How much would you expect to pay for this cake?

Picture attached. This is the exact cake from the cake shop I went into today. It is 6 inches and serves 8-10 people.

I just want to know if my expectations are way off as I was extremely shocked at the price.

I was going to say £15... 🤣 I'm not big on cakes.

GetThatHelmetOn · 07/07/2022 20:47

6 inches??? Well, it depends where you are getting it from but that size I would expect about £8-12 from a supermarket but 4x from a boutique baker.

lancsgirl85 · 07/07/2022 20:48

Ok it seems my expectations are way off, then 😂

It was £35. I've only ever bought supermarket cakes so was expecting it to be around £15-20 like it would be in say M&S. Clearly I'm deluded 😆

I didn't realise macaroons were expensive, either.

£50ISH. macaroons are so expensive

user143677433 · 07/07/2022 20:48

£35-£45ish.

More if it were a bit more precise.

That's what I was expecting. I got a shock 😳

Depends - is it home made, custom with hand made macarons?

Or is it a standard cake with bough macarons.

Former around £35, latter about £20

6 inches is small.

HannahSternDefoe · 07/07/2022 20:49

I wouldn't pay more than £2 per slice, so £20 max.

If it's "made to order" rather than just sitting there waiting to be bought maybe an extra fiver.

Supermarket cakes definitely lull you in to a false sense of security!

Just a packet of macarons is £6 in M&S

Bodice · 07/07/2022 20:50

Because of the ingredients and macaroons - £35. However it does look a bit amateur/wonky.

goldfinchonthelawn · 07/07/2022 20:51

It's only 6 inches wide? And there are 11 macarons on it, making it hard to split evenly between 6 people, let alone 8 or 10. I'd not pay more than £15 for that from a commercial baker. From an individual, maybe I'd expect it to be on sale for £20-25 but I wouldn't pay that. I'd make my own.

collieresponder88 · 07/07/2022 20:51

35 pounds

Merryoldgoat · 07/07/2022 20:51

Agree with PP that I don’t think it’s terribly well executed BUT hot weather is hard on cakes.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 07/07/2022 20:51

You would get an awesome fresh cake around here for £20 - much nicer looking than that, either from the Romanian bakery or the Algerian/French place.

I got my daughters from m and s recently and it was also 35 nothing spectacular either. You can't get much for 10 or 15 now

Replacethis · 07/07/2022 20:52

I was going to say 4 or 5 pounds. I can see that would not be realistic. There is no way I would pay £35 for a small cake.

HannahSternDefoe · 07/07/2022 20:52

Stick with Sains or M&S in future...six inches is too small to be of use to anyone, let alone 10 people Shock

Sundays365 · 07/07/2022 20:53

I guessed about £35. Going rate for a basic celebration cake non-supermarket. But I still think it’s an absolute piss take and wouldn’t pay it.

lancsgirl85 · 07/07/2022 20:53

@collieresponder88

I saw a lovely one in M&S for £13, about the same size as that cake, if not a bit bigger

You got a bargain!!!! 😂😂😂

Bellyups · 07/07/2022 20:54

£35 as it’s so amateur

BadTimesAtTheElRoyale · 07/07/2022 20:56

Between £35 and £40 works out £3.50ish a slice.

LimonataRocks · 07/07/2022 20:56

£35 was gonna be my guess Grin

drpet49 · 07/07/2022 20:57

@Replacethis oh don’t be so ridiculous, £4 or £5????? 🙄
