Simply because he is super rich and his wife evaded tax while we all struggle with the cost of living? How can they let him stand?

This is not a racist thread btw.

plugee · 10/07/2022 10:51

I don't know anyone who pays more tax than they have too

gbliu87767 · 10/07/2022 10:52

@Ncwinc I thought that was public knowledge.

None of them give a fig about the proletariat, all they care about is power and money. This country will be buggered in any case.

These threads really draw out some of the most considered, nuanced analysis.

I hope Javid does well.

Javid had non dom status, isn't that what Rishi's wife had?

Also pretty iffy, in his case because it looks like a fiction. I guess he'd say that at that point he genuinely intended to spend the rest of his life in the US/Singapore and then changed his mind but it's a bit whiffy. If HMRC were properly staffed I'd like them to say "oh right, let's reverse all those tax transactions made on the basis that you were moving to New York then".

Ncwinc · 10/07/2022 10:54

Apparently not to those who are dreadfully upset that Rishi Sunak held a Green Card …

What wrong with holding non-don status if you actually are non-dom?

MushMonster · 10/07/2022 10:54

I am sure the tory party can find a candidate with a blank canvas that looks remotely competent and actually aware and interested in sorting UK's current problems. Instead of more of the same shit lot that we had to endure for years now.
Colour is IRRELEVANT, and shame on all of you that keep brandishing this argument, it just proves how many people are completely unaware of how our society actually is and just live in a cliché world, because you want to.
And if they do not manage to get some fresh air and ideas, I bet you next elections will finally show them the door, which actually suits me better. I rather see the back of all of them instead of just a bunch.

MrsOwainGlyndŵr · 10/07/2022 10:55

Plus he’s not in favour of tax cuts so economically it’d be grim for us plebs if he gets in.

The amount we collectively pay in tax has reduced a lot now we're all wfh and not buying as much petrol. It's going to reduce even further as electric cars get more popular. So either they'll have to find a way of taxing electric cars, or will have to introduce or raise some other tax.

TheSoundOfLunch · 10/07/2022 10:57

Do you really think that there are any good options amongst those wrestling for the top spot? If so, more fool you.

CredibilityProblem · 10/07/2022 10:58

Ncwinc · 10/07/2022 10:50

Why have a green card while serving as an MP and minister? How loyal is he in supporting the interests of UK and its people.’

So you must have been terribly disappointed to find out that Boris Johnson held US citizenship until 2017. So that was while he was:

MP for Henley June 2001 - June 2008
Mayor of London May 2008 - May 2016
MP for Uxbridge and South Ruislip May 2015 -
Foreign Secretary - July 2016 - July 2018 (renounced citizenship during this period)

I don't think we need to spend time on this thread saying that Johnson was an egregious chancer with all the sexual, personal and financial ethics of Lloyd George but none of the competence. It goes without saying.

Johnson's commitment to the country of his birth strangely evaporated the instant they decided they wanted to tax him in return for US citizenship (to be fair he's far from alone in that - there was a mass resignation of US dual nationalities when the tax laws changed).

plugee · 10/07/2022 10:46

What's an example of someone who is committed?

I think the fact he's so rich & doesn't need the scrutiny or stress but wants the job shows he's pretty committed. He's clearly ambitious & probably wants a legacy of some sort.

A hobby job. Not a job. I'd prefer he took up fishing or something.

Another way the tax burden is increasingly the poor. When you say "we" are all wfh, you mean the middle classes. There aren't many minimum wage jobs being done from home

Wrong and Wrong.

Tax receipts have never been higher, peaking at £718bn in 2021-2022.

At the same time, the tax burden is at its highest since WW2.

So no lower taxes are not ‘grim’ news for ‘plebs’ as someone put it. And no collective taxation has not reduced.

this kind of misinformation really is bad.

Dimondsareforever · 10/07/2022 10:59

I disagree. And you are being unreasonable. There are many reasons why he shouldn’t be PM. But just because he is rich isn’t one of them. I don’t care if they are rich or poor. As long as they do a good job. Personally I don’t discriminate people based on their background.

AllyCatTown · 10/07/2022 11:00

The whole photo opportunity with the borrowed car showed us that he thinks we’re idiots. Though I still prefer him to Boris.

The wealth does bother me though a lot are rich. I just find it hard to believe they can understand what it’s like for the average person.

Runnerduck34 · 10/07/2022 11:01

Personally I think someone who was a non dom while chancellor of exchequer and was using legal but perhaps not entirely moral tax avoidance whilst in a senior post in government shouldn't be PM.
For a start, if a non dom, how truly committed is he to this country?
And using it as a way to avoid paying tax whilst you are chancellor of exchequer and responsible for making the laws regarding tax just doesn't sit right me at all.
But then I'm not a tory, I suspect the majority of tories will think its absolutely fine.

I agree, it has a place for people who are genuinely temporary expatriates. If you're just using it as a fig leaf, or if you're non-dom/Green Card while holding a position which should require a more permanent commitment to this country, then it's a problem.

It’s like someone on another thread said, for many the best candidate for the job would single mother of six Sandra, 46, who hasn’t worked in 25 years. Because you must be poor to be virtuous. Never mind competent.

Ncwinc · 10/07/2022 11:04

’I don't think we need to spend time on this thread saying that Johnson was an egregious chancer with all the sexual, personal and financial ethics of Lloyd George but none of the competence’

It passes the time Wink

My issue is with those who seem to be holding Rishi Sunak to a higher standard than they did Boris Johnson or other senior Tories. I’ll never be a Conservative voter. I have no skin in the game - of any colour.

TullyApplebottom · 10/07/2022 10:26

shes entitled to manage her affairs however she wants, within the law.
my husband has no involvement in how I manage my tax affairs and if he tried to interfere I’d tell him to shove off.

Is your husband chancellor or PM?

gbliu87767 · 10/07/2022 11:05

Aside from the wealth, the problem with all the non-dom statuses etc is that they basically see being a British PM as a one of (not often the most lucrative) stint in their global job portfolio. A little bit like picking up cycling for a couple of years. I mean you might try but the reality is that you can also just go off and do indoor climbing if the weather looks bad or god forbid you get an injury. The rest of the British public (esp. since Brexit) are stuck here and cant just go off to Cali for the climate and the real cash. Which means it would be good to get people in charge, who will actually be affected by the policies they enact.

plugee · 10/07/2022 11:07

@coodawoodashooda and someone who is committed?

BalloonsAndWhistles · 10/07/2022 11:08

I personally would quite like him to be the PM.

Dons hard hat.

AllyCatTown · 10/07/2022 11:08

Is it not just the case that people who are born into privileged wealthy families find it hard to understand what it’s like for the average person? I think that’s an issue people have with a millionaire PM and a millionaire cabinet.
