Simply because he is super rich and his wife evaded tax while we all struggle with the cost of living? How can they let him stand?

This is not a racist thread btw.

@WatchoRulo that fine but you don't get to enact tax regulation for the rest of us. However, what do you think his response would be if the British public say demanded that non-doms become liable for inheritance tax......or say if someone suggested that really if you live in N10 you cant have a non-dom status? Because it was Rishi's job to make tax legislation

WatchoRulo · 10/07/2022 11:09

I agree, it has a place for people who are genuinely temporary expatriates.
I get the impression this is exactly how Rishi and his wife see themselves - very much a temporary fixture. He didn’t seem keen to give up his US green card. All of which is perfectly fine of course , but we are entitled to question their Long term commitment and just how invested they can be in the success or failure of their policies.

alphapie · 10/07/2022 11:09

Tbh it's a best of a bad bunch scenario.

Although I am 50/50 whether he would lost them the next GE. On the one hand he is polished and slightly more moderate politically than most of the party, however his falling out with BJ was down to him wanting to not financially prop up the nation anymore which might turn those new blue voters from the North

I agree, it has a place for people who are genuinely temporary expatriates. If you're just using it as a fig leaf, or if you're non-dom/Green Card while holding a position which should require a more permanent commitment to this country, then it's a problem.

In relation to Javid and according to himself this morning on the BBC, he was a non-don while he worked and lived abroad. That’s what I was referring to. Which seem reasonable. Unlike Sunak’s wife, I agree, who lives in North Yorkshire.

AllyCatTown · 10/07/2022 11:12

It’s like someone on another thread said, for many the best candidate for the job would single mother of six Sandra, 46, who hasn’t worked in 25 years. Because you must be poor to be virtuous. Never mind competent

I think very few people actually think that. A bigger issue in perceptions in the general population is viewing a wealthy person (no matter how they arrived to be wealthy) as competent just because they are wealthy.

BalloonsAndWhistles · 10/07/2022 11:08

I personally would quite like him to be the PM.

Dons hard hat.

Why do you want him to be PM?

astoundedgoat · 10/07/2022 11:13

The fact that he is personally rich (through his wife) is neither here nor there, but doesn't it look more like he is a trophy project of his father in law, Narayan Murthy? I might be mis-remembering, but when he graduated and married his wife, Murthy set up him with a hedge fund, then set him up to run as an MP, and now Murthy gets the perfectly high status husband for his daughter in the shape of a Prime Minister?

I'm going to disagree with Sunak on most of his political beliefs, so I don't believe he's any worse than most of the candidates, but it feels like he is a highly intentional and perfectly executed project by his father in law. If he hadn't married Akshata Murthy he'd probably just have had a successful, but quiet financial career.

Not sure if that makes him a better or worse candidate for PM, but it does seem driven by strategy rather than passion, from the outside.

Why do you think he would be good? Genuinely interested.

It still looks bad for him though as it’s supposed to be for people who plan to live abroad and not return to the UK in any serious capacity for the rest of their life. The whole thing should be scrapped imo anyway. Most other countries don’t have it.

You think Sunak fucked up global supply chains and invaded Ukraine resulting in massive inflation in energy and food prices? Really? LOL

gbliu87767 · 10/07/2022 11:18

@astoundedgoat precisely that is essentially all it is. But why the British public would go for that is beyond me

Fairyliz · 10/07/2022 11:19

So what level of wealth is acceptable? If the average ft salary is £30k is anything up to £100k alright? What about £250k or £750k?
Who exactly would decide, probably be a different figure for an unemployed person in Hull to a London professional.

😂😂

balalake · 10/07/2022 11:20

Unreasonable to not want him as Tory leader because of his personal situation.

Reasonable to not want the accidental chancellor to be leader and Prime Minister because of his decisions and policies over the last three years. Does not understand business, the way the economy can and should function, and then the nature of the support post July/August 2020 was nowhere near as effective and good as it should have been.

ApplesandBunions · 10/07/2022 11:21

SnowyLamb · 10/07/2022 10:36

I don't think he'll win the leadership contest. The party will understand the tax thing would be a huge disadvantage at the GE

Yes, exactly. It's one thing to explain how it was all legal, legitimate etc, but quite another to expect to be able to successfully make that argument to the electorate.

SiobhanSharpe · 10/07/2022 11:26

The rich are different, as the saying goes.
Rishi's wife Akshata is hugely, hugely wealthier than he is. I would expect their tax affairs to be completely separate and that very complicated pre-nups, trusts and similar are firmly in place regulating all their finances, mostly to protect her and her imheritance.
if any of us were in the same position as Akshata Murthy I think we'd have been strongly advised by our accountants and finance people to do much the same.
And a DH might not be privy to all the details, a state of affairs which might be approved by lots of us on here.

Making things really expensive and basic consumables not available in the shops. He's stupid and will turn us into a third world state very quickly

This just makes me give up, how do people actually think this.

He wouldn’t be my choice, in part related to the points you’ve raised. However, he’s entitled to stand and be judged on his merits.

coodawoodashooda · 10/07/2022 10:05

That story about him pretending a Sainsbury employee's car was his own passed me off. He must really think everyone is stupid.

That and not knowing how to pay contactless afterwards when paying for the said petrol* and his drink (after a pandemic where that had been the preferred form of taking money by most businesses 🤦🏻‍♀️)

*and the ".... Thirty? That's enough isn't it?" to the press/advisors. God forbid you actually helped someone out more whilst attempting to pretend you're "just a normal person with a normal car!"

Tulipvase · 10/07/2022 11:29

The fact his campaign slogan is ready4rishi is enough to put me off.

plugee · 10/07/2022 11:29

Isn't he the chancellor what does he get paid for ?

not if the world though

Seriously the half wit even I could have done a better job I reckon

what would you have done?

plugee · 10/07/2022 11:30

That story about him pretending a Sainsbury employee's car was his own passed me off.

that was stupid

CakePie · 10/07/2022 11:33

Who would you have left if you want someone with morality out of the Tory candidates...
