Sorry if AIBU is not the most appropriate place to post this thread in.

Would you say Jersey is a well known holiday destination? Have you heard of it before?

OP posts:

Yes, I'm Irish. Jersey, an island off the South coast of England isn't it?

wellyelliebee · 04/07/2022 23:06

When I read the initial message my internal dialogue went "I bet this is just pages and pages of people confirming that yes they have heard of Jersey, and the OP never returning, maybe with a side conversation about bergerac"

JocelynBurnell · 04/07/2022 23:07

The Jersey Child Abuse Scandal was headline news 10-15 years ago.

Anyone who slept through Geography class would hardly have missed these headline stories.

NEVERwilnever · 04/07/2022 23:07

Yes, why do you ask?

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 04/07/2022 23:07

soootiredddd · 04/07/2022 22:59

Yes I have but I reckon a significant minority of people my age (early 30s) won’t have heard of it. Benidorm is a more common holiday destination than Jersey now.

Now? What do you mean by now, when in living memory has Benidorm not been a more popular holiday destination?!

Quite off the South Coast of England.

Yodaisawally · 04/07/2022 23:08

Well yes of course, tax idyll, jersey new potatoes, jersey milk, fab for holidays, great weather. How could you not have heard of it?

Have you heard of Guernsey, or Sark op?

Jackiebrambles · 04/07/2022 23:09

We've all got the Bergerac theme tune in our heads now yes?

QueSyrahSyrah · 04/07/2022 23:10

I saw that too @Dixiechickonhols, but they're not famed for their intelligence in there so I'd hope the average 20-something might have a bit more of a grasp of basic British geography (and history) Confused

Jackiebrambles · 04/07/2022 23:09

We've all got the Bergerac theme tune in our heads now yes?

It was my very first thought!

DrFoxtrot · 04/07/2022 23:10

Heart eyes for Bergerac Grin

Yes, heard of Jersey! Even 18 year old DD has. But 15 year old DS has not.

cakeorwine · 04/07/2022 23:10

But which is further South?

Guernsey or Jersey?

And which is nearer France?

Guernsey or Jersey?

DifficultBloodyWoman · 04/07/2022 23:11

Scissor · 04/07/2022 22:43

Dead famous, before Bergerac moved to Midsomer

🤣

StaunchMomma · 04/07/2022 23:11

Are you British, OP? Cus, well, Jersey is a very well known British Island!!

It even has it's own Real Housewives series!!

Oceanus · 04/07/2022 23:11

Jersey, UK, is were the rich stash their cash (legally) but I think the OP's being cheeky... 🙃

nocoolnamesleft · 04/07/2022 23:11

Oh, and an amazing jewelry shop near the hospital: Aurum. Real noses to the sweetshop window stuff.

Yerroblemom1923 · 04/07/2022 23:11

Yes, lovely place. Visit friends there a lot. Great beaches and weather and near France.

Autienotnaughtie · 04/07/2022 23:14

Not heard of box junctions but I have heard of Jersey.

Florenz · 04/07/2022 23:14

Is this someone on Love Island hadn't heard of Jersey?

Yerroblemom1923 · 04/07/2022 23:16

Have you heard of the Scilly Isles, OP?

willstarttomorrow · 04/07/2022 23:16

Yes it one of the Channel islands, a crown dependency (not a part of the UK). Occupied during world war 2 and full of tax exiles. The local accent- where it has survived- is quite distinct. As a holiday destination I would not really bother (went out with someone from one for several years). Expensive and that weird small island vibe. Just go to France.

Do people only know about places in their own country (you know what I mean) if they're holiday destinations?

ChagSameachDoreen · 04/07/2022 23:17

Yea because I'm not an imbecile.

Sideorderofchips · 04/07/2022 23:18

Jersey is more southern

The guy from love Island is from Guernsey

(jersey person)

Also the channel islands were occupied by the Germans in ww2

Kite22 · 04/07/2022 23:18

Well virtually everyone in the UK will have heard of Jersey.

I'm guessing many Americans would be able to work out there is a place called Jersey somewhere in Europe, and there is a 'New Jersey' in the US.
However, if you are from somewhere else in the world, and aren't particularly interested in maps or places, then I guess it is a relatively small place so there is no reason why folk would.

Why do you ask?
