep in until 7.30am. One man's steak is another man's mutton, and all that.

Yes, honestly, arguing over what's hot is pointless considering there's no right answer and all anyone can do is state their opinion. The more important point here is that it's much hotter than normal for the UK, meaning the population aren't used to it and life isn't set up to accommodate it.

XingMing · 12/07/2022 20:37

I spent my 20s in NYC, when 38-40 at 99 humidity was commonplace in August. I must have become hardened to it. I learned to love getting soaked to the skin in thurderstorms!

CambsAlways · 12/07/2022 20:54

It wouldn’t worry me in the slightest I’m up at 6am

Goodgriefisitginfizzoclock · 12/07/2022 21:03

This reminds me of trying to book work in for our plumbers and electricians , can I have first appointment of day, yes I say 8 o’clock, ooh no that’s too early can they come at 9.30, err no, it will be second appointment I can’t say what time depends on how long first appointment takes as my crystal ball doesn’t allow me to know what needs to be done to the faulty socket/tap/light etc so if you need exact time get up to let them in at 8 o’clock !! Have heart in this heat avoiding working in mid day heat is a must, or would you rather they got paid to not work, or overheated and just sucked it up so you could sleep till 8. I refer to earlier post ok for them to get up early and grit road in winter. Rant over

TokyoTen · 12/07/2022 21:14

I think 7am is fine -.especially in the current heat wave (depending on where you are).

uhtredbebbanburg · 12/07/2022 21:22

Our bins get collected at 6:30am every week. It doesn’t bother me, I would rather have it done then not.

Palmfrond · 12/07/2022 21:28

What’re ye going to do, call the council?
Mate, WE ARE THE COUNCIL!

Turn this on its head. Instead of getting worked up, get a couple of small bottles of water and go and offer them to the guys/girls. You will feel good and so will they.Just imagine if one of your dc or your DH was doing a physical job in this heat, how grateful they would be at the kindness of a stranger. Everyone got ice lollies or bottled water at mine today. The bin men, postie, Ocado man and the Amazon driver. Too much negativity in the world at the moment. Spread some kindness.

Ok. I’ll tell my body that. Anything over 25 I start fainting and get sun stroke resulting in me being sick and headaches.
some people can handle the heat. Others can’t

SunniestSunshine · 12/07/2022 21:48

No it's not early.

Most people who work are up by 7.30 unless they work shifts.

A lot of people start work at 8am.

I'm surprised you think this is worth asking!

Here, our bin men arrive around 7am every week.

Also, with the dawn chorus and sunshine, I'm awake by 6am every day anyway.

You can't wear fewer clothes if you have to wear PPE like they would have to

There are rules (H&S) about temperatures inside workplaces.

Grass cutting is not one of them.

Silly comparison.
