To think 7.30 is too early?

Council have gardeners out on stand on mowers, and with strimmers on the grass right underneath peoples windows at 7.30am! Slept with windows open last night because of heat and am not impressed at the sheer level of noise of both machines going off at once at this time. I thought it had to be after 8 (which to me personally is still too early but I don't make the rules) more than anything else it was just a horrible way to wake up.

If any consolation, OP, I live near a pub, which has regular deliveries at 4.30AM. The road is very narrow so the lorry has to reverse down it, beeping as it does so. I don't think it's unreasonable of them, though, as they're just earning a living like everyone else.

We had a message that bins are being emptied from 5am due to the heatwave. Seems sensible to me even as someone who loves my sleep.

Actually that's quite good that they let you know.

If I knew they were coming at 5am, then I'd be expecting it, and wouldn't mind. If they just came at 5am and I wasn't expecting them til their usual time of 8.30am-ish, I'd be a bit Hmm but I wouldn't complain to anyone, I'd just moan silently. 🤐😂

ZarquonsSandals · 12/07/2022 18:25

sst1234 the 'gardeners' are to mowing as Boris Johnson is to honesty. They wouldn't know horticulture if they fell over it.
It doesn't need cutting unless it is in a playground or overhanging and obstructing a path.
They just mow the lot - bottles, crisp packets and all.

I won't let them mow outside my house.

rainbowandglitter · 12/07/2022 18:34

They can start cutting your grass from 7am so they've done nothing wrong.

Saracen · 12/07/2022 18:35

As a one-off in a heatwave okay, so long as they don't make a habit of it. We have bin collections from much earlier in the morning than that, though admittedly it's only one day a week and you know when it's coming.

ToadiesCouzin · 12/07/2022 18:39

I think even if the "rules" are usually 8am-7pm, give the heat wave 7.30am is reasonable. They need to do a job and they need to be safe whilst doing it. Being woken up at 7.30am isn't going to do anyone any harm.

The rules state they can start from 7am. My dh manages all this at our local council.

Sallypally0 · 12/07/2022 18:43

They cannot do this sort of manual work in the hottest part of the day.

07:30 is perfectly reasonable.

ToadiesCouzin · 12/07/2022 18:43

Even more reason not to complain then! Tbh, I'd forgive them an even earlier start if they have to work outside in this heat. I do not envy anyone who has to do a manual outside job in a heatwave, they can start at 6am as far as I'm concerned!

Palamon · 12/07/2022 18:44

7:30 is not too early.

4am however is <shakes fists at the 900 birds in my garden that my husband feeds>

Council have gardeners out. Stop there. Just stop. You are privileged that your council does this.

Have highest council tax in the county. We pay through the nose for it actually

They are not supposed to start this work until 8am and that is why you should ring the department to complain about this.

Benjispruce4 · 12/07/2022 19:03

I have.a neighbour’s who gets an Ocado delivery at 6.49 on SUNDAY morning!!!! Outrageous.

Benjispruce4 · 12/07/2022 19:03

6.40

WhimsicalGubbins · 12/07/2022 19:10

It’s slightly different rules for different areas, I think the majority of the UK is 8am, but around our way it’s 7.30am-which to be honest is fine by me because I’m up at 7 to get ready for work anyway.
To be fair to them, like others have pointed out, the heat and the sun means the earlier they do it, the better for their safety. It’s relatively cool at 7.30 compared to 10am

Now this would drive me mad! Sunday is the only day I can sleep in past 7am

chocolatemademefat · 12/07/2022 19:12

How can you sleep in this heat anyway?😂

Cervinia · 12/07/2022 19:13

Come on, grass cutting is like every three months by the council, it costs you nowt extra and your area look better and is over in a jiffy and won’t happen again for ages. Get a flippin grip.

I googled it and apparently the time to carry out 'unavoidable work' is 8am - 7pm on weekdays. They obviously started much earlier than 7.30 as our end of the street is normally nearer the end of their 'route'

They only cut it at random intervals when they feel like it anyway so no one would and noticed if they'd not bothered because of the heat rather than start so early.

Check you’ve googled the most up to date info because I think in most areas, controls on noise levels run from 11pm-7pm, so the council wouldn’t be at fault for starting the work after this time.

LIZS · 12/07/2022 19:19

Are they starting early to avoid the heat of the day? A neighbouring council is doing early morning bin collections this week.

FrustratedC0ffeeDrinker · 12/07/2022 19:20

Under the law there are no restrictions on hours/days for commercial noise, unless these are restricted via planning permission. Day time hours are generally accepted as being between 7am and 6/7pm. Although the noise may be annoying, if it’s a one off and done for the health and safety of workers then I don’t think it’s unreasonable. It all boils down to neighbourly give and take.

Sorry, meant 11pm to 7am.

XingMing · 12/07/2022 19:52

Don't retire to southern Europe then, where work and school starts at 7.00 in hot weather, and finishes by 1.30, so the hottest hours can be spent quietly in the shade. Shops reopen after 5.00 pm, until about 8.30. It's too hot to work in the afternoon.

Harridance · 12/07/2022 19:54

Our local council is 8am start time for noisy works

alesscolleen · 12/07/2022 19:57

Didn't read all of the replies.. but curious what time does OP usually wake up on a weekday/schoolday?
