AIBU to think my dd is overweight

My 15 year old daughter is 6'2 and 220 lbs. I definitely think she is overweight. But, my daughter insists that she is not overweight and she does quite good at basketball. She says that she's athletic. She also claims that she's quite as fast as her teammates(which I think she actually is).

But, the number is too high to believe that she isn't overweight. Also, her basketball coach also thinks she's perfectly healthy.

AIBU to think she is overweight?

you should only need medical review of the height is unusual in relation to the parents. I am over 6' and DH is 6'7". Our children were all born of the scale and 2 remained off. The one who is only 5'11 had various unrelated medical issues which may have stunted her growth. My oldest DD has been 6'3" since she was 13. DS is 6'6". Neither have seen specialists.

OP is 5ft9 or 155m depending on which thread you read so isn’t unusually tall though. Even if the father is exceptionally tall the charts wouldn’t expect the DD to be above the +4SD line. Tall parents don’t account for the DD’s weight being above the +3SD line either, which in itself warrants specialist review.

The guidance also says “…and if not already receiving medical attention should be referred.” Not make a judgement based on the parents’ height then consider referring.

Honestly there are a lot of women who are 6'+. And girls don't grow much after 15, like mostly 1-2 inches. Why would someone being 6'2 at 15 be an health issue then?

Tbf girls do seem to be taller these days. My DD had quite a few 6ft girls in the last year at secondary (so 15-16), she and her friends were all around the 5'10/11 mark. She's still that height now and she's 20.

I have random family members who are 6”5 and the like and perfectly healthy and their parents are normal size. It pops up once every few generations. 6”2 isn’t even abnormally tall. So re genetic problems if she is otherwise happy and healthy I wouldn’t be too concerned

It is for a woman.

I must have a short circle of friends. Non of us are taller than 5ft5

Have you got any statistics to back that up? 6ft2 is highly unusual for a woman.

TattiePants · 11/07/2022 15:25

Of course 6ft 2 is unusually tall for a woman and I say that as someone who may well have a 6ft+ DD in the future. My DD is 11 and 5ft 6, in fact she may well be taller than that as we haven't measured her in ages. The difference is, that DD comes from a very tall family (I'm the shortest at 5ft 11) so for her it obviously is genetics. She is also very slim. A very tall and overweight child that comes from an otherwise average height family could well be a health issue.

Because children at the extremes are likely to have additional clinical problems. I am not saying there definitely is but there may be, which is why specialist review is needed. Personally, I don’t consider less than 1% “lots”.

My son (14.5) is 6’2.5 and weights 81.kg.
That’s not quite 180lbs.

He is big, very. Bit with solid muscle and not much fat.

Your daughter is a lot heavier than him, and women have more fat generally such is their body composition, so I can see why you’re concerned without even seeing a picture of her. If my son had 40lbs extra on him - he would definitely be overweight.

None of that matters in the case of your daughter though. What does matter is absolutely not making her paranoid about this. The last thing she needs is her mother calling her fat and telling her to lose weight.
