Am I naive to think Boris PM knows something we don’t know?

BiFoldChampion · 06/07/2022 15:10

Exactly that! The man is being shamed, people are resigning left right and centre (no pun intended). Am I thinking Boris out of possible concern for the country knows something we don’t know and wonders if he is actually the best of a bad bunch?

or is he so egotistical, so consumed by his own worth that he actually hasn’t got a clue!

I’m trying to work out why he’s clinging on for dear life!

Because he can and, as is being discussed elsewhere here, the rush to change the law to force him into another VONC will have long reaching consequences.

A group of unelected people with untrammeled power to remove a PM?

I bet Sturgeon would leap upon the chance to finagle it into a referendum, until she gets the right answer.

And many other things that would change the nature of politics in the UK/GB

Couple of points: it's not a 'law' they're changing, it's an internal rule for the conservative party. It's been changed a few times before too, usually extending the period allowed rather than shortening it. There never used to be a limit, you could submit any number of VNC's as long as you had enough letters.

Also, the 1922 committee is made up of MP's, who are all elected.

Finally, the 1922 can't remove him, they can only make it possible for conservative MP's (also, all elected) to submit letters of no confidence within a year of the last time they had a vote. Then, all the conservative MP's have to have a vote (again, all elected).

Our PM governs by the consent of the people, the feeling is he no longer enjoys that consent.

Right, so Boris Johnson wants to borrow borrow and Sunak wants austerity and tax cuts ? Hence his ' hard choices' line ( of something similar ? )
I thought BJ wanted tax cuts though ?
What will the new chancellor want ?

Who knows? The next chancellor is unlikely to be a Tory.

ApplesandBunions · 06/07/2022 16:38

I think he's just deluding himself.

VickyEadieofThigh · 06/07/2022 16:40

tightrope88 · 06/07/2022 15:13

It's your second point - he's a sociopathic narcissist, probably believing that all these resignations are against him as the victim, and will try to cling on for as long as possible. He's a smart, very dangerous man.

Correct.

itsgettingweird · 06/07/2022 16:40

Because he's been sacked for lying numerous time before - and therefore this is just part of life for him? 🤷‍♀️

the80sweregreat · 06/07/2022 16:40

Boris Johnson is so rattled
Getting redder and redder.
I like his little heart badge though.
It's 33 now , they are obviously watching this

Twillow · 06/07/2022 16:40

Definitely the second point. I'm watching the liaison committee hearing live, he's floundering all over the place and the people grilling him are really showing their contempt for him.

DogInATent · 06/07/2022 16:41

Chris Bryant hitting home in committee, shame the BBC cut away when the very pertinent opening question was asked. I hope we get it in full later.

Blossomtoes · 06/07/2022 16:41

This is turning out to be one of the best days of my life!

the80sweregreat · 06/07/2022 16:42

Op, going by this performance today , I don't think that our current PM knows anything much to be honest.
It's just painful to watch it all unravel.

HelloThereObiWan · 06/07/2022 16:43

Eh? They are not changing the law, they are changing the internal processes regarding how the Conservative party elects its leader. There isn't even an equivalent rule / committee in the Labour party, they have a different system for votes of no confidence for their leader. I wonder if you're getting confused with votes of no confidence in the government?

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 06/07/2022 16:44

Lol.

Apparently his shiny new Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi is now one of the cabinet ministers telling him to go.

the80sweregreat · 06/07/2022 16:44

Someone just asked him a maths question now.
Whoever this woman is in blue looks seriously fed up

PurpleDaisies · 06/07/2022 16:44

This is brutal

Fink · 06/07/2022 16:44

It bemuses me that so many people are resigning now in 'shock' at his behaviour and think we won't see through them. They knew full well what he was like when he was elected as party leader. I'm no fan of the man, but, to quote Shakespeare 'though I cannot be said to be a flattering honest man, it must not be denied but I am a plain-dealing villain'. He was a lying, cheating, self-serving scumbag when they elected him, and he's a lying, cheating, self-serving scumbag now. How can they keep a straight face with their pious resignation letters and speeches as though they thought he was a decent, honest man for so long but now, finally, they realise they have been deceived?!

the80sweregreat · 06/07/2022 16:45

I appointed a new chancellor yesterday.
He now wants me gone ! You couldn't make it up could you ? Really ?
If this is true it's astonishing.

DashboardConfessional · 06/07/2022 16:45

Haven't you ever read his school report?

*"[He] really has adopted a disgracefully cavalier attitude to his classical studies. [He] sometimes seems affronted when criticised for what amounts to a gross failure of responsibility (and surprised at the same time that he was not appointed Captain of the school for the next half).

"I think he honestly believes that it is churlish of us not to regard him as an exception, one who should be free of the network of obligation that binds everyone else."*

That was 1982. Nothing has changed.

Good. It’s been a long time coming.

I guess I’m thinking yes - something national security related. I can’t be sure.

it adds up on the sociopath/narc front. My grandfather was a similar man.

Apparently he knows how to fool some of the people all of the time, and you're one of them if you really think "something national security related".
I mean FGS. He just clings to power. The End.

the80sweregreat · 06/07/2022 16:48

That lady in blue was brilliant.
I think that BJ will be counting it in hours now till he has to remove that wallpaper !
Anyone got a steamer handy ..

Hrpuffnstuff1 · 06/07/2022 16:49

I'm in agreement with Richard Murphy on matters of fiscal policy, the government must step in and steady the ship. The Bank of England is acting in a manner that will stoke the Inflation fires rather than holding steady during this torrid time post covid.
Raising interest rates will do nothing to stop the external causes of the rises in cost and price.

Although I don't agree with Murphy's incessant focus on the doomsday scenario.

motogirl · 06/07/2022 16:50

He's trying to hold out because Carrie wants him to

He's trying to hold out because Carrie wants him to

I doubt it. He's a power hungry psychopath who's behaved like this his whole life.

mobile.twitter.com/ByDonkeys/status/1534059039994298368

Quite misogynistic to make a woman responsible for his behaviour

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 06/07/2022 16:55

Carrie's probably busy taking the £100K wallpaper off the walls and into a suitcase.

WeAreBob · 06/07/2022 16:56

motogirl · 06/07/2022 16:50

He's trying to hold out because Carrie wants him to

Please explain, in detail, why it is a woman's fault?
This is a man who has behaved like this his entire life. Even when he has been forced out of jobs, he has maintained that his actions were totally fine. But this is a woman's fault?
