How much would you expect to pay for this cake?

Picture attached. This is the exact cake from the cake shop I went into today. It is 6 inches and serves 8-10 people.

I just want to know if my expectations are way off as I was extremely shocked at the price.

I don't quite understand why you bought it!

I'm thinking...pop into patissierie Valerie to check out the cakes...ooh they're a bit pricy...leave shop...go to M&S or tesco...buy cheaper cake. I can't see why you'd shell out for it if you thought it was expensive. Though I wouldn't be at all surprised that a small patissierie chain was more expensive than a supermarket either.

Home made macarons are £2-3 each. And the cake on top. If it's a proper posh bakery then £50 but if it's a slightly more upmarket chain like greenhaulghs (?) then. £28 ish. From marks maybe £20?

Intrigued that you see Greenhalgh's as upmarket!?!?!? @devonianBiatch

At least if it's the one based in Lancashire I'm thinking of

Lj99x · 08/07/2022 19:01

Absolute maximum would be £50, just purely cause of the macarons.

Emotionalsupportviper · 08/07/2022 19:05

No way a 6 inch cake serves 8-10 people!

<misses point>

Ifeelsuchafool · 08/07/2022 19:10

£35

Onelovelyone · 08/07/2022 19:18

£50-£60? Cakes are always pricey and it’s not really the ingredients you are paying for but their time and overheads of running a shop.

Borntofun · 08/07/2022 19:23

£30-I am so underselling myself☹️

Rhaenys · 08/07/2022 19:27

The cake in that picture looks like it’s bigger than only 8-10 servings. Based on that picture I’d say about £40-50 but I’m guessing more?

DanceItOut · 08/07/2022 19:27

From a supermarket £15-20 from a cake maker specifically for you £30-40.

Autumn61 · 08/07/2022 19:30

I don’t see how a six inch cake will serve 8-10 people. I would expect to pay £30 from a bakery and £18-25 from supermarket.
It also depends on where you live. My SiL laughs at my dropped jaw and says ”Thame prices”.

MayDaze · 08/07/2022 19:32

Posting my comment before I read the thread.

If you were having a slice of cake after a meal you would be charged around a fiver a slice, so 10 slices would be £50 plus extra £10 if smaller business as bigger overheads.

Rhaenys · 08/07/2022 19:34

Oh I missed the part which said it was 6 inches. I’d say about £25-30 in that case.

Just seen your update which says it’s £35. That’s a little pricey. Then again macarons are expensive. I expect to pay £12-15 for a box of 6.

Hmm1234 · 08/07/2022 19:35

Patisserie Valerie cake. They taste amazing and are definitely worth the money the only time I’ve been let down is by the inscription on one birthday cake. I’d expect to pay £50 with delivery

devonianBiatch · 08/07/2022 19:37

@Harrysmummy246

I live in a town where we have 2 pound bakeries and a greggs. It's DEFINITELY upmarket 😂

Witchcraftandhokum · 08/07/2022 19:40

If this is from an independent Baker remember they don't have access to the cheap bulk buy ingredients that chains like marks and spencers have (almond flour for the macrons is particularly expensive). Gas and/or electric will have been factored into the cost as well as (probably) minimum hourly wage.

Hollyhead · 08/07/2022 19:41

£20-25

MayDaze · 08/07/2022 19:41

heartbroken22 · 07/07/2022 22:38

I'd pay 18 quid and not a penny more...people are talking about makeup artists ripping people off...I think the cake industry is overpriced...I remember getting quoted 45 quid for a cake and thought are you absolutely bonkers???

Minimum wage is £9.50

3 hours work

Plus ingredients, equipment etc

So your £18 wouldn't cover paying the baker minimum wage let alone covering other costs.

ivykaty44 · 08/07/2022 19:44

I was going to say £50

£35 would be a good price in my area

You charged £30 for that? You are doing yourself and the industry a disservice. Up your prices! If you’re taking lots of orders (maybe you just do friends and family) and people go to you because you’re cheap, you’re undercutting lots of other local bakers who actually need to pay themselves and make money. Value your work, it’s lovely. If your cakes are not in someone’s budget then that’s fine and they’re not the customer for you. As this thread shows, just as many people will pay for a cake like that as wouldn’t.

Watapalava · 08/07/2022 19:49

I wouldn’t pay more than £20 for that

This!

You can't be making any money at all, making a cake like that for £30. It's a lovely cake, but you must be making no more than a tenner, if that , once you take into account ingredients, box, board, electricity, gas, petrol, contribution to equipment, colourings, baking parchment, insurance etc. Then there's the time taken shopping, doing admin, taking the order, baking, decorating, clearing up etc. You won't even be close to half minimum wage.

That's fine if you just want to make cakes for friends and family, a hobbyist. But if you want to sell to the general public, you'll never make any money charging like that. The PP is correct, value your work. Otherwise it's not fair, either to yourself, or to other local businesses. I've seen many businesses charge like this, because they worry they're too expensive if they charge more, or don't work out their costs correctly, but they never last as a business, it's just not sustainable

TheNinny · 08/07/2022 20:17

£20, looks amateur

drawacircleroundit · 08/07/2022 20:20

£20.

Rewis · 08/07/2022 20:28

I always think to myself that I will buy a cake. Then I look at the prices and always back out due to price and just make a simple one myself.
I understand that it's hand made but in my experience the raste is rarely worth the price.

jewishmum · 08/07/2022 20:30

£8-10
