How much would you expect to pay for this cake?

Picture attached. This is the exact cake from the cake shop I went into today. It is 6 inches and serves 8-10 people.

I just want to know if my expectations are way off as I was extremely shocked at the price.

I can't believe people who are saying less than £30. Assuming it's not a mass produced item, after you've taken the cost of ingredients and overheads into account, you'd honestly begrudge someone paying themselves at least a minimum hourly wage to make something like this?

PatientlyWaiting21 · 07/07/2022 20:59

I’d expect to pay £45-50

PatientlyWaiting21 · 07/07/2022 21:01

Leosnewmummy · 07/07/2022 20:42

£25

£25?! That’s £2.50 a slice, after ingredients purchased, just how much profit do you think that leaves the baker?! Remember it’s ingredients, skill and time you are paying for!

ZenNudist · 07/07/2022 21:01

I'd have said £30 but then I thought it might be a trick question because fancy patisserie would charge more.

£15 won't even get you a nice supermarket cake.

Viviennemary · 07/07/2022 21:05

About £15.

lancsgirl85 · 07/07/2022 20:48

Ok it seems my expectations are way off, then 😂

It was £35. I've only ever bought supermarket cakes so was expecting it to be around £15-20 like it would be in say M&S. Clearly I'm deluded 😆

I didn't realise macaroons were expensive, either.

😂

Hesma · 07/07/2022 21:06

£30-40 although tbh I’d just make it myself

crochetmonkey74 · 07/07/2022 21:07

I'm not discrediting bakers or cost of ingredients etc bit those saying £40-50 foe a 6 inch cake? That is madness!!! Who can pay that for a cake

Lovemusic33 · 07/07/2022 21:07

Looks like something you could buy in M&S for £15, it’s pretty simple, not much skill or time in making it so I wouldn’t pay much…..because I could up similar in M&S or Waitrose.

Darbs76 · 07/07/2022 21:07

£35 is cheap. People think cakes should be cheap as only a bit of flour, sugar etc but a lot more than that to factor in. Plus time to decorate. This one isn’t that detailed hence the cheaper price. £35 is reasonable.

WishILivedInThrushGreen · 07/07/2022 21:09

It's uneven and very plain. I'd have complained.
I've seen better, for less, in a supermarket.

IfIhearmumagaintoday · 07/07/2022 21:09

Area dependant and how well known the Baker is. £80 I'm guessing

EverydayIsPJday · 07/07/2022 21:10

I guessed £25 but I'm obviously off the mark too! It looks nice but not WOAH iyswim.

Happy to eat it though and give a separate valuation based on taste 😁

GrandRapids · 07/07/2022 21:11

I was going to say £10-£15 😳

I've bought nicer looking ones from the supermarket

LubaLuca · 07/07/2022 21:12

Viviennemary · 07/07/2022 21:05

About £15.

I couldn't make it myself for £15. Have you seen the price of butter?!

I'm assuming the people making the remarkably low guesses don't bake and have never bought a celebration cake before.

ArcticSkewer · 07/07/2022 21:12

looks a bit crap. £20 if actually hand-made but I bet they defrosted the macarons from Lidl!

I'd pay about £35 for same size but better made.

LaurieFairyCake · 07/07/2022 21:14

10 people is only £3.50 a slice Confused

That's great for a lovely, well made cake that's not mass produced and made with good quality ingredients

Bordesleyhills · 07/07/2022 21:16

£80

LMB0716 · 07/07/2022 21:16

I charge £35 for this 7inch cake. I do think £35 is expensive for that size.

How much would you expect to pay for this cake?
Startuplife · 07/07/2022 21:23

Wow @LMB0716 I’m guessing you’re not in London. That would be £70+ here

BiFoldChampion · 07/07/2022 21:23

Macaroons are expensive made from almond flour

MyneighbourisTotoro · 07/07/2022 21:23

Around the £30 mark, ingredients aren’t cheap and you are paying for someone’s time, effort and for the resources they need to use to make the product.

MassiveSalad22 · 07/07/2022 21:24

I’ve been a pro cake decorator for 8 years. IMO someone turning out something of that standard shouldn’t be selling 😄 just looks rubbish, you can’t charge enough for that cake to make any money. The time it takes, the macarons - you have to be a better standard than that in order to charge properly for it. Embarrassing!

BiFoldChampion · 07/07/2022 21:24

Woah @LMB0716 !! That’s prob about £80 here

MassiveSalad22 · 07/07/2022 21:24

10 years, sorry!
