How much would you expect to pay for this cake?

Picture attached. This is the exact cake from the cake shop I went into today. It is 6 inches and serves 8-10 people.

I just want to know if my expectations are way off as I was extremely shocked at the price.

@heartbroken22 have you ever had to make a cake like this?

You'd be shocked at the sheer length of time it takes to produce this not to mention the skill.

We're talking 3+ hours and ingredients. So £18 is ridiculous

SleepSleepRaveAsleep · 07/07/2022 22:56

£40-£45

Spookysparkles · 07/07/2022 22:58

£35 is pretty fair for this cake but only because of the macarons. If the macarons weren’t on there I would say no more than £20

Spookysparkles · 07/07/2022 22:59

That said I’m currently getting quotes for wedding cakes - and oh WOW I had a shock!!!

EllaPaella · 07/07/2022 23:00

It looks very amateur. I'm sure the cost of the ingredients stacks up but I would expect it to look a lot better than that if buying from a professional. It doesn't even look as good as some of the supermarket cakes.

Replacethis · 07/07/2022 23:05

There may be time, skill and ingredients involved and it may need to be sold at £30 to £50 to make a profit but does that actually make a tiny cake worth paying £30 to £50 for? Who wants a little cake that much?

PlasticsFantastic · 07/07/2022 23:08

£50

Sallypally0 · 07/07/2022 23:08

£7

£45? I am always surprised at the cost of cakes even though I know the ingredients, time and expertise take a lot.

Not a lot of expertise there though, poorly placed icng and cheap looking macaroons, not much effort at all. Baking the cake is child's play.

Xmasbaby11 · 07/07/2022 23:09

£40

Unless you're including cooling time then 3 hours is crazy, 20 minutes to blitz the ingrediants in a mixer, cooking time, a few minutes to drizzle that awful icing and a couple of minutes to place the macaroons.

FrangipaniBlue · 07/07/2022 23:20

@JudgeJ I guess you don't think a baker should be paid for their time spent doing things like planning, shopping for ingredients, cleaning down surfaces beforehand and clearing up afterwards then?

JackieCollinshasnoauthority · 07/07/2022 23:22

£50 due to macarons. £30 without I would say. I would also say, I love macarons.

Yerroblemom1923 · 07/07/2022 23:26

£35

butterflyflutterby123 · 07/07/2022 23:27
  1. 70 if boutique
ShandaLear · 07/07/2022 23:32

I’d have said about £35 too. Patisserie Valerie cakes always look better than they taste though. They taste of perpetual disappointment so you’d probably be better off with an M&S cake anyway.

cakewitch · 07/07/2022 23:37

Butter is expensive.. almonds for macarons are expensive, and just because its ' just a cake' doesn't mean it comes cheap. People have to spend time making it. You want a custom cake???, then pay the going rate.. or buy it off the shelf from tesco.

daisyjgrey · 07/07/2022 23:40

Macaroons aren't overly expensive. Good macarons are though.

I'm aware I'm missing the point...

CourtneeLuv · 07/07/2022 23:44

I wouldn't pay more than £15 for that shit looking cake in the op.

And that £15 is being very generous. It looks like it should be £7.99.

easyday · 07/07/2022 23:45

£25-30, though I wouldn't be surprised at £15 or £40! I wouldn't pay more than £25 for that though - not special looking enough.

TrashPandas · 07/07/2022 23:51

Six inches and serves 8-10? Who are these people, The Borrowers?

marigoldflower · 07/07/2022 23:56

Who took the photo OP?

The aesthetics of the picture (with the wooden chair, tea towel, lighting and pastel colours) is probably an indication that the price of the cake will not be cheap 🙂

MintedVinted527 · 08/07/2022 00:14

Expect to pay up to £60 if from a small bakery
The macarons are £1-£2each alone

Could always buy a caterpillar cake instead 😋

ashitghost · 08/07/2022 00:25

Tenner

I would assume that the macarons are home-baked too. It's covered in chocolate cream and then ganache on top. I think it looks delicious!

i would pay 35 pounds for it.
