How much would you expect to pay for this cake?

Picture attached. This is the exact cake from the cake shop I went into today. It is 6 inches and serves 8-10 people.

I just want to know if my expectations are way off as I was extremely shocked at the price.

Depends what the actual cake part is made of and tastes of and the chocolate overlay - if it's cheapo, marge and cooking choco then £20 at a stretch.

If the cake is full of lusciousness then £45+ - even in the NE.

At my local bakery, 10 macarons cost around 15 pounds.

At my local bakery, 10 macarons cost around 15 pounds.

And at Iceland they cost £3.50.

Seriously... what's with the macaron love, everyone? These look like cheap frozen ones to match the crappy decoration vibe in general.

A 6 inch cake to serve 8-10 people??! 😯*misses point of thread...

ArcticSkewer · 08/07/2022 02:20

This is the ingredient list. I wouldn't pay £45 for palm oil. Bleurgh.
How 'handmade' are these cakes? Never tried Patisserie Valerie but a previous poster's description of the taste of disappointment sounds about right.

I just assumed that the bakery made their own rather than picking them up at Iceland though. there's a big taste difference to the ones hand made and the ones that are mass produced.

Jconnais1chansonquivavsenerver · 08/07/2022 05:04

I looked up anges de sucre, as mentioned in an earlier post. Do they taste as good as they look, @LovelyRaita? I want to have a celebration in London just so I can try one of their cakes!

JellyBellyNelly · 08/07/2022 05:54

It looks very drab and I’d assume the macarons aren’t good quality (along with the rest of the cake) so I wouldn’t have bought it in the first place.

I think charging 18-20 pounds for it would just be bordering on cheeky.

JellyBellyNelly · 08/07/2022 05:59

Just read the full thread OP and saw it was 35 pounds.

It wasn’t worth that. It’s drab and looks mass produced.

Someone asked what’s the love for Macarons? Honestly, a proper Macaron is delicious but you have to pay quite a bit for a really good one or make them yourself.

FIZZYTEDDY · 07/07/2022 22:42

@heartbroken22 have you ever had to make a cake like this?

You'd be shocked at the sheer length of time it takes to produce this not to mention the skill.

We're talking 3+ hours and ingredients. So £18 is ridiculous

I’d pay about £40 for a perfect cake with more aesthetic value.
this particular one looks amateurish. The dripping and side of the cake is wonky, the macaroons appear to have been shoved on with nary a hint of precision.

Sartre · 08/07/2022 09:43

I think the price is fair purely because macarons are so expensive. If it wasn’t topped with them I’d say closer to £25.

You’d be surprised. Most cakers I know buy macarons to use on their cakes. Most cake decorators I know are in it for the looks not the taste basically. And their customers are too so that’s fine I guess. But they’re not talented bakers. Macs aren’t even that hard, it’s just a faff. I used to make them weekly when I worked in cafe, it’s so therapeutic to me!

Sue2704 · 08/07/2022 17:48

Well a slice of homemade cake round where I live, Northamptonshire, is between 3.50 and 3.75, so considering there is no washing up or service costs involved I would say sub 40 for sure.

Clodoe87 · 08/07/2022 17:52

My cake lady charges £35 for a standard 9 inch cake. Something with lots of detail would be £50. So this I would expect less than £35. Maybe in the region of £25

Summerofsyn · 08/07/2022 18:13

Looks like a PATISSERIE VALERIE cake so it should be £35. Definitely wouldn’t pay any more.

Spanielsarepainless · 08/07/2022 18:22

Looks like a posh Lidl one. So £3? And the servings as recommended would be microscopic. It looks about right for 4...

MadMadaMim · 08/07/2022 18:34

£30-£50.

The macarons alone are probably £20-£25.

Spaceshiphaslanded · 08/07/2022 18:36

We have a very good local cake shop, and this would be about £60.

Whatsonmymindgrapes · 08/07/2022 18:38

£35 is so cheap for a cake! They ussually cost about £80+

BruceWaynettaSlob · 08/07/2022 18:39

It looks shit. I can't believe that was made by a professional.

Charlize43 · 08/07/2022 18:43

ASDA Large Chocolate Celebration Cake - serves 16 (£9.50) with a pack of ASDA Extra special 12 macaron selection (£3) stuck on top... Extra chocolate to re-ice it to give it the handmade wonky look (£2.50) I'd say, around £16?

I could let you have one similar to the one you posted for around £45

threatmatrix · 08/07/2022 18:43

It depends, is it organic ingredients is the chocolate Ganache did they use vanilla flavouring or extract etc? A normal cake £25, quality ingredients £35+
