How much would you expect to pay for this cake?

Picture attached. This is the exact cake from the cake shop I went into today. It is 6 inches and serves 8-10 people.

I just want to know if my expectations are way off as I was extremely shocked at the price.

@Replacethis oh don’t be so ridiculous, £4 or £5????? 🙄

It's always the same on these threads, isn't it? Someone else will say £780 soon enough.

plugee · 07/07/2022 21:25

£35

Jenasaurus · 07/07/2022 21:25

Just checked as I got one from Cake Box, serves 10 and was 45.99 (see similar one below)

Popsicle33 · 07/07/2022 21:26

It looks shit. I wouldn't pay more than £20 for it.

SaggyBlinders · 07/07/2022 21:26

£40 - 45

Jenasaurus · 07/07/2022 21:26

And mine didnt have any macaroons

LMB0716 · 07/07/2022 21:28

Definitely not London! I accept that I am in the north east and everything is cheap as chips here! My mortgage for my 4 bed semi is less than £300 a month so I can afford to sell cheap cake! 😂

MassiveSalad22 · 07/07/2022 21:28

@LMB0716 Up your prices! You can’t be making much on that. Pay yourself NMW at least! Utilities, ingredients, profit etc.

I was going to say £15... 🤣 I'm not big on cakes.

yeah there's a big difference in price between a supermarket type cake and a handmade one from a cake shop.

lancsgirl85 · 07/07/2022 20:48

Ok it seems my expectations are way off, then 😂

It was £35. I've only ever bought supermarket cakes so was expecting it to be around £15-20 like it would be in say M&S. Clearly I'm deluded 😆

I didn't realise macaroons were expensive, either.

I'm a big fan of supermarket cake, but yeah cakes from a cake shop are waaay more.

Turkish shop near me, £25. A normal cake lady, if it’s filled with fresh cream, £60?

Eh say what now? So a turkish cake maker is not a "normal" one? 🤔

LoisLane66 · 07/07/2022 21:36

£68 and I haven't read the thread so may be wildly out. 🤔

I'm also in the north east ... maybe that's why I expected a cheaper cake 🤣

I charge £35 for this 7inch cake. I do think £35 is expensive for that size.

That looks lovely.

Prices are similar here too - cheaper end of NW

DwightShrutesgirlfriend · 07/07/2022 21:41

I'm not impressed with the standard of the cake, but my children bought me a day at cook school for my birthday and one of the things we made was macarons. I can vouch that they are a lot of work.

floweringpoppies · 07/07/2022 21:43

6 inches is tiny though isn't it? I would expect £35 for an 8 inch but not for a tiny cake!!!

GoodJanetBadJanet · 07/07/2022 21:43

I'd say anything up to 50 pounds

LMB0716 · 07/07/2022 21:44

Ah that explains it, us northerners want something for nothing! 😂

MMAMPWGHAP · 07/07/2022 21:47

I was about to compare with Patisserie Valerie, but now I realise it is Patisserie Valerie and costs the same here in London.

TyneTortoise · 07/07/2022 21:47

I accept that macaroons are expensive but that cake looks ugly. Like someone just made a chocolate cake and stuck a load of macarons on top. Not appealing at all!

cushioncovers · 07/07/2022 21:50

£20-25. Not worth anymore it's a simple sponge cake isn't it?

LovelyRaita · 07/07/2022 21:50

All those people saying, 'You could get one for £10 in M&S' - you've seen In the Factory with Gregg Wallace, right? With the vats of liquid (and not necessarily free range) eggs pumped in by a tanker, and the mahoosive paddles whipping it all up and the industrial ovens, and then a few rows of women doing the 'hand finishing'? M&S aren't paying the same for eggs/butter/sugar as The Village Bakery - there's a reason they can charge a third of the price.

Don't even google Ange de Sucres, OP. Your head will explode.

SwanBuster · 07/07/2022 21:50

I thought it was mass produced - it's not the best looking thing, so I'd have said £15-18.

If I had known it wasn't, I'd have said £40.

roundandrounditgoes1234 · 07/07/2022 21:53

£45

purplepaintedpineapple · 07/07/2022 21:55

My daughter in law makes cakes and would charge about £40 - the ingredients aren't cheap especially butter and she can easily take 3hrs to bake, ice then decorate a cake, then there's usually a board and box to transport it to add in, so probably only gets £8ph... but her cakes are yummy and there's no comparison to shop produced rubbish - any I've had have been tasteless and dry
