How much would you expect to pay for this cake?

Picture attached. This is the exact cake from the cake shop I went into today. It is 6 inches and serves 8-10 people.

I just want to know if my expectations are way off as I was extremely shocked at the price.

How much would you expect to pay for this cake?

It's offending me because the macarons at the front of the cake have been placed further in from the edge of the cake. This is to hide the fact that they have eaten the 12th macaron!
(macarons=almond, macaroons contain coconut)

GoodJanetBadJanet · 07/07/2022 21:57

Ah that explains it, us northerners want something for nothing! 😂
I'm Northern, but also realistic!
Some of these guesses are ridiculous, 10 to 15 quid?!
You would barely be able to buy the ingredients for that!
Then you factor in the skill and the time it takes to make it and fuel costs to bake etc otherwise you'd basically be baking for nothing.
Supermarket cakes cost at least a tenner so stands to reason a homemade one rather than a mass produced one will be more expensive.

LMB0716 · 07/07/2022 22:00

I don’t think it is a homemade cake, unless I’m wrong. Are PV cakes not mass produced, posted to you and arrive frozen? I could be wrong.

LilacPoppy · 07/07/2022 22:08

£25-£30

Dixiechickonhols · 07/07/2022 22:08

I think £35 is very reasonable. Have you seen price of butter. I’m up north too. Macarons Decorations on top aren’t cheap either. If you want to pay £15 get a supermarket cake.

Somethingneedstochange · 07/07/2022 22:11

It reminds me of a supermarket one. I'd say £25-£30.

tillytoodles1 · 07/07/2022 22:11

€30.

sleepyhoglet · 07/07/2022 22:15

£38

Somethingneedstochange · 07/07/2022 22:16

Have you tasted any of it yet though. Cake's made by an independent bakery taste so much better. I've had some supermarket cakes that look lovely but think they must dry out a bit when they're on the shelves. Not moist and can only really taste the icing.

knittingaddict · 07/07/2022 22:17

At least £40. Probably closer to £50.

Emilizz34 · 07/07/2022 22:19

Well I make cakes for family events . If I use ingredients from Aldi/Lidl plus stuff in cupboard it costs around £15 but that doesn’t take into account the time involved.
Ive seen cakes like this on display in my local supermarket for around £50 . They are models in a cabinet so they will make to order

knittingaddict · 07/07/2022 22:21

I had a rough idea because we have specialist cake shops in out city and the simpliest cakes were nearly £30.00 three years ago. I imagine prices have gone up since then and your cake looks more fancy than those.

eatsleepswimdive · 07/07/2022 22:24

You’re not charging enough

Bazinga007 · 07/07/2022 22:24

20 quid, 25 at a push

Kerrrmieee · 07/07/2022 22:28

lancsgirl85 · 07/07/2022 20:48

That's what I was expecting. I got a shock 😳

🤣 well I can't stand anything almond, whether it be marzipan or a macaron so you'd have to pay me to eat it.

I just thought it looked like a bog standard cake with bits stuck on.

Anyway was it nice? Did you serve it between 8-10 people, or just divvy into quarters 🤣

Momtotwokids · 07/07/2022 22:29

First yes macaroons are expensive and my daughter works in a bake shop in the US and the minimum would be $55.00. Butter is very expensive.

LondonQueen · 07/07/2022 22:29

£50 from a local cake store.

WiddlinDiddlin · 07/07/2022 22:31

Its a gateaux, rather than a cake - it will look a bit soft and wobbly because its a very soft cake with layers of cream and a cream covering, not heavier, more supportive buttercream.

If you want to pay less for a cake, buy it from a supermarket and not a somewhat overpriced 'high end' patisserie.

Momtotwokids · 07/07/2022 22:32

My daughter also mentioned she could never get 11 macaroons on a 6" cake so the price would be $35.00

blisstwins · 07/07/2022 22:34

30

EntertainingandFactual · 07/07/2022 22:35

I’ve scrolled past all the comments so thatI could get my guess in!
I think the cake in your picture is worth no more than £20 from an independent cake maker.
It’s small, looks like a supermarket cake, has no interesting detail and the macaroons (macaron?) could easily be bought.

Having said that, I’m going to say they’re asking £50 for it… 🤣

crochetmonkey74 · 07/07/2022 21:07

I'm not discrediting bakers or cost of ingredients etc bit those saying £40-50 foe a 6 inch cake? That is madness!!! Who can pay that for a cake

This is from a local shop, £50 on offer at the min but usually £75
6 inch drip cake

How much would you expect to pay for this cake?
heartbroken22 · 07/07/2022 22:38

I'd pay 18 quid and not a penny more...people are talking about makeup artists ripping people off...I think the cake industry is overpriced...I remember getting quoted 45 quid for a cake and thought are you absolutely bonkers???

CambsAlways · 07/07/2022 22:41

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 07/07/2022 22:42
