To think 7.30 is too early?

Council have gardeners out on stand on mowers, and with strimmers on the grass right underneath peoples windows at 7.30am! Slept with windows open last night because of heat and am not impressed at the sheer level of noise of both machines going off at once at this time. I thought it had to be after 8 (which to me personally is still too early but I don't make the rules) more than anything else it was just a horrible way to wake up.

7.30 is fine with me too. Who sleeps after 7am except shift workers?

They need to get started early when it's this hot.

Eh?

Plenty of people 🙄

Bastard birds had me awake from 4.30am so 7.30 feels like lunchtime

😂 Same!

7:30 would be fine for me too even tho on the weekend I’d prefer if everyone started their yard work around 9

Maverickess · 12/07/2022 11:04

I work shifts so 7.30 for me some days is the middle of the night and for others half an hour into my shift.
I'd be annoyed at being woken up - who isn't annoyed at being woken up with a start? But I'd understand that work needs to get done and that in weather like this, it's preferred that it's done around the heat of the day rather than during it, for the health and safety of the people doing it.

Unfortunately, they're human beings that may well have some ill effects from working in the temperatures we've been forecast, outside, all day and they can't work in silence either. Makes sense to disturb the few people (and I include myself in that) to get a job done safely, than include every possible scenario of who is sleeping at what time to give a limited time to get stuff done, during the hottest part of the day.

Like it or not, most people are up around, getting ready for work or school, leaving to get there or already there at 7.30 on a weekday, and none of those things can be done in complete silence. I imagine the time those workers got up themselves to get to be outside your window at 7.30, was pretty early, at least (hopefully) they're not your neighbour and disturbing you by getting themselves ready and leaving for work very early to provide the service they're paid to.

mbosnz · 12/07/2022 11:04

I hope you're feeling better soon OP.

One point re 'why are they mowing' - as much as anything, long dry grass is a fire risk. It needs doing as a matter of urgency.

mam0918 · 12/07/2022 11:05

once a EXTREMELY loud council road sweeper made its way very slowly (like 1mph) the full length and back down our very long street at... 4.30 AM.

Still have know idea why, the only time I have ever seen a road sweeper round here aswell... I had a baby that didnt sleep well to begin with so was not happy.

Most people lol.

You sound like my old friend who was always baffled why she was the only one up at 6am, its really not normal unless you have to be somewhere.

Majoritively people only get up between 6-8am if they have to for their job, baby or some other event (like catching a flight etc...) most people will of their own free will sleep until 8-10am naturally.

Glitterspy · 12/07/2022 11:15

Eh? Be grateful someone else is mowing for you?

bellabasset · 12/07/2022 11:27

I can understand that starting up noisy machinery wasn't pleasant, it wakes you with a start. I'm not sure how hot it is where you are but they may be starting earlier in the heat, think the dustmen start at 6 some days

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 12/07/2022 11:36

Yeah it is a bit early @pogostickplastique but as has been said, it's understandable in a heatwave. My NDN was banging and clonking around in her garden at 7am today, and woke me up out of a deep sleep. Fucking bitch. Angry joking.. a bit... Grin

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 12/07/2022 11:42

@MintJulia

Who sleeps after 7am?

Many people. Confused On the rare occasion I am up at 7am, and go out into the garden/for a walk, I see hardly ANYone. Most curtains are closed. 8am, more people, but 7am, most people are still in the land of nod.

Why do people who are up at 5.30-6.30am or so assume every fucker and his wife is up at the same time? Confused This reminds me of a bloke who used to come and pick up one of our neighbours because they worked at the same factory. Started 7.30am, and came at 7.00am, and beep beep beeeeeped his fucking horn at 7am to let his know he was here. Hmm Not EVERYONE is up at that time, just because YOU are.

Harridance · 12/07/2022 10:39

Hotinit, it wouldn't do them any harm to start 30 min later either

Speaking as someone who works outside, 30 minutes makes a massive difference!

TenoringBehind · 12/07/2022 13:02

Normally yes, 7:30 is too early. In a heatwave it’s understandable.

pogostickplastique · 12/07/2022 10:12

@LindaEllen except other parts of the village are charged an additional service charge on top of their council tax for them the mow their communal gardens - last summer by the time they mowed them it was near the end of the summer and the grass was ridiculous in the ones people couldn't mow. Others had mowed it themselves despite being forced to pay for it. So yes I do think it's random.

They will only cut the amount of times they are paid for. So if they are only paid to cut it twice then they will cut it twice. If people want it cut more often they will have to pay more.
So not random at all.

Considering how hot it will be today, I would have no issue with 7:30am. I have two cats so sleeping in until 730am is a thing of the past 😂

I have two cats - I'm fortunate in that they wait patiently until I'm ready to get up - which was 9am today 😁

But no - I don't think 7.30am is too early for this.

Threeboysandadog · 12/07/2022 14:41

We live next to a golf course and the mowers are out long before 7.30 even at weekends. I’m just glad It’s their job and not mine.

Itloggedmeoutagain · 12/07/2022 14:56

pogostickplastique · 12/07/2022 09:12

Maybe u just wish they hadn't chosen to start the mower right under my open bedroom window with no warning so that I didn't have to start my day climbing down off the ceiling in fright.

What type of warning would you like? They could knock on your door and bring you a cup of tea?
It's a working day
It's hot
Maybe they should have started later and been uncomfortable in the heat so you could have a lie in.

justfiveminutes · 12/07/2022 15:11

I'm surprised you're annoyed about being woken 30 mins earlier than you wanted, at a perfectly reasonable weekday time, by public sector staff doing their jobs, possibly a little earlier than usual to get ahead on such a hot day. I wouldn't be thrilled but I don't think I'd be annoyed either. It's part of living in a community I suppose.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 12/07/2022 16:25

We had a message that bins are being emptied from 5am due to the heatwave. Seems sensible to me even as someone who loves my sleep.

SarahSissions · 12/07/2022 16:27

Most manual outdoor workers are moving their start times earlier at the moment because of the heat. It’s fine

I don't even know why they're doing it. Around my way they come out regularly and mow the hell out of all the grass, then leave all the dead bits all over the place. What they can't cut they spray with pesticide. All we have is loads of yellow & brown dying grass.

OmaSwims · 12/07/2022 18:15

We've had a notice that the bins will be collected from 6am this week, because of the heat. I think that's fair enough

GetThatHelmetOn · 12/07/2022 18:18

Honestly, with this heat you may consider being grateful that you grass is still cut.

I know a woman who has been waiting for the council gardeners for so long her grass is almost 2 feet high!

Who said it was my grass?? Just because my house is adjacent to the street doesn't mean it's mine?

Council have gardeners out. Stop there. Just stop. You are privileged that your council does this.

pogostickplastique · 12/07/2022 18:23

@ZarquonsSandals I know - there's no care taken either. Someone at the school was saying her peg basket had fallen off the washing line in their communal garden and the gardeners just mowed over it and destroyed it. Sending all the bits of plastic scattering all over the garden. These are the same people who pay an extra service charge every month to cover their gardening. God forbid anyone moans though.
