AIBU to think my dd is overweight

HappyMom1122 · 09/07/2022 06:49

My 15 year old daughter is 6'2 and 220 lbs. I definitely think she is overweight. But, my daughter insists that she is not overweight and she does quite good at basketball. She says that she's athletic. She also claims that she's quite as fast as her teammates(which I think she actually is).

But, the number is too high to believe that she isn't overweight. Also, her basketball coach also thinks she's perfectly healthy.

AIBU to think she is overweight?

When did you last speak to the coach? Schools have already been closed for at least a month (in some states two months) for summer now.

AliceS1994 · 09/07/2022 18:12

She is the exact same height and weight as my husband, a 32 year old bloke

LargeLegoHaul · 09/07/2022 18:50

Liz Cambage is several inches taller, and an adult.

Snowpatrolling · 09/07/2022 19:05

Careful op,
my mum spent years telling me I was fat and that I eat to much (I wasn’t fat)
I now have serious issues around food because of it which has resulted in me being overweight.
every time I diet/eat healthy exercise, I have my mums nagging voice in the back of my head and I go and eat.
therapy did t help either. You may be causing more damage than you think.

trailrunner85 · 09/07/2022 20:05

Does she look like Liz Cambage in proportion? Because her measurements are very similar to what the OP describes, and her weight is clearly not an issue

What, professional basketballer Liz Cambage who is seven inches taller than the OP's daughter, yet half a stone lighter?

The Liz Cambage who has a BMI of 23 so is well within the healthy range?

I know there are people on this thread absolutely desperate to prove that being an athlete or being tall means BMI doesn't apply, but you'll have to do better than Liz Cambage.

Beanomatica · 10/07/2022 01:37

I'm not desperate to prove anything, and my apologies if Liz Cambage wasn't the perfect example.

I was trying to point out (evidently not very well) that there can be significant differences in stature which mean BMI isn't a clear marker, and we don't know if any of those apply here.

A very petite framed person can be carrying a lot of excess fat even if they are in the middle of the BMI range. Conversely a very broad statured person can be carrying very little body fat at all, but still be classified as overweight according to BMI.

We have both of those body types in my family; I wasn't trying to be hyperbolic. I just think that a bunch of randoms like ourselves cannot possibly advise on whether the OP's daughter is relevantly overweight.

We haven't seen her (and the OP definitely should not post a photo), we don't know her body type, her skin fold measurements, her waist to hip ratio, her arm span or ANYTHING about her. The daughter's basketball coach is likely to be a far better source of advice than us.

The OP clearly has concerns. She does not appear to be a position where she can take an educated, objective, nuanced view about the issue. Neither are we. So trying to do so is unlikely to be helpful for her or her DD.

XelaM · 10/07/2022 01:45

Muscles weigh more than fat, so if she looks very athletic and is very fast, it's possible that it's muscle rather than fat.

XelaM · 10/07/2022 01:54

EarringsandLipstick · 09/07/2022 17:45

Oh stop OP. We all remember!

Except if you search by OP's username you will see that she didn't post any pictures of her daughter and only posted one thread about finding her clothes that fit.

wellhelloitsme · 10/07/2022 02:04

@XelaM

Of course we may be wrong but there was a thread with a picture that had a very similar background sport wise etc.

I think that's that's what people are remembering and assuming is the same person. Including me.

Muscle does not weigh more than fat, it takes up less space as it is more dense but a kg is still a kg whether it’s a kg of feathers or a kilo of rocks.

Oh for gods sake, more dense ( or weighs more fir her size) is what people mean by 'weighs more' , cut the patronising physics lecture
Kg is not a unit if weight anyway if you want to beva smart alec

Nope.

So two people with almost identical usernames and very similar posting styles posted about the same issue with very very similar details, right oh 🙄

IDreamOfTheMoors · 10/07/2022 02:36

The calculator I used says she’s “at risk.” It’s great that your daughter is active. As a parent, it’s your job to keep an eye out on your child, but nagging or browbeating usually have very little results.

I bet she's lovely and healthy then 😊.

Bunnycat101 · 10/07/2022 07:54

The average woman worldwide is not 5ft7- that is rubbish. The Netherlands has the tallest women with an average of around 5ft6 according to some of the stats I’ve seen.

the thing I’d be more worried about with the OP’s daughter is the point at which she reached her height. At 6:2 she really is exceptionally tall for a woman.

Glitternails1 · 10/07/2022 12:37

@HappyMom1122 your Dd is 15.7 stone which is about 4 stone heavier than my DP (a man) who is also 6ft 2. Here is a chart. Your Dd is overweight (too heavy for her height). Don’t nag her about her weight and dieting etc but prepare healthy meals and say no to takeaways etc.

FFS muscle DOES NOT weigh more than fat! Why do people keep spouting this shite

It's not strictly true but it is more dense.

Well, you can see female basketball players are mostly 6'+. So, I don't think her being 6'2 is problematic at all.

The density matters, that's where this line about muscle being more heavy came from. The muscle takes up much less space than the same weight of fat.

You're right it doesn't weigh more but this is why it still matters when talking about weight and body fat percentages.

Exactly. A muscly person could weigh a lot but still look thin.

They are adults. At 15y/o a 6ft2 girl is off the chart and should normally be under specialist review.

Rocky2022 · 10/07/2022 18:50

Wow OP. Leave her alone. You are going the right way about giving her an eating disorder.
Do not focus on weight. Focus on fitness. Maybe fo some exercise together.

Girls don't grow much after puberty.

I was off the charts tall when I was in primary/early secondary. I was always at least a head taller than everyone in my class and usually as tall/taller than the teachers. My parents were so worried they took me to doctors to see if my growth needs to be stopped in some way. But when I started puberty at 12/13 I stopped growing (or grew very little) and although I'm tall, I'm no giant - around 180cm.

Growth charts take into account finishing puberty but still say "Children whose growth lies on these outer lines are likely to have additional clinical problems, and if not already receiving medical attention should be referred" and “Children plotting above this line should usually be under specialist review”. You yourself post you were medically reviewed.
