How much would you expect to pay for this cake?

Picture attached. This is the exact cake from the cake shop I went into today. It is 6 inches and serves 8-10 people.

I just want to know if my expectations are way off as I was extremely shocked at the price.

My local cake shop that would be 25-30 with fresh cream. Maybe less for 6 inch which is actually tiny

catfunk · 08/07/2022 20:32

£45 where I live if from a pepper
Bakery or cake maker.
£15 if from a supermarket (won't be fresh and will be full of preservatives)

catfunk · 08/07/2022 20:33

*proper bakery not pepper !!!!

gimmepeaceandsky · 08/07/2022 20:34

£50

Watapalava · 08/07/2022 20:35

There’s no way on gods earth that cake is worth more than £20

those saying they would pay £40-50 are crazy

its crap

Justbefair · 08/07/2022 20:38

£25? Wouldn't ask for that cake to be specifically made as it's very generic. X

Borntofun · 08/07/2022 20:55

Thanks. I think I needed to hear that!

Beautiful3 · 08/07/2022 21:05

I'd say £45-£55?

CanaryShoulderedThorn · 08/07/2022 21:12

I only paid out for a professional cake once and it was not nice, I don't think they had even used proper butter. Since then I've made my own. I think once the energy prices hike again, spending on "luxury" items like bespoke cakes will be seen as frivolous.

@Harrysmummy246

I live in a town where we have 2 pound bakeries and a greggs. It's DEFINITELY upmarket 😂

Giggle. It's all relative I guess.
Still wouldn't put greenhalgh's into posh though. Even if they're the only christmas puddings my mum will have

HandScreen · 08/07/2022 21:33

£35-£40

strawberrylacey · 08/07/2022 21:34

£15

Macarons are overrated middleclass garbage.

Iziz · 08/07/2022 21:34

Maximum 40 at a push it’s not even high enough

camdenl · 08/07/2022 21:35

Honestly I would have said around £20 too, but maybe the pic makes the cake look smaller than it is in person. Personally would want something more exciting than a chocolate cake for £35

Mummyof287 · 08/07/2022 21:38

ARatherAwkwardOuting · 07/07/2022 20:44

And now I want chocolate cake.

Same! Looks delish!

Would expect it to be about £20 if it only serves that many, as it doesn't look particularly intricate unless I'm missing something :-/

A 6 inch cake from Patisserie Valerie is approx £30, depending on ingredients ofc

Peanutgurgle · 08/07/2022 22:06

They are selling them in sainsburys.

a1poshpaws · 08/07/2022 23:12

Blooming heck - I really am a 69 year old innocent at large: there's no way I'd have expected that cake to cost more than £12 max!

Mirw · 09/07/2022 01:56

Four tiny macaroons in M&S are £3.50. You have de ENT sized ones there so at least £16 for them alone. And cake shops are not like M&S so you have to expect to pay much much more. £35 is okay for a large cake like that with macaroons. Look at Waitrose, they would charge about that for a, special cake without the decoration!

12 classic macaroons £2.99 in Aldi

QueenWatevraWaNabi · 09/07/2022 08:30

This is a gateaux, not a cake. That's why it looks like it does. And why it is absolutely delicious.

P205 · 09/07/2022 09:44

Well, if it’s decorated with Aldi macarons, I’d definitely be disappointed. The bakery near my house has the most amazing macarons. Expensive, but they taste so much better than supermarket ones.

LondonMrsA · 09/07/2022 10:07

I’d buy a Chocolate Gateau and a box of Macaron from M&S. But, even then, it’d be expensive.

Don’t say that!! Aldi is sacrosanct on MN and you’ll likely be thrown off the boards for uttering a word of negativity.
