Simply because he is super rich and his wife evaded tax while we all struggle with the cost of living? How can they let him stand?

This is not a racist thread btw.

I'm not that bothered either. Virtually all of them are using the potential of tax cuts as a bribe to butter up the electorate and all of them ultimately want a small state with as few legal protections as possible for ordinary people. Just let's see what's left of public services as they are surreptitiously sold off to the lowest bidder. Total shit show and we have no say in it whatsoever. Not seen levelling up mentioned yet by any of the candidates funnily enough either so no doubt that will be kicked under the carpet much like the northern powerhouse was.
Sadly I've absolutely no optimism that any other party will get a look in as the country seems mindlessly welded to the tories however inept they are...

WestHamPam · 11/07/2022 09:29

Couldn’t care less about him being rich. His wife staying a non-dom showed poor political judgement but it wasn’t illegal.

I do worry that he’s a bit lacking in vision. What actually is his position on anything? Fiscally conservative, I know, but what else? Too much slick but empty marketing and not enough substance.

andi62 · 11/07/2022 10:04

They all appear useless to me, the Tories are in power but not governing, at least not good governance. They exist only to prevent "the other lot" getting in. Sunak is scary, talks of patriotism, fairness, and hard work...

  1. Patriotism:

That'll be some racist thing then

  1. Fairness

Cut taxes for the rich, cut benefits for the poor.

  1. Hard work

Like my daughter, full time as a TA, skint as fuck, some might say destitute. Fairness my fucking ass.

So here we are in 2022 still expecting a man to take responsibility for his wife's financial/tax affairs!

Marriage is a partnership which includes finance, i would expect the same to apply to any married partner, regardless of sex.

Sunak was Chancellor, so there is a surely a conflict of interest if he and his dept are responsible for tax law in this country but his close family are taking advantage of loopholes he could easily close.

This also appears to be the case with other candidates too :(

Nothing about tax evasion there. It’s interesting the lies being posted about the most prominent non-white candidate.

Please don’t make such stupid comments in order to feel good about being woke. You cheapen the antiracist cause. I am sure you can see why a chancellor of the exchequer and his wife need to be above money-grubbing schemes to avoid paying tax on massive incomes. It’s an insult to the rest of us.
But you know that.

So you equate patriotism with racism?

Views like these are the best recruiting agent for the Tories. Congratulations.

Who actually wants racists voting for them anyway ? A party full of racists. Great.

You think that 200k Tory me never are racist? Or that 358 Tory MPs are racist? Or that 13 million Tory voters are racist?

The standard of debate just goes from bad to worse.

TBF @sst1234 it was your very own leader and PM Boris Johnson who made a string of racist and sexist comments.

As he never recanted these & is still popular across the membership & the right wing press, one must make the assumption people within the Tory party agree with him.

Assume away. The Tories need allies like yourself.

Another intelligent, relevant contribution to the topic, making a point directly to illustrate nuanced thinking. Well done. Carry on. I’ll leave you to it.

All of the current candidates backed Bojo to the hilt, yourself also defended him over numerous threads, with similar pithy remarks

Its a bit rich to now try and re write history and pretend the last 3 years never happened.

The Tories need a new leader who isn't associated with BJ, Hunt, Tugenhat etc, the others are all too mired in with his corruption and will be an open goal for the opposition.

"In relation to Javid and according to himself this morning on the BBC, he was a non-don while he worked and lived abroad. That’s what I was referring to. Which seem reasonable. Unlike Sunak’s wife, I agree, who lives in North Yorkshire."

If you are non domiciled and don't live in the uk then you have no liability to uk tax - you don't claim non domicile unless you are uk resident in that year.

Paying tax on the remittance basis is hardly a money grubbing scheme. And I don’t think you get to decide who or what cheapens the anti racist cause.
people are calling into question his loyalty to the uk when he’s done nothing plenty of white Britons haven’t done before him. I think that stinks and I’m not changing my mind.

I know we are all foolish and naive when we are young but this clip really does him no favours. If you listen to the next part of that interview he then goes on to talk about how he goes into deprived inner-city state schools to talk to them about going to Oxford and then after half an hour of wittering on at the pupils he "shocks" them by announcing that actually he went to Winchester.

A) Nobody listening to his incredibly posh accent would be shocked that he went to a fancy private school and B) Why did he think sending a privileged public schoolboy into deprived state schools would actually encourage those students to apply to Oxford? Surely it would be more effective to send somebody who had actually attended a deprived state school!
